the social parts is good. You need to be prepared to be patient though as many different language speaking people share the same server. The game has a built in Translator like thing for japenese. Player housing is instanced and you can do cool thing to and in your MogHouse. After lvl 10 or so grouping is a must and the grind kicks in. However its not so noticable if you find a good group and explore.

It's moreso of a grind than WoW. I think the no PVP thing really helps the socialness though. No competing between players, its all just fun.
i play on australian servers because racism is acceptable there
The social part is what you make of it. Yes, the lack of usual PvP probably does add to the friendliness, and as far as I can tell, Ballista is usually something of a friendly competition, not an all out hatred for your opponent since once the match ends, you can't contiually beat the crap out of them in normal gameplay.
Its a grind, yes- but I've found that as you level, if you make a point of doing a lot of leveling at once you often can find the same people you either enjoyed partying with (or not) over and over. Example: I partied with the same WHM and NIN 3 out of 6 days of leveling from 10-25 and had a great time.
Also, don't forget the Linkshell feature, which is kind of like your own group of friends in the game. Good ones are helpful and have good repuatations around your server. Bad ones, ones who steal pulls, repeatedly camp NMs 24/7, MPK people, or are just bad party members are often seen as trouble. Not to say you need to worry about that in the beginning- you'll find an LS (or they'll find you) that fits your personality, play schedule, etc. And if not, nothing stops you from forming your own LS and filling it with people you want to join you.

Well, in FFXI, grinding and levelling up requires the social aspect. In FFXI, you are not likely to get much past level 10 without a party. Thus, you *will* work with other players. And they will work with you.
Yes, you have player housing. Each player gets a "mog house", his own little room in the residential district. You can stash stuff there, you can furnish it to your liking (and get special bonuses with the insufferably cute name of "moghancements" depending on how you lay things out) and even grow plants in there.
Oh, but one thing, since you mentioned social aspects. Only you can enter your mog house. So if you want to show off your interior decorating or gardening skills, you have to settle for showing other people screenshots.
