Minecraft buzz....

IsturiIsturi Member Posts: 1,509

All of the suden I came across this odd looking game called minecraft. It seems it has been around for awhile still in beta form. Is it a MMO? Mutiplayer? or what?  It seems to be getting more popular by the day.

If anyone has played this game please give me a honest review of this game So I know what I am getting into before I get into it.

Thanks.

It's still in beta. There are multiplayer servers but it's not an MMO. It's a sandpark game which no goal or win condition (at the moment. I believe he plans to implement a game mode you can win for the final version). There are lots of materials to collect and combine to make many different objects and buildings. It has been compared many time to virtual Lego. On survival mode you also have to deal with monsters that come out at night and kamikaze hedges that explode all the shit you spent ages building. However the possibilities of what you can build are endless if you have the time, imagination and patience.

If you can get past the text graphics and the horrendus interface perhaps, but it's a completely different game and he asked about Minecraft not DF. Incidentally some dude is making a game for XBLA that's called FortressCraft and is supposed to be a combination of the two games.

It's a fun little diversion, especially if you have friends that you want to play with and build things together. For me it was well worth the price. Got a good month or two of fun gamingout of it.

    minecraft rocks.

it's lego evolved - for the grown up childs!

if you like sandbox games, go for it, i doubt there is anything better out there right now :)

playable on singleplayer and mp (nearly the same version, afaik it's just the nether world that's not working in MP)

the game itself: basically you are stranded on a lone island, no background, no equip, just you and the environment.

as long it's day, you can live quite save, but as soon the nite hits you, you realize you are not alone as you first thought you are. when darkness crawls up on you, so do the zombies! and you better have your save shelter ready by now.

you start to build your first hous(es), dig your first mine, and then you start to realize what you are able to build - everything you can think off! the only border is your imagination (and the sky of corz...)

building houses, cities, trainrailsystems, even computers! all you need to do is mine, and craft :)

Minecraft is a great freeform building system. I just wish someone would make a game out of it. It appears Notch has no plans to do so. A more focused developer will do this.

it actually IS a game :)

Well ty for all the info. It sounds interesting as far a true sandbox game goes. I'll have to give it a try then.

Anyone else reading this after the post above about him implementing the winnable version?

Minecraft is worth it TC, I've spent more time on it than any game the month or so after I got it. I've stopped playing lately, but always check out the updates and such.

    Playing - EVE, Wurm

Retired - Final Fantasy XI, Anarchy Online, Mabinogi

    Waiting - ArcheAge, Salem

Minecraft is both a single and multiplayer game. It's not an MMO, but you can play on servers with at least 150 players (or that's the max I've ever seen on a server).

There's really two ways people play this game. Survival and Creative.

Creative: Is pretty much you having infinite amount of blocks which you can create whatever you want - from castles to stuff like pixel art and ships (only for decoration). Granted, you will need mods for that.

Survival: Is pretty much you gathering all your stuff (blocks, tools, etc) from scratch. You chop down trees, explore caverns for minerals, etc. Then you use those resources to build whatever you want. It's basically you playing creative, but you gotta find your own stuff. I.e. you're not cheating.

Multiplayer: Is just you building along/around other players.

I don't really care for the game, anymore. In my opinion it loses it's fun when you build what you want to build. Another thing I dislike about the game is that all those buildings serve little to no purpose other than decoration. Sure, you can have a cool underground farm.. but with all the food resources available it makes it pointless. Or you can have a huge, ginormous castle yet every room is empty (aside from lights, books or whatever cosmetic items the game has). And once you gain a handful of diamonds (these are minerals you use to make tools.. very good tools) the game is easymode.

[edit] I forgot to mention that my problems could be solved with mods. There are a lot of mods that add content/gameplay changes. Well, a few.

I'm not saying it's a bad game, though. I freakin loved it - I played for a months before I gave up. It's really cool to start from scratch and then evolve into a house. Then that house shapes into a mansion. Then that mansion shapes into a town. Etc..

It's an updated, man childs version of LEGO.

    Currently Playing:

    Nothing.

Minecraft multiplayer is amazing. Single-Player had me hooked until I got bored of building, and bored of starting over, but when I joined an MP server the entire game changed for me. Plus, there are tons of mods to play with, and they come out often.

Notch guy seems more focused on playing portal 2 - but like someone else said someone who  is more dedicated and focused on creating the best game would be better on the project.

Minecraft is a really fun game, All it takes is a bit of creativity and you can have a blast. I personally own a minecraft server and play with my friends. It is great fun building things as a team :). The only problem I find with the game is that its really easy to sink hours into it if you dont pay attention :P. ive logged on quite a few times and said id only play for an hour. 5 hours go by and I dont even realize it haha.

The game can also be kind of scary if you get startled easily lol. Nothing like having a mob sneak up behind you and explode.

I definitely recomend this game to anyone that wants to build structures and be creative.

Minecraft is awesome. It does get boring at times, so you take a break, and then one day when you can't decide if you want to log on your MMO or not, you open up your Minecraft and spend another week building some insane glass dome under the ocean with waterfalls from the clouds... only to forget about it for a bit again and come back. Rinse and repeat.

It is most definitely worth the $20 to just log on at odd intervals to have some fun and then forget about it, since there is no monthly fee attached.

That's enough to qualify for MMO. There are some existing MMOs that only hit that kind of a server pop on a good day.

More focused on portal 2? Maybe if you were to look for the past couple days.  Other than that all I've seen him talk about his how hes doing things for the company (Mojang) and how hes developing his game.

Instead of taking the money he made and staying by himself he hired programmers and artists to make the game better.  I've not seen him take a "holiday" that wasnt related to him being sick or taking a trip to some sort of dev confrence.

I honestly think hes more dedicated to his game than many game developers I've seen.  Not to mention his constant focus, and attention to his community.  They release patches almost bi-monthly with cool new features every time.

I'm not really sure why you think hes not very dedicated.

Im really impressed with Notch and his company. I think they have done a wonderful job with such a simple concept. I really look forward to every patch :)

I've spent some time in Minecraft.

It's a solid game. I usually only play it when watching netflix, or a ufc pay-per-view or after getting high. Minecraft is enjoyable when doing all of those.

Minecraft you just have to play around with it randomly for a good bit before actually having something of worthwhile.

Yeh, I play allot of minecraft, so heres from my view.

minecraft isn't a mmorpg, its more like a lobby based game but every server is a whole new world, so all the items you have will only stay in that world/server. as of the gameplay, you dig, find ores, survive in a sandbox world, and allot of other things.

and thats pretty much it. and then theres mods, and those are the things that make the game fun.

currently playing on a server with territory control meaning you can claim some part of the land, and lose some if ur at war with a other faction or something like that.

and then theres the rpg mode, where u can level up everything u do in the game, like farming, mining, weapon skills.

so mods are the things that make the whole game fun.

and then theres the bad things about miencraft.... griefers, they ruin your things, but it can be elliminated witht he territory mod, no1 can touch you buildings unless they're in the same faction, (or if ur at war with a other faction)

in any case, its not a mmorpg. but I'd say its the best sandbox out there. well worth the money if ur into sandbox games
