Question about the game

ioncannonioncannon Member Posts: 30

Hello,

As probably most of you, I'm eagerly awaiting GW 2. I tried a lot of different MMOs over the years and got to the point where I'm pretty much sick of all of them. I tried GW 1 beta, but that was really long time ago and the reason I didn't stick with it was because WoW came out around the same time and sucked me in. The main reason I play MMOs is for their PvP aspect. So let me finally get to the point. I'm sick of questing, grinding etc just so I can do PvP. The reason I'm here is because I saw Guild Wars® PvP Access Kit in NCSoft store and what I'm asking is, is it a good idea to buy it? The PvP aspect is the only thing that has me interested in GW. I don't care about HoM. Thank you for reading this and please let me know what you think.

I believe all you have to do is by the game and then buy the kit and then you can make characters that are automatically max level and are only able to do PvP.

Yup, I'm aware of that but thank you. What I'm asking is, is the game worth buying. Basically I want to be convinced if the PvP in GW 1 worth it.

Never done it. Theres a trial if you want to try it for yourself. Don't go in expecting the standard combat though, although I would assume you already know that seeing as you were in the beta.

First of all you should look for PvP videos in youtube to get a first impression. Then, try if the trial allows to create PvP only characters.

I watched some videos on youtube already and I liked what I saw, but the trial doesn't allow PvP. Thank you for trying to help though. I still think I might get it since it's only 20 bucks and no monthly fee, plus the money I spend will go to creating my dream game.

Wrong. If you are only going to play the PvP part of the game, you don't need to buy the game. The pvp pack gives you access to the PvP bit + all the skills/item upgrades unlocked.

Is it worth it? I would say it depends on what you want. Guild wars offers only arena based PvP and it is quite complex and interesting. There are lots of combos (even though most of them are never used) and balance is good. You have

    1. 4v4 Random Arenas (RA)

    2. 4v4 Codex arenas (the new TA, team arenas) where you need to use only skills from the "codex" which is the skill set for that specific period. -

    3. Heroes Ascent (HA) - raise to the very top HoH  (the hall of heroes)

    4. 8v8 Guild vs Guild (GvG) - the most competitive form of GW. You need a guild and solid knowledge about the game or you will be annihilated in seconds.

So yeah if you want arena based PvP which is dynamic and competitive, then Guild Wars is your game.

However, there is one huge downside. It will take you ages to get anywhere. Getting to know all the skills will take you a very long time and without playing the PvE, you will be lacking basic knowledge about the game and you will get facerolled the first few months :D A lot of people are all "sure I don't mind taking my time and learning". But the problem is you will get pawned all the time for a very long time and everything will seem super imbalanced. As a result, people just end up quiting.

I don't know anyone who started with PvP right from the start. I remember first starting PvP after playing the Prophecies campaign for a month and it WAS hard. I can't imagine what it is like to start with PvP right away. And there were only 6 professions and a third of skills GW has now. In Guild Wars you don't just master you profession. You must know the skills of all professions in order to be even remotely competitive as there is a lot of countering and adapting to be done.

There are, however, PvP tutorials, simulations (Zaishen Challenge and Zaishen Elite) and the isle of the nameless is a good place to test skill mechanics.

Lets be honest. How helpful are those ?

I just think that it can be overwhelming when you try PvP after you've played PvE. But it would be insane when you start right with PvP and you have all skills unlocked. At least when you gradually unlock them, you get less options and get more comfortable with what you have. But when you have 1500 skills which you have never used before what happens then ? :)

If you've never played GW? Very.

If being overwhelmed by the number of skills is a problem, it's best not to buy the skill unlock packs and instead buy only the PvP acces kit. It comes with a more reasonable number of skills and items and you can unlock the rest at your own pace.
