Western MMO

Western as in "The Outlaw Josey Wales" or "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" style.  If you look at Rockstar's Western (Red Dead Redmeption) they released a couple of years aog, people loved it.  I was never able to play it since I'm striclty a PC person, but I've been tempted to make the plunge when I heard about that game.

Years ago I almost replied to an ad looking for a world builder for an online Western MMO.  Apparently it never took off though since that was 6 years ago and I haven't heard anything since.  I also used to play a Paper and Pencil RPG called Deadlands that was a hell of a lot of fun!

So this got me thinking - What would a "Wild" Western style MMO have in it?  Some things I can think of would be:

  • More social style gameplay - saloons, card games, brothels, etc.

  • Stealth thieving and hijacking skills

  • Quick draw/duel skills

  • Dirty fighting tactics/skills like kicking dirt, biting, spitting or general brawling

  • Sharpshooting with rifles

  • Horeback riding

  • Stage coach driving

  • Railroads

Damn... this list can go on and on!

Any more ideas?

I really liked "Red Dead Redemption". If an MMO could be like that, how great would that be?!

You could pick the time you wanted to start-say start in the East somewhere and work your way west as a mountain man/trapper. Gold seeker perhaps. Or any number of things. How you handle yourself and what you do ingame determines your destiny. There would be so many variables to your character! It would make a great sandbox game!

Frontier 1859 was going to have all that and more... http://frontier1859.com/

For some reason they cannot get funding for it and/or personel to make it.

I always wondered what had happened to Frontier 1859... I remember reading about it back in 04 or 05, and I remember that it was stalling back then. It's sad to see such a great idea languish in development hell...

I'm assuming that game is dead of unknown reasons?  Sure would like to know the story behind what happened to it!
