FFXI worth a try?

tjehctjehc Member UncommonPosts: 2

I know Final Fantasy 11 has been out for several year's now and is pretty much known as a classic in the MMO world but I have never given it a try as I have not bothered to purchase it and there seems to be no free trial. I was wondering if it still is popular today and has a strong playerbase to play with as from what I have heard it is a very social/group friendly kind of game. I've been a WoW player since vanilla and have played and tried various MMO's, but as a kid I grew up with the Final Fantasy game series and it is still my favourite game series to date I was wondering if a Final Fantasy fan like myself would still enjoy Final Fantasy 11 or has it's time come to an end? I Know Final Fantasy 14 was released only a couple of months ago and quite a few XI players have moved onto that but from what I've heard its bombed out so far, its confusing as hell and the gameplay just isnt enjoyable at the moment although they are apprently working on improving all that at this current time.

The Point of this thread is I want FFXI players feedback to tell me if this is worth buying and giving a go or it's time of fun and high population is over. It dosen't worry me about buying it as it's only $9.99 Digital Download with all the expansions and such, but with that I also dont want to waste my time and money on a game thats time is up and has already bombed out to the point where it is no longer playable or not even worth my gametime anymore.

I quit FFXI about 3 years ago after playing it straight through since NA launch.(ie. a long time)  Recently I've been thinking about going back simply to check out all the new stuff.  I have a friend who still plays and likes to keep me updating on what's been going on.  They've made things a lot better with it's new team, the old one went on to make that bomb you mentioned.

All in all, if you have the cash to buy a new game at release without waiting for reviews, I'd give FFXI a go.  A $10 download plus it's monthly fee is going to run you no more than $30? for a few months and it'll give you a lot of content to play through so long as you can remember it's a REALLY old game and won't play like newer MMOs.

Also, april is suppose to be free since they shut down the servers for a week or two because of the Japan nuclear sitiation.

We really need separate forums for every newly launched game. There can be the anti-<MMO> one and there can be the 'what general discussion should be' one. All the lamenting can happen together where each can find solace in like minded can't-move-on-ers leaving the rest of us to actually move forward and discuss meaningful and relevant topics.

From what I keep hearing it does sound like a great game and the fact that it's Final Fantasy just make's me want to buy it right now. Is the PvP aspect of it any decent? & Is there open world PvP to it as well?

I guess technically there's PvP as player can fight each other.  There's no open world PvP, FFXI is primarily a PvE game with the PvP option added on.

If you google "ffxi ballista" or "ffxi brenner" you'll get a better idea of what I'm talking about than I can explain, I never did take to the PvP in FFXI because the PvE is where it's at.

like mentioned by your first responder, I played FFXI from the NA release up until about 2-3 years ago.  I loved it, but for end-game content, it required that you have no life, and a terrible sleep schedule to get the best gear in the game.  For the longest time there was no PvP content.  It was impossible to make any currency worthwhile.  Some end-game fights took literally 4 hours.  When crafting, certain days and directions you faced directly determined whether or not your craft suceeded or not.  You could not level past 20 for the longest time without a full group.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^  That above is why I left the game ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>  Now what I liked about the game <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

It stuck to the traditional Final Fantasy feel.  At the release, the graphics were amazing.  Chocobo raising and other similar events were fun.  It was the first game that I remember that had a non-fail auction house.  Strategy was always a big part of the boss and NM fights.

Would I go back?  Probably not.  Is it worth trying?  Sure...  It's much cheaper, they are still updating, and it has an active community.  Just be ready for some choppy gameplay and graphics compared to today's standards.
