Maybe some of you who have been following the game can help me. I'm getting close to buying it and checking it out, but one thing I am confused about is how/why people are capping in only a few days. Even if you take out the hardcore players, casual players seem to be capping in about a month.
Is this part of the development plan for the game? Are the devs planning to constantly expand content, and turn this into a game full of capped players? I was looking around for some kind of dev roadmap going forward but couldn't find anything.
To be honest, I am not going to pay $50-$60 for a game that may only last me for a month or two at best. I'm trying to figure out what Trion's strategy is here. I find it hard to believe they would throw the game out here with such a fast level cap, and not explain themselves.
Thanks!

most of the people who have capped so quickly are hardcore or ultracore gamers who devote 6+hours daily to gaming. Yes, they are also the ones who have the most time to comment negatively about games failing to meet their very high demands.
I play about 5-10 hours a week for the last month and have probably 3 characters at lvl 14-18 and one almost at 26. If you are only going to make one character and level you can get it done in about 3 weeks if you have a healthy life outside of mmo's. I don't know anyone in real life who only tries one class in an mmo.
I expect to play for 5 months more or so. I bought the 6 month sub today. Your mileage may vary, depending on how hard you plan to drive the game.
I am more than casual but less than hardcore and it took me 30 days to hit cap. There was a couple of bugs that allowed people to level super fast in the first weekend the game came out. There are many people in my guild that are still not 50 but nearly all will be in the next week or so.
This was the plan by the devs. when asked before Launch how long it would take to hit 50 the answer was "Who cares" it was not important to them cause the end game is the focus. They plan on an aggressive content schedule. They have already added a second raid mulitboss Raid (which will be live when players finsh the new world event). They have another raid that is nearly complete (in the next 60-90 days according to devs).
I almost quite the game while leveling cause it was too easy, the crafting, the instances, the quests all of it. But then i hit 50 and instances are now turned into expert versions of the old instance. That is a whole new ball game. They are challenging and rewarding. I am embarresed to say how many hours we spent stuck on a couple of bosses.
all that being said, if you don't like WoW's end game you will not like this one. It is the same gring instances gain plaques to turn in for better gear. Then Raid. So i say it is worth checking out but if you are bored with the genre don't bother
Thats what a lot of players want these days : a quick race to the cap, then repetitive gear raiding .

yup i agree. I prefer Lotro in that leveling takes a while and the instances are epic and challenging even at lvl 20 aor 40, not just at lvl cap. The problem with that game is the end game is crap, and they are way too slow in getting new content (mirkwood, then nothing new for over a year).
So in the long run the end game grind is more important to keeping people
There are times, especially during off-peak hours when not so many people are online, that invasions can be completely disruptive to your flow. You might just be trying to collect eggs from nests, when all of a sudden a thousand rifts open up and prevent you from finishing your quest. You can't close them because you're outnumbered and no one else is around, so your only option is to go do something else for a while. This extreme scenario has occurred once or twice, and only for about an hour. Eventually someone is going to close the rift and you can keep going, but if you're the kind of player who simply wants to power level to Rift's cap of 50, then be warned that rifts may be more of a nuisance than a boon.
I played lotro twice for about 8 months each time before I got bored. It is a very nice and polished game, but it is also very sterile and dry. I think Rift sounds really interesting with thtese dynamic events happening.
I'm rather tired of MMOs that have this dull, lifeless world. We need more games with dynamic events, which is one reason I can't wait for GW2.

Let me be frank. If by dynamic you mean the random number generator checks the zone population and spawns rifts "randomly" (actually a bit close to civilization nodes to be honest) then yes it's dynamic. If you mean dynamic by ever-changing and evolving then these are not the Rifts you are looking for. I'm not bashing the fact it is by a very narrow sense dynamic in that they do spawn somewhat randomly, but in fact there is more to it than that and the actual way you close the Rifts varies hardly any at all.
It needs a LOT of work to be worth paying a subscription for to be honest. But hell after WoW had dumbed this generation's MMO players down they'll accept any watered down bullshit of a MMO.
Thirty years of gaming experience...not sure if I should be proud of that

I think the lvl cap is right on par with WoW's tbh.. It took me around 2-3 weeks of "casual" play (around 4hrs a day) to hit lvl 40 in WoW.. Right now i've been playing Rift for about 2 and half weeks at about 4-6hrs a day (weekends prolly more as work has been slow) and am lvl 29.. But also with Rift i'am taking more time exploreing and doing war fronts, when in WoW i just ran instances for quick XP.. With Rift i find myself wanting to venture off the beaten path, tbh its got the most interesting and best looking game world.. Gloamwood is really beautiful, and it's cool to find diamond NPCs (world bosses) roaming around in some cave you wondered on thats ontop of some hill..
With that said, i see myself playing for atleast a few months.. It'll prolly be another month till i hit 50, or maybe even longer since lvling up is getting a lot slower.. Keep in mind i do a lot of Rifting+War fronts so maybe i'am not lvling up as quick as those that are just clicking through quests without reading them and running through the game world without taking time to smell the roses..
All i know is im having a blast.. money well spent for me.
Currently Playing:
Rift + Starcraft II + Gears Of War 3 Beta
i have been lvl 50 for a couple of weeks now. theres still enough stuff to do that i really dont see myself quitting within the next 2 months at the very least.

Thanks all. I ended up buying the game and rolling a cleric on Deepstrike. Starting area was pretty good. The game looks great on my system with Ultra+ settings. I've heard people say the graphcis are weak, and to that I say their computer must suck.

Well, right now until a real game like Guild Wars 2 comes along, some of us are just looking for something to play. We either go back to the same old choices, or play Rift for now. Hell, I never was a big WoW fan in the first place, but I need an MMO to play.

make sure you get into a decent guild by the time you hit 50. imo endgame content was built around organized grouping.

Leveling in few days to level cap is not normal dude.....
It took me around a month to reach cap....which is something very similar to what happens in any other game.
there are players that just rush to the max level....but u miss so much...i would never do that.
About end game...well...i not easy to get to do T2...you need to get well geared and that will take you a while
After that you will have Raid Rifts and Instance raids so you´ll have lots of content to play for months....
Besides that Trion seems to be delivering new content fast since we are already in World event 1 month after release.
Seems like i´ll be playing longer that i expected....
This is the most accurate thing I have ever read on this website about this game. Complete and utter truth.
You can solo for the most part to 50. After that, look to what this guy says.
The expert dungeons are no joke. Seriously...they're not.
Plenty of solid pick up groups for the experts (t1 at least). Ive been in more pick up groups and built one of the more robust friends lists in this game than I have in years! Reputation actually matters again (at least for now) . You get to know your great healers or awesome tanks, or the guy that knows every dungeon-kinda feels old school in that regard.
Join random groups and actually know people, bump into people in town and /wave to them as youve pug'd with them a few times. Very different than my experience in eq2 where basically the only people i knew were guildies and sort of the same with my long tenure in LOTRO.
There is a ton to do at 50! Expert dungeons are a real challenge, ive yet to see the raid content, i enjoy "invasions", daily quests for cash and faction, a fair bit of crafting for dailies, etc etc.
Those that i saw "rushed" to 50 still had 5-7 days played on their accounts-they just stuffed those 7 played days into 14 RL days-not sure how one does that but...And virtually EVERY guy i know that got to cap in a week/two weeks ignored crafting, ignored pvp, largely ignored rifts (unless they were grinding them for exps), ignored exploration and achievments.
Saw one of our guilds first level 50's ticking off the basic pvp/planarite/crafting achivements in guildspam the other night. Was kind of blown away that he hadnt done any of the basic content in this spheres.
I think there is a solid 7-12 days played of just questing, wandering, dungeon running to get to 50. Add in some exploration, Rifting, crafting etc and youve got a lot more. And there is a TON to do at 50! Its a whole new game once you ding 50
The leveling is at a decent pace imo. What the guy said about meeting people trough pugs is verry good advice. I hope Trion takes note of what WoW did that ruined the games community (worse than it already was) and not implement a cross server dungen finding tool. While the dungeon finder made it easy for players to get groups, it rewarded laziness and trollish behavior. I hope I get into a decent guild to run the harder dungeons by end game, but I am enjoying the pugs a lot for now.
RIP Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan and Paul Gray.
No, we players want endless content for free.
The devs want as much as possible for minimum work.
This is a compromize even if it is more to the devs liking than most players. Just like most other products of course.
The current system of having enough content to max up rather fast and then use repetetive dungeons means that you can make the game a lot smaller than a game like Everquest and Lineage 2 where you are out and leveling a long time. So you can make a game that looks good at a relatively low price.
Players do generally want instant gratification but not limited content you repeat over and over.
need? really?
sounds like a true addiction there. no hate though. i think i might be the same way.
now regarding the OP.
i started Rift with the headstart, and in almost three weeks i had a toon at lvl 44. i focused on questing and dungeons and dedicated my time to just one toon, which is unlike me, but i REALLY wanted to check out all of the zones. i didn't clear all the fog in a couple of the last zones (at lvl 44 i had 3 options for questing zones) and after i achieved my goal (silliness, i know) i decided to take a few steps back from the game. i knew that only a few more days (of hardcore playng in my perspective) and i would be 50.
other mmo's i played seemed about the same, when considering how many hours are played, and the lvl caps. in AoC i had a lvl 50 in a little over two weeks. 50 is not lvl cap in AoC, but you should still get the general idea of what i mean.
i capped a toon in CoV in under a month. i dont have a max lvl in EQ2 (too many alts), but the stroll to lvl 50 in that game is more or less the same pace. in WoW, i could have a lvl 50 in a week if i was subbed and played a lot (by my own terms). of course what is' hardcore playing' to me, would still be considered 'casual' to some of the people out there. granted i go days without playing an MMO, and when i am really into them, i'll play 8-12 hours a day if i can spare the time( more rare these days). so, go figure.
back to the point.
i know that lvl gain % varies per lvl. for instance, it will take longer for a player to get 89-90 in EQ2, compared to getting a toon 49-50 in Rift. but the actual exp gain % increases leading up to the '50' mark seems about average with other games. this is not said as a defense (to claim that this makes it ok), just an observation.
i'm staying subbed to Rift for when i want to play this kind of game. honestly, right now i'm not playing anything except Rift and some TES4 (with player made mods), and even then, the majority of my time has seen little gameing the past few weeks. but i don't blame this on Rift. it's fun, i enjoy my toon, and i am very curious to see how the game will develop over time.
sorry, but anyone who reaches lvl cap in a few days-1 week, then complains about it, has a serious complex, mental deficiency, or most likely, both.
Well if we are talking about how RIFT is today-I think its provided plenty of high end content. At first I though that re-doing the dungeons as experts at level 50 was lame. But I can assure you they feel quite "new" when you hit them. The content is much harder, the nameds require real strategy and planning. It feels like a new experience. I have yet to see the Raid dungeon nor have i popped a raid Rift-ive been 50 for about two weeks.
The long term future of course depends on how quick high level content is added. I am cautiously optimistic as a new raid zone has already been announced as a part of the new World Event. Also rumors of an epic level 50 quest started circulating a bit last night (I havent followed up on it).
So far so good with the pace of new stuff and the amount of stuff to do at 50-any all the way up through the levels.

I game about six hours per week, often less, thanks to work, family, reading and martial arts class. I do squeeze in the occasional late night marathons on the weekend when I'm not out on the town with wife and friends. What I meant by "need" is that the only games I play are MMOs, and I only play one at a time. There was a time before I had a life though, where I was a gaming addict, but my game of choice then was Tribes. Now I'm casual.
The reason I made this post was that lots of people were talking about how fast they got to level cap. Now I get the idea it's about the same pace as WoW, which is fine if have no choice. Welcome to our instant-gratification, low effort society.

1) You expect Guild Wars 2 to be totally different
2) You believe leveling up in GW2 will take longer than in WoW/Rift
If you dont want to pay 50 dollars for one month of "fun" then dont buy this game. If you played WoW, you already played rift. If you played warhammer, you already played Rift.
The best thing about this game is that it works, and by that i mean you dont crash a lot and there are very few bugs.
Kinda sad that the deciding factor for whether a game is good or not is how it works. Not whether its fun, or something new to play.
This is just a grind fest.
Its like that old commercial from the 80s about cocaine. I do coke, so i can work more, so i can make more money, so i can buy more coke, so i can work more so i can make more money, so i can buy more coke........
There is no point to the gear grind than to grind some more gear. If pve is your thing thats fine.
Imo there should be something that is actually just fun to do, whether you get a reward or not. You should be grinding that gear so you can advance to an activity like PvP, not to grind more gear.
Not only is gear grinding extremely boring for most people with above average intelligence, it ruins an important community building component of mmos, and that is a player economy which is run by crafters.
What is the point of crafting in a gear based game, when nothing you will ever make is going to be as good as the high end raid gear?
Expert dungeons are almost exactly the same as the regular difficulty dungeons, the only difference is the addition of a boss at the end.
Rifts get very repetative, as though they have different graphics, they all play exaclty the same.
Dont keep giving money to these companies that just rip off WoW like its the only game model in exsistance. I bought this game, because my friends talked me into it, and i wish i hadnt given them my money for more of the same crap. Gotta stop paying them, when they stop making money making clones, they will stop making them.
wow. this post is so full of wrong i dont know where to even start. i'll just say i disagree with everything completely and wait til everyone else rips this guy apart.
