So I decided to give LOTRO a go, downloading it now.
Anyone got any tips on which servers are the best for Aussie/NZ player timezones?
And regarding classes, which classes are most fun to play in raids/dungeons, and which classes is there a shortage of?
Comments
You made a good choice my friend, well im American so i couldnt reccomend a server that would be Aussie and Newzeland timezones. As for classes each class is well balanced. I would go with Minstrel , buglar and champion for raids,Hunters are too many dimes a dozen. I myself have 4 toons my first run was with a champion. Im having a easier time with Guardian and Ministrel in alot of the missions and quest i did with the champ. I dont see alot of burgulars in the game, that cuz its a challenging but awesome job if you know what you are doing. I hope you really like this game. Turbine is a good company i havent had any real complaints about the game.

Elendimir (sp?) is the unofficial Oceanic server if you are playing on the Turbine/NA version
And like almost every other game, healers (aka minstrels and especially Rune-Keepers, though you need to buy the latter) are what is most needed, along with a tank.
R.I.P. City of Heroes and my 17 characters there
In my experience Minstrels and Guards have always been the most in-demand classes at high levels.
While both can solo well, I know a lot of people that abandon the Guard due to its lower dps and limited versatility. Its a slow grind from 50 to 65. I resorted to skirmishes and lots of exp perks to quicken the pace.
The minstrel is a bit squishy but In war-chant can deliver some solid dps making for shorter fights and faster deed completion.
I would have to say that personally I enjoyed the greater flexibility of the Minstrel. I levelled my guard strictly to benefit my kinship and there were times I felt it was almost too big a sacrifice. On the positive side, Guards are great as shard hunters and can go toe to toe with just about any elite that is close to their level given the right configuration of gear, traits etc.
Just some personal perspective, hope it helps

I've played most of the classes and the one i've always overlooked was the Warden until a couple of weeks ago. I am very glad I did as it is such a great class and has now become my favourite and is a lot of fun to play. Well worth having a go:)
Thanks for the advice fellas.
I've rolled a minstrel on Eledirimililililili (sp?). The game looks a little outdated, but so far the story has been fun.
Just out of curiosity with the item shop, is it possible to level to 65 just with quests?
Or do they quickly run dry and the rest of the way is monster grinding?
Really the only way to level IS doing the quests. You get tons more XP turning in quests then just grinding monsters. You'll be able to play well into your 30s for free so try it out and have fun.
Quite true and thats what makes this game so fun. I really find grinding really boring, having played ff11 for years. If your looking to be a free player i would suggest trying to complete deeds to get turbine points. You can pile up alot of these points and buy areas of the game. But my suggestion is to go VIP its well worth it.

outdated?
really?
other than the horrible art design for some of the avatars and gear, make sure you have everythign at the highest, you might have to download the high rez texture pack (not sure if that's automatic now or not) and putting the game on DX 10.
The game does not look outdated.

Totally agree. LotRO has to be one of the best looking MMO's out there and runs so smoothly.
I still love rolling into Rivendale. It is exactly as I had pictured it in my minds eye when reading the books.
For years I played MMO's with a fairly middle of the road computer. Just this year I managed to afford a gaming rig that can handle the highest graphic settings. I never realized just how much I was missing visually. It has been almost like playing a brand new game that is much more engrossing.
If you get out to the Lone Lands there is a quest series given by Refr Quicksilver that takes you into the Dourhand ruins there and ends with a visit to Mithrenost to kill the overseer. If you have any doubts as to the quality of the graphics in LOTRO, check out the sky when you climb the stairs to the overseer. There are many other examples but this is one of my favorite which offers a truly engrossing atmosphere that conveys a great sense of dread and purpose.
Good journeys

I made that statement from very early on in the game. The first few levels in Archet, as well as the poor character customization graphics make the game look a bit outdated.
However, after I got into the Shire and saw some of the lakes and scenery, I have to agree with you guys about the graphics being well above the normal MMO.
Ive been playing this game on the lowest for months and decided to raise the graphics to high and was amazed. The character detail and the backgrounds were amazing. I would love to play this game on a high end laptop.

I really want to play this game on Ultra High, I bet it's beautiful.
You can bet it is. Though that wasn't what improved the game for me the most, fixing this issue did. Wasn't the gfx change that helped that though, but installing the game onto a SSD. Can now run the game with everything maxed and no hitching whatsoever, so if in doubt ... never seen any game improve that much from getting an SSD, infact its the only game in my game collection i installed on the new SSD.
well I agree the customization is horrible.
*fun fact* in closed beta a player could actually change their nose regardless of the face.
I thought there was going to be more of that. Instead they took that out.

The character models have always sucked, since day 1. But the environmental graphics are actually outstanding.
I'm not sure why they refuse to update character models but will go as far as putting in DX11 updates.
Character design is what they need to update next. Hopefully it's what they're working towards.
anyone ever notice the night sky? The moon is exaclty the way the real moon looks. All the constelations are the same as real life also. I think I have played pretty much every major MMO and this is the most polished game out there. Lots of little touches liek the two I just mentioned make LoTRO stand out.
I miss DAoC
what is the current max level in LOTRO?
Currently 65. It is expected to raise to 70 towards the end of this year.
The current level cap is 65.
thank you!
Class wise I’d say if you are willing to purchase a Warden or Rune Keeper you should try them.
The Wardens gambit system was very strange to me at first, and I’d not seen anything like it in other games I’d played, but after getting used to it and remembering the more important gambits, I could play my Warden quite well. I think that Wardens are easily the most fun tanks in the game right now.
The Rune Keepers system is also strange at first, I’ve seen something like it in another game, but this one was a little more complex. But again, once you get the hang of it you’ll be having a blast with it! Really good healer and good solo damage.
I won’t ruin the systems for you, as its fun to be completely shocked at how complex they are at first, but its also nice when you start realising that you are actually getting the hang of them. This also makes the classes better.
They are very complex classes, but played correctly they are also very fun classes and very able to solo most content, plus what they can’t solo they can get groups for fast as Rune Keeper is a healer and Warden is a tank.
I don't mean to sound big headed... But I know Voldemort.
Recently returned myself, ive got 2x 65's already, but decided to roll up a new char, ended up with Champion and im having a blast!
Somehow I always end back up in LOTRO
Rune-Keeper is my favorite class right now.
