Looking for a game similar to FFXI

AlkavenAlkaven Member Posts: 25

Before I go anywhere with this, I want to make it clear that WoW is not an option, I refuse to even touch the game.  I already played the trial, the game is not for me.

Moving on... I'm looking for another MMORPG (preferrably recent or new-ish) that is similar to what FFXI was before they raised the level cap.  I've tried several different MMOs before, but most of them tend to obsolete content every 6 months, or are way too easy to advance through.

Some examples of things I enjoyed most about FFXI:

1. Advancement had nice slow yet comfortable pacing, with a reasonable penalty when dying (exp) and methods to reduce such penalty (raises, raise items, etc.,)

2. Classes were not confined into solid "roles" (archtypes or whatever), and each class had something unique that no other class had.  The 2-hours were genius.  In addition, you could level any class, and equip another class you've levelled to act as a "support class".

3. There was always something to do.  The in-game economy put a value on every item based entirely on it's rarity or usefulness in a craft or event (such as BCNMs).  Ongoing events gave you something to do (such as Conquest or Besieged). Quests that gave items you couldn't buy from any vendor and couldn't farm from any monster.

4. End-game content that took years to get everything from, forcing players to use rules or management systems to deal out loot.

5. Content that isn't obsoleted every 6-12 months with a new patch or expansion.

I can't go back to FFXI because a lot of the above has changed immensely with the level cap increase.  But surely there's something out there that appeals to this type of gamer.  I prefer something that takes a long time to do, even if I have to do it in 2-hour chunks each day over a week.  A lot of MMORPGs I've been told to try are just... the complete opposite.  I can literally game my way to max level in a few days.

Preferrably lots of grinding to reach max level.

The game has to be fairly new.  Preferrably within a year ago or something that is coming soon.  Any suggestions?

Yeah let me know too. I wish they would have just left it the way it was when the cap was 75, maybe an adjustment to drop rates for salvage would have been cool lol. For years they said they would never raise the cap but they were liars.

I only hated two things about the game:

The interface - Of all the things that needed an upgrade, the interface was the most brutal to play with.

Graphics - I don't know why, but I'm positive half of my graphics were rendered using my CPU for graphical processing.  No other game of the same graphics quality ran as sluggish.

I'd still put up with both those things if I could have my classic FFXI back.

Sorry op but no,i would know if such a game exists,i have played tons and i am always reading/surfing the net.

If you want my opinion, there is ONLY one game that is remotely worth looking at besides FFXI and that is Archeage. So wait it out if you can and see if AA pans out,it really is going to offer a lot of new things to MMORPG gaming. The only problem i see is if the game puts too much emphasis on PVP,but we will have to wait and see.I believe AA is also a Korean developer,i have always been critical of them, but this could be the game that removes the stereotyping of Korean game design.

The only real problem i see with the level cap is if you get caught up in end game "drama" and or the Abyssea lure. The ease of xp was to aleviate the hate SE created when they made sure their Abyssea  xpacs offered a "reason" to buy it and imo it was a shallow reason,a new armour set and easy xp.This is following in the footsteps of Wow,but just ignore it like i do.SE Could or SHOULD have done alot more with this xpac, they did not but the rest of the game is still great.

You should do like i do , enjoy the parts of the game that are fun, especially what the game does "BEST" ,grouping ,class design,PVE combat and content.

Enjoy FFXI while it lasts,it won't be around forever, there is going to be another great game there always is,my gut thinks it might be AA.

There just isn't a game like FFXI. I saw the thread when you first posted it and nothing I've experienced has been quite like FFXI.

But for anyone curious, the reason FFXI got classes right where almost no other major MMO has is they virtually ignored PVP. As soon as you ignore PVP, tanks can have tanking abilties, there can be tiers of strength in healers and utility classes that can't kill anything solo bring the greatest assets to the group in unmatched buffs.

I'm not saying modern games should ignore PVP and don't want to derail this thread into another on that topic.

Spec'ing properly is a gateway drug.
