This doesn't really surprise me. I'm planning on reactivating my SWG subscription this year just to see what I've missed since I stopped playing ages ago.

Regardless of everything that's transpired with the game over the years (good and bad), SWG was my first true MMO, and while I'm waiting for TOR, I'd like to play it to help pass the time, especially since its future post-2011 seems uncertain at the moment. (And, yeah, I know every year people claim it's about to close down, but this announcement was just added incentive for me to check it out one more time.)

"This strategic alignment of development resources better positions SOE to remain a global leader in online gaming and deliver on its promise of creating entertaining games for players of all ages, and servicing the 20 million players that visited SOE servers in just the past year."

I almost fell out of my chair laughing. SOE is no global leader in online gaming.

For me after EQ I never felt SOE has been a  global leader in online gaming.

They're probably lumping in all generations of console games as well. PS 1-2-3, PSP and whatever else consitutes gaming to them.

You're confusing SOE (Sony Online Entertainment) with SCE (Sony Computer Entertainment). SCE does PS3 games, SOE ONLY does online games.

And that "roadmap" for SWG read more like a "year in review" press piece. Nothing new, even though Linda said there would be more info than usual in it.

    Wow! I'm shocked..

    well not really

Guess I'll resub in the remaining months to say bye to my old buddies. I'm not surprised because why would LEC run 2 SW online games at once?

Probably because Anonymous has been launching mass DDOS attacks on Sony for suing the guy that posted the PS3 hacks

20 million logins, trials, webpage visits.  SOEs been in big trouble for years, first smack down was 2007, didnt they take control away from Smed, hes got a boss now I think.      PC gaming is dieing anyways, its all going consoles.   At least thiers one good game coming out this year, BF3, and that was only cause DICE felt like rewarding the poeple that made them.    They know PC gamers built them, sucks we are the little stick anymore.     Man I miss the good old days.   image

All going consoles? No way. Consoles don't hold a candle to the level of tech you can build a PC into. This will not change anytime soon.

People have said games are going all console for YEARS. PC will always be tops for those with the cash for building a sweet rig. Building a sweet rig is not outragous today either.

I will NEVER buy another console. Built as cheap as possible with flimsy componants to cut costs. If I have a extra $400 I would put it into my PC (like I just did).

Console chipsets will NEVER have the quality of the componants you can get for PC.

I think they can see the writing on the wall. Once TOR gets released SWG will have too few subscribers to justify keeping it around. It's too bad. This game could have been so much more.

I don't remember where it came from but I saved it to my HDD when I saw it, console sales has domated PC sales for years.

gaming companies love putting their games out for consoles. it's easier to work with(only 3 seperate kinds as opposed to a million different pc configs), it sells to a much larger market & there's far less complaints.

lets face it, the pc gamers for the most part can easily build a nice rig for $600 but Joe Schmoe down the block is using his system for facebook & email & not much else. plus when it comes time for upgrades its a lot easier for them to go to walmart & pick up a new PS, Xbox or whatever than it is to buy pc parts & try to figure what components work with what & certain specs & all that.

I kinda doubt that pc gaming will ever die but console sales definitely dominate & will probably only continue to grow. Unless of course they get ridiculous on pricing. I'm kinda shocked people were paying over $400 for PS3's when they came out, imagine what the next generation will cost.

That's just software. I bet if you accounted for hardware like console sales VS PC/part sales. Then take into account subscribtions to online games and item mall revenue, the monetary flow would be much closer. Also, is this a global chart or domestic?

The PC side has a lot of alternate revenue variables. Game purchases alone aren't quite enough to judge the entire value of an industry.

Isnt just World of Warcrafts yearly income more or less something like 1.9 - 2.1 billion a year? 12 million X 14.99 X 12months or something like that. I know thats not perfect formula, because some people buy their game time in blocks at a discount and the Asian countrys pays just slightly different style.

But I would venture to guess that this chrat doesnt factor in revenue generated by PC subscritions (obvoiusly). I would even guess that just with recurring MMO subs and DLC and item shops PC games over all generate closer to 3-4 billion.

So about 1/3 of the money generated is supported by what, 1/10th (maybe closer to 1/30th) of the games released?

What would most of you guess? 1 out of every 20 games released in a year is a PC game? I'm sure I read somewhere consoles release about 4x - 5x the number of games as the PC platform does a year.

As much as I wanted to like this game, I really think this is a long time coming.  SOE did good with EQ and EQ2 but the rest have been pretty terrible.

  • KyngBillsKyngBills Member UncommonPosts: 452

If SOE would simply let me combine my 3 Accounts into one so I could play all 6 Toons on one Server I would re-sub until SWTOR...But they'll never do that, or offer a discounted Sub rate for that matter...And that's why I'm done with SWG...It's just a REAL poor value in the current Marketplace...Even if the Game was better than most, and it's not...It would still be a poor value...

It's been a long time coming, but maybe someone over at sony will turn the company where it needs to go, back to making walkmans XD

That pic of software sales doesn't seem to account for the fact that Pc games cost a lot less than console games.  Where you can buy most pc games for $30 on average, the same game would cost you between $50 and $60 for a console.   Then there's the fact that due to pc games (and any kind of pc software there is) being much easier to pirate than console games, companies either have slowed development on pc games or completely stopped selling pc games.   They want to try and say the problem is piracy however, console games are pirated more than pc games are today.

Then of course there is a little something that many don't notice...which is usually a PC game may be priced at higher than $30 only for the first few months of a games release and then it typically drops by $5 every few month's until it only cost you about $19.99 no later than 1 - 2 years later.   A console game starts out at between $50 and $60 when it's first released and 1 - 2 years later it still cost you $39.99 or more unless it was a bad game, then and only then will the price drop below $30.   So console games will always make more than pc games for that fact alone...as far as the games themselves go.  When it comes to gaming overall (including game, hardware and other software) no console will ever come close to making what PC market makes for a company.   I mean think about it, just about every major gaming company has their hand in the PC market for a good reason....whether it be standalone games, MMO's or something else.

  • TeknoBugTeknoBug Member UncommonPosts: 2,156

Today pretty much the majority of PC market are World of Warcraft and Call of Duty games, every other game is pretty much a hair on the chart. EA has stopped PC release of many of their games, I liked their Madden NFL series for PC- can't say the same for the NHL series because they used the Playstation 2 engine even in their last NHL 09 release (which is a downright insult to PC gamers). So far Valve and DICE are one of the few companies that are sticking with PC as DICE's last release Battlefield: Bad Company 2 sold way more on PC than XBox and PS3 combined, perhaps Bioware too but that's too early to tell.

PC game price drops quickly because of the popularity, the more popular the game is, the longer the price stays high (look at Call of Duty games, CoD4 stayed at $59 for 3 years and WoW was $29 for a good 3 some odd years too). If a game isn't selling well or losing population quickly (like Star Trek Online or Tabula Rasa) the price drops within months, I found Star Trek Online CE in the bargain bin 2 months after release for $14 and grabbed it just for the hell of it.

Yes XBox 360 games are heavily pirated, Jtagged console units are fairly common out there.

I think it's just a case of lazy f'tards that can't to a little basic arithmetic in their heads are killing off everything except FPS games.  Lowest common denominator = easiest revenue.  Welcome to the corporate world of the 21st century.

  • Hordequester8Hordequester8 Member Posts: 54

I highly doubt that chart also takes into account the billions in revenue online sales produce.

Console games will never dominate PC games...it's just that simple. The only reason consoles still exist is because there are so many clueless people out there that think PCs are so difficult to handle/upgrade/etc. About the only way Consoles would take over is if our world went down the path of Idiocracy...which I guess is at least a possibility.

More on to the OP, it's sad to see SWG's passing but it's to be expected. I only wish I had gotten to play it during it's Hayday.

That forum post of Amnersy would almost make you think it's gonna be the last year for SWG. Oh well, I don't mind. SW:TOR is coming! :)
