I first started playing PnP RPGs many moons ago. That was soon followed by the purchase of a computer and a computer gaming obsession. I believe that how you start gaming has a huge influence in the type of game features that appeal to you. So I figured I would throw a very basic poll out to see if my theory is correct. A more varied poll may follow.

D&D Red Box in '84 is where I started, and while I am fairly flexible with regards to the pace of games, I do prefer slower progress games. I don't care if it takes 6+ months (or longer) to reach the level cap as long as I am having fun along the way. Games that have you reaching the cap in a few days just don't hold my interest for very long.
I first played video games Tetris, Asteroid, Tempest, Minesweeper, Carmen San Diego, Kings Quest V, Battlezone and some Targ/Counterstrike clone on my parents computer. The first big game I played was X-wing vs Tie Fighter on the computer. The first Console Game I owned was Spyro the Dragon. I never played PNP games until about 4 years ago, way after getting into video games.
I like both playstyles, but in MMOs I prefer moderate.

Well my parents bought us an original NES for xmas (mario+duck hunt box), I wasn't even 1 year old yet, and from what they tell me I was hooked to the controller right then and there lol.
I preffer twitch/skill based games, where the outcome depends more on what the player actually does and is not totally based on the quality of the gear they are wearing.
so, either tab targetting or twitch?
I prefer turn based combat in crpg's. Unfortunately the only turn based MMO I know of is Atlantica Online and I really dont care for it.
I love strategy elements combined with roleplay and none of the current generation CRPG's really offer this. Some of my favorite games were Baulders Gate, Icewind Dale, Planescape: torment.
I got an Atari 2600 when I was 6 from a rich uncle and never looked back. I got my fist computer (commodore 64) maybe a year later and then a 286 not too long after. It is hard for me to remember my very first games (obviously asteroids and the like), but many at least on the computer where RPG's. I really got into RPGs when I played Kings Quest, spent many hours in that game. Then Space Quest, the Police Quest series, and even Leisure Suit Larry....I really loved Sierra On-Line Games . Of course I had an NES and ruined two cartridges of Zelda from overuse.
Personally I prefer RPG's through and through, but many of my favorite games have been twitch combat too. Like someone already said, I really loved X-Wing and Tie Fighter and of course Wing Commander too. Bah...there are too many great games I like slower RPG combat, that lets me think and plan my next move.
Received this for my birthday in 1975 and the rest is history. Not really into twitch based games so much anymore. Never enjoyed modern warfare games. Prefer WW2 era shooters. Like a good story with some adventuring possibilities. Used both PC and consoles for a long time but now i am exclusively PC.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Trek:_25th_Anniversary_(computer_game) this was the first game I ever played because I wasn't aloud to have video games that hooked up to the tv, PC and Gameboy were ok. It was a DOS game that my Dad bought when I was like 8. He came home one afternoon and found I was further in the game then he was and he didn't realize I was even playing. So I showed him how to play it, and later beat it, from then on I was hooked on PC games.
The first game I played was Super Mario Bros,/Duckhunt.
So my history includes platformers, fighters, racers and adventure games like Zelda. I never liked CRPGs because the concept of standing there taking turns seemed silly to me and the fact that my character hits, misses, dodges and blocks on their own made the game less fun, and really I am still not a big fan of RPG combat. My favorite genre always was, and still is, adventure games, not the point and click kind but the action adventure type, like Shenmue. I got into roleplaying in my early teens when I played forum based RPGs and by E-mail RPGs for things like DBZ and Gundam, they are like PnP games minus the the rolls and stats and DM but with a focus on collective story telling.
I prefer twitch combat but also like my games more methodical with lots of exploration, puzzles, hidden things and story, you know like you get in the adventure game genre. I also like roleplaying and making and customizing my character. So I guess I was looking for an action adventure game where I can make a character and roleplay with other people, MMORPGs really are not the same thing but are like the cousin to adventure games since both genres have a lot in common, so thats why I play.
All men think they're fascinating. In my case, it's justified
The first video game system I ever had was the Telematch 4 (here's a similar German machine made by the same company), but I started playing PnP RPGs in 1974 with Chainmail with the xeroxed rules, switching to first edition D&D when it was released later that year. I played MUDs, etc for many, many years, finally jumping on the MMO bandwagon with UO.
MMOs are not a substitute for, or evolution of, PnP games. They were never intended to be and they certainly don't function as such. You simply cannot RP the same way in an MMO, or any online game, as you do in a PnP game. Those who think you can really have no clue what a good PnP game is like.
I really have no interest in twitch-based games. If I want that, I'll play a FPS. I also have no interest in turn-based games, those bore me intensely. I just want a fun game with a certain amount of progression that I can jump into and accomplish something in the little free time I have. That's all MMOs are for me.
Played: UO, EQ, WoW, DDO, SWG, AO, CoH, EvE, TR, AoC, GW, GA, Aion, Allods, lots more

I first played some DnD one of those colored boxes (red, green or black); some early amiga games most likely ports of the spectrum et al. Some of the great games were Dungeon Master & Elite, bubble bobble, Druid, Barbarian, Populous, Speedball 2 etc. Perhaps none of these were as great fun as PnP but Populous was the most rewarding so I picked option 1.
That said I think combat in mmorpg's clicking and immobile eg turn-based is really boring and prefer the greater action coming into recent mmorpg's. From my PnP games I always imagined mmo worlds to be similar ie nasty, brutish places where death/loss is always around the corner but where crazy plans for riches/loot are always possible. MMOs don't achieve that... even Dungeon Master and Elite seem more immersive than a lot of current mmos.

Started with PnP playing classic D&D and GURPS with my family.
First PC game I can't remember. Gravitated towards games like Doom and the first Warcraft and I remember playing the hell out of Quake 2 and WC 2 on the gamespy multiplayer system back before multiplayer in those games was a thing, which lead into a long term joy of competitive gameplay. Picked up Rainbow Six series and continued to play new shooters mostly, though I did also lay RPGs like Baulder's Gate and Neverwinter Nights a lot due to much deeper story and personalization.
Think the earliest console game I owned and played the hell out of was Wurm for the original NES. Favorite console games is split between Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana. I also liked Metal Marines. Moved on into loving Panzer Dragoon, Wipeout, Legend of Mana, and Kileak. Mostly these cemented by idea of gameplay options and preference in action.
More recent titles that hooked me woulf be the console series for Kingdom Under Fire, Mount&Blade, and Planetside.
Not a very specifically competitive gamer, but I gravitate towards PvP type games out of familiarity and challenge. That's Mostly from the abundantly obvious blending of strategy games with real time games. As a result it's pretty much always been a 'seek the holy grail' problem for me as far as joining the two into a large scale real time strategy game essentially with individuals as the units.
I also have this strong desire to know how things work, and that carried over into gaming as muchas anything else. Every game I play I know what engine they use and spend time reading up and learning about the quirks of their code and the system (though I don't actually like programming...).
I honestly have no clue where my desire to do RP in games comes from. I always love it when there's good lore for a game and having characters that really fit with the lore. Gives me a much stronger sense of purpose to what is going on. Feels like it's more or less an intrinsic element og gameplay.
Probably why I remember how the loading screens in Quake 2 actually had the occasional note on the psychological condition of Bitterman as the story progressed. That alone made me feel the game had a bit more to it than the surfac run and gun mentality most people were wrapped up in.
That or I'm a nut and do silly things like focus on the fluff...

Atari- games like Adventure (1st fantasy game i played, and my favorite on Atari), Space Invaders, Jungle Pit, demons to diamonds, that game where you control the sub that saves the divers from the sharks, the other space invader type game, where you stopped alien ships from beaming up civilians, and you heard a splat if you did not pick them up in time...
only played NES at friends houses, but enjoyed the Megaman games. but i played anything really. Castlevania games were my favorites.
SNES- anything i could get my hands on really. but loved the Street Fighter/Mortal Kombat games a lot. Killer Instinct too. enjoyed a lot of Rpg's. and single most favorite Snes has to be Chrono Trigger.
PS- Any Tenchu game, and Twisted Metal 2. WC2. The first Siphon Filter really excited me, and Soul Reaver 'Legacy of Kain' is my favorite from that system.
PS2- any GTA, Dynasty Warriors (yeah yeah its easy, but on the hardest setting, with a fresh character is another story). the first Samuri Warriors, countiniuing titles i mentioned from PS. most amazing game on the system (and nearly all around) is without a doubt Shadow of the Colossus.
PC- WC3. played some other rts, enjoyed Age of Mythologies a lot. got hooked into WoW from the WC series, and later tried other mmos. mainly ones that released after WoW. never really disliked any, but due to sub-fees and the time-sink nature of the games, i have to a bit more picky with them. so i picked EQ2 as my 'other' MMO (i love the housing). i currently only have a sub to Rift and look forward to see how the game grows, for better or worse.
TES4-Oblivion(along with a slew of player made mods) has to be my favorite PC game. i recently had to wipe my memory, so i lost all 10 of my characters. i don't really mind, since i still love playing it, and it's an excuse to make newer, better, characters. the wipe happened two days before my Rift headstart, so to be honest, TES4 is taking away a lot of time, that i would otherwise be playing Rift.
PS3- i don't own one, but my room mate does. only game i've really played is Demon Souls, and i take pride in saying that i beat that game
I started gaming with Asheron's Call and Everquest Waaaaaaaaaaaay back in the day. Ahhh the good ol' days
First game: Pong
First console: Sega Mega Drive
PnP: DSA (german) since '94
TBH, I like most games in their own way, except sports games, I never got the idea of a sports game, tb even more h, I never got the idea of real sport, so, you know, the basement geek I am, gaming and sports just don't, well, fit. You're either a gamer, or someone who can handle a real ball in the real world. I couldn't catch a softball if it was dropped into my hands...
Well anyways, I still like twitch based games if they're done well, like the Halo or CoD series although I'm getting increasingly worse with age.
But I've spent days and weeks in games like Battle Isle or Sim City back in the days; Not because of their mechanic, but because they were fun. Back when I was a kid I used to play every title I could get my hands on, from the classic point and click adventure to NASCAR racing. When recounting them I easily break the 50 mark, and that's just games I have fond memories of from the 90s, shadow of the beast, thunder jaws, r-type, the first metroids, castlevania, star trek on the gameboy, street fighter, space invaders, zelda, mystic quest, us navy fighters, apache longbow, sam and max, doom, quake, wolfenstein, exhume, the sims, fallout, one must fall, eye of the beholder, dune, warcraft, ... jesus christ, brainstorming this atm I'm pretty sure I'd break the 200 title mark just by thinking hard... so yea well, I played a lot of games...
Back to MMOs though, they are just another type of game, and I don't think it has to be genuinely tab-based or twitch based or round-based to appeal to me. It has to deliver a certain feeling, a mood I like when joining the game: WAR did that for me, or LotRO, both titles had a very unique feel for me and combat mechanics didn't play a major role in creating it. I think I'd even play a game if it had no combat at all, as long as it's evocing an original, in-its-own-right-authentic atmosphere...

Hmmm...I would say the game that got me really hooked on computer gaming was King's Quest in 1986 on a PC Jr! LOL. Mode 40 screen. I much prefer the online games of today with sandbox being my favorite type. If it's fun, I'll play whatever I can find. I rotate between WoW, UO, EQII Extended, GW, and Rift. Waiting for SW:ToR to arrive.
The developers of EQ would like to talk to you about that.
Hehe, awesome! Haven't seen one of those in a very long time. Was my first console too.
Warhammer fanatic since '85.
If they thought it was even a remote substitute, they failed miserably. It was nothing of the sort, it was, at best, a pale imitation of actual roleplaying done in a PnP game.

My first MMORPG was probably Mu Online. Back then, it takes months/years to reach lvl cap.

i have to say mine started with space invaders on the atari. i still remember kickin my dads ass and him throwing the joystick across the room, and breaking it lmao.

I remember going over a friend's house and playing Pong. Then my parents bought the atari 2600 for my brother's birthday. The many hours of playing Yars Revenge, Adventure, Combat, Asteroids, Qbert, I could go on and on lol.
I mainly was a console gamer (the Dreamcast was my favorite) but then I discovered the magic of online gaming on my Dreamcast with Phantasy Star Online. From there I played a few PC games like Leisure Suit Larry, Space Quest etc., but went to Ragnarok Online Alpha/beta (never subscribed to that game) and then DAoC, SWG pre cu..then every other MMO in existance.
I have finally gone back to my console routes and been mainly playing on my PS3 until a good MMO comes along again.
I started playing games like Quake, Hexen, Age of Empires, Neverwinter Nights Starcraft, Diablo, Dungeon Siege and Starwars: Galactic Battlegrounds. I guess I was around 20-22 when I really started to get into gaming.
D&D in the early 80s. First MMO I played was The Realm in 97 but EQ in 99 had the biggest effect on my gaming lifestyle
