So, guys, which type of combat do you prefer and why?
And besides your opinions, I also wish to learn the major differences between these two types of combat?
Like, the pro's and con's of both.
And the pro's and con's of melee and ranged combat when stealthing? (Think of it like metal gear solid vs Tenchu )
Oh, and while we're at it, I would also like to learn a bit more about video games.
Like in the combat role, what kinds of different playstyles are there? I always thought of it as frontal combat and stealth. Are there more kinds of playstyles?

I've always been more of a melee kinda guy. I just prefer the up in your face rolls. Even though in WoW my main was a hunter for a long time, i really did enjoy kiting and such but I prefer closing that gap between people and just plowing their face in
Both are interesting.
I am still waiting for a musketeer styled MMO where you first fire your pistol (one shot) and then draw your rapier and go into close combat.
The way blackpowder weapons are handled in MMOs are just silly.
I like the IDEA of ranged combat, but I'm not actually very good at it in FPSs.
So I use ranged classes in MMOs a lot, but anything that involves actual aim, I tend to use a lot of melee... you can spot me in any aim-based game because I'm the guy beating somebody to death with the butt of my rifle.
Pretty much the same for me.
Though playing a VG cleric now and liking the melee system they use there very much.
PS. Try shotguns and flamethrowers in aim-based games. You always hit something and it's much more fun . Heavy spray-and-pray type of machineguns also do the trick at times.

Rocket launchers and grenades also work for me! I'm a lot better at aiming at somebody's feet, than I am at shooting them in the head. Not sure why. Shotguns are usually my best friend though, yup.
I guess I'm a short range specialist (Except for rocket launchers and grenades). Most shotguns in games are crap at even medium range. Slugs don't seem to exist in video game land.

I'm usually horrible at predicting projectile arcs so rockets and grenades that have any flight time at all usually miss horribly with me.
I am however great at remembering maps in minute detail. So I sneak around in all the hidy places with either a shotgun or flamethrower and wait for someone to run by. Then get behind them and from short-range shoot them in the back.
Not sure how realistic it is to sneak up on people with a flamethrower, but whatever works .

The most fun I ever had on a character was on an enhanced shaman in vanilla WoW. Meelee/caster glass cannon. Worth getting killed 5 times just to see a massive windfury proc on the 6th.

You've got hit and run (guerilla tactics) which is where you attack by running in then running out without getting hit, you've got mighty glacier which is where you take the hits and deal out damage too, you've got stealth, you've got kiting, you've got setting up a defensive position etc etc.
You've also got various other playstyles around that. AS an example, look at elemental shaman in WoW. They're basically giant turrets. They have zero mobility, but do plenty of damage if they get to sit still.
Personally? I'm a melee "cleavin' skulls" kind of guy. Thematically, I like a two-handed hammer / axe. It's just nice to scare the shit out of clothies etc.
However, I really enjoy "jack of all trades" playstyles. Heavily device based and capable of great utility, throwing traps down, setting up defensive positions, bombing enemies etc.

Wow, it's like déjà vu all over again.
Well if its playstyles ill list a few o.o People may describe or name them differently but those are some playstyles I enjoy
Tactical Melee - Like Onimusha where block and counters are important
Stealthy melee - Like Tenchu or like the rogue in that DnD game in the ps2.. I forgot the name of the game but basically the rogue character turns invisible if you stay in the shadows for a while and so you have to make use of the shadows well to be able to kill fast and not get killed too quickly
Turtling - Ok the last MMO I played with this was Sword 2 and theres these 3 characters which can make immovable constructs. Theres one that makes cannons and heal/protective wars and another which makes spinning blades. You can also make fences with them that aggroes enemies! Really fun! I guess trapsetting and luring would fall into this playstyle.
Guerilla/kite - I love this! It can be used to a small degree in stealthy melee but I loved kiting in WoW. I remember kiting that raid boss south of the swamp place all the way to stormwind and the gm had to remove it...LOL...I usually mix this a lil with turtling, luring them to bad spots or to traps....or just generally distracting them while someone else kills. Works in FPS/TPS games in luring noobs to ambush points, places where they are at a complete disadvantage
Stealth ranged - treat this as teh same as stealthy melee except without the kewl moves like in tenchu...
Spotter Ranged - Or a sniper...Basically got this from APB. Shoot someone with the nhr 970? I forgot that but its the sniper rifle that will take people to reallly low hp with 1 shot and the 2nd shot kills them. Instead of trying to kill people, I hit someone say the name out, watch someone else 1 shot him and repeat with the rest.
Hack n Slash - Not my favorite really...I guess games like Dynasty Warriors and DMC fall here. I loved Royal Guard and trickster in dmc3 though lol
