Rift Is Freaking Awesome!

FOR ME!!!

I played Alpha and Beta, and I was among the haters before the game even launched, then came the opportunity to Trial this weekend, and the announcement of 15 bucks drop in price.

Now nothing really changed from Beta to now, except a couple of nerfs and some hot fixes.

Only thing that changed is my way of thinking.

For the longest time now, I've been all about speed lvl'ing and end game, I always pre-ordered to get beta access, and early starts so I could be among the first to end game.

And for the most part I would hit the end way before the first month is over, and there was nothing there, a couple of dungeons, and some BG's, Warfronts, or RvR lakes.

That's not enough to keep someone entertained for a very long time.

But since I decided I wasn't gonna pre-order Rift, and started the game a bit later than everyone else, there was nothing to rush for, so I decided to just play at my own pace, stop up once in a while and enjoy it you know, meet people, talk to people,  help people, and maybe even become good friends with some new people.

Everytime I've got the slightest feeling of becoming bored, I've stopped what I was doing and either started doing something else in game, or log to an alt, or even turned the game off entirely.

And it makes me want to play more, so I appreciate it more.

I'm enjoying myself much more now, than I was racing for the finish line.

And this racing to the end is a growing trend, everyone wants to get to the end and play an end game that isn't there.

At least not what most gamers are used to, because they are used to some older games who have had far longer to expand on their end game.

But I just wanted to give some insight to how I felt, after seeing the front page being cluttered with negative threads.

I'm not saying that Rift doesn't have flaws, but I'm tired of chasing THE mmorpg, the one that's gonna do everything right from day 1. It's never gonna happen.

The most importnant factor in gaming is having fun with it. It took some time for me to get back to this way of thinking, but I'm there now and I'm enjoying myself more than ever.

Rift is a good game, not perfect, but good.

And regarding the server population, I haven't really felt any drop, but then again I haven't played for very long, what I can say though, is that I'm very rarely doing rifts alone, unless it's 3am on a weekday obviously.

But to anyone reading this, if you are thinking about getting rift, then see if you can grab one of those trial keys floating around and just go at your own pace.

Bye for now.

Beazt

Edit: The price drop is not on the official site,  and is actually not really an announcement, but I believe you can find it in a thread somewhere here on mmorpg.

well, said.. at the end of the day something doesn't have to be revolutionary or the one ring to rule them all, but rather just fun for the individual!! :)

And the question remains, who would spend money grinding in this game, when it's the exact same game that we already have available?

@Garvon: I guess you didn't catch what this post was about........

this is the first mmo that ive just decided to sit back and take my time also, and it's been a blast, and its not just the same old game, its a fantasy mmo and its gonna look like a fantasy mmo, just like the similarities of any other genre

@OP! I agree completely, enjoying it thus far. No rush, just having fun.

ive been playing the endgame for a couple of weeks now. the dungeons are really fun and challenging especially if you got a friendly but efficient group. its an entirely different game you are playing though when you are lvl 50 compared to 1-49.

Most memorable games: AoC(Tryanny PvP), RIFT, GW, GW2, Ragnarok Online, Aion, FFXI, FFXIV, Secret World, League of Legends (Silver II rank)

I totally agree with the OP. Rift is not perfect, but it is very, very good.

I also agree with playing at one's preferred pace. There are lots of things to see, read, and do without rushing to end-level. But then, if that's one's preferred style of play, then all the more power to them.

Well said OP. I think we all need to understand that not everyone is going to like or dislike the same games we play.

I'm glad there are people that enjoy playing Rift, because for some of its flaws, it is a very well made game.

Folks constatly gripe about *cough* Aion *cough* but I love it, so their we are.

Agreed here too.  I don't power-level through games and tend to take my time anyway since I am a casual player.  Rift is good clean MMO fun. It may not be the game you will play for 2+ years, but it's worth the money.

I wouldn't pay much attention to the haters.  These seem to be the same people who hate on everything else they play, and they tend to power level through games as fast as they can, then complain about how little content there is.

Take your time, and enjoy the game.  We have other stuff coming down the line soon and Rift is, in my opinion, a worthy themepark to keep me busy for several months. I have been very pleasantly surprised by how much I am enjoying it.

A sure sign that you are in an old, dying paradigm/mindset, is when you are scared of new ideas and new technology. Don't feel bad. The world is moving on without you, and you are welcome to yell "Get Off My Lawn!" all you want while it happens. You cannot, however, stop an idea whose time has come.

It's great to see so many people actually agreeing in a thread here on mmorpg.com! lol I hope Trion finds this to get some deserved appreciation points for what they accomplished after many years of too many mediocre mmos on the market. Nice work Trion. I echo the same sentiment that while not perfect, this is one of the best MMO I've played in awhile.

One thing I will add though, I entered the game with very low to no expectations. I only pushed myself to play it after seeing the free weekend offer, because what did I have to lose? At worst, I figured it would only amplify the many things I enjoy in Aion by comparison. I wasn't looking forward to it's release like many others, and I didn't do much reading on it in the past several months. I was basically oblivious to it existing, and planned to just stay with Aion. Now that the weekend is over, I feel more drawn back to Telara instead of Atreia. I don't have any complaints with Aion and still think it's a great MMO, but Rift might just be an improvement in fun factor that I didn't expect.

I like how you said this because that is my case too about coming with no expectations. Maybe that's why in part we are both enjoying ourselves? We didn't get hyped up about it: not getting hyped up means less room for disappointment if it sucks. Fortunately, for me Rift doesn't suck lol!

But I think a lot of people either expecting WoW or expecting something completely revolutionary were disappointed.

Yeah, I completely agree. Rift is a great game on it's own, and it absolutely made a better impression with a lack of expectations. I'm still not completely sold on leaving Aion for it, but it would be a great second MMO or an alternate if I got bored with Aion. I had a lot of fun with it last weekend, but my interest has kinda waned since returning to Aion. I'm just not done enjoying Aion yet! lol

I'm happy to actually have the choice of two solid, fun MMOs though. I'm drawn back to both worlds, regardless of which game has a bit more weight behind it because of time already spent, friends made, etc. That hasn't happened to me since the release of DAoC when I was still enjoying Asheron's Call with co-workers. I think I ended up playing both for several months too.

I have been RIFT'ing (casually of course) since launch -- McLovin' it.

I'm doing similarly with EQ2 rather than Aion. The thing is, I feel more drawn to Rift for one very big reason, and not necessarily because it's new: it actually runs extremely well on my computer. I love EQ2 and at the moment it offers far more content than Rift does (as it should), but I had to do creative things to get it to work without hitching and stuttering.

Same here. I love being able to turn up every setting on my system to maximum and haven't had a single compatability issue. I've had a couple small bugs in game, but nothing that I couldn't ignore and keep playing. That's really rare for me too. Usually it will be some of the smallest things that breaks my immersion and I start to lose interest in the game if I have to keep finding workarounds just to play it. This is one very polished game, and even if many people don't like it, I hope they can respect Trion at least for releasing a very solid game compared to other MMO developers. Most of the MMOs we've seen in the past several years should not have been released in the state they were in.  I hope Rift's higher interest level and more positive feedback by reviewers shows the genre how a new release should really be done.

I wanted to come back here yesterday but I was stuck in game all day lol Aion has dropped to my 2nd choice now because I'll have to give my next subscription to Rift at the moment. I had the most fun yesterday then I think I have ever had in any MMO.

I got pretty far in all the quest chains, and joined a couple full raids scrambling around to close rifts and stop invasions. I started on crafting to get my mage and cleric a few upgrades. The crafting system is very close to WoW, although a few tweaks here and there improved upon it in a good way (for me at least). It's not as engaging as Vanguard or EQ2 crafting, but I find that kind of crafting gets old quick while this type of simple WoW-like, combine materials and make stuff approach is really the way to go. It serves the purpose of making some good upgrades from all the materials you collected out in the wild, plus adding bonuses to it from rare ingredients found or earned via quests. That's really all I want from MMO crafting.

It seemed like the invasions themselves are scaled to be challenging to the size of our raid, because a couple of the invasion groups wiped half the raid (and I think there were two raids on top of each other for awhile) when we weren't attacking it as a group and focusing/assisting each other. Once we pulled together and attacked like a team, it still took about 5-10 minutes of killing spawns, the spawn points, and boss-like enemies to shut them down. At one point the NPCs were even camping the graveyard nearby and the people still alive had to push them back enough for us to revive. I don't think the AI is necessarily all that great, but at least they came in numbers strong enough to challenge our group.

Thanks Trion for making that happen. Had a really awesome time all day yesterday and looking forward to more this weekend!

The world event is lots of fun! I think the hp's on some of the bosses are a bit much. The one I was helping to beat on had over 500k at level 35. It took us about 30 minutes to down him. I was helping repel some of the invaders because I messed up my roles while experimenting and didn't have a dps one handy, and dps was really what was needed on the boss.

I had an issue though during the invasion: some of my abilities were shut down mid-fight. I don't know if that was intended (I got a message saying that everyone was feeling weaker) or a bug. I bug-reported it in case it was a bug. Other mages in my guild were complaining about the same abilities being unavailable, but no one else did. I'm not sure what was up with that.

I was trying to figure that out too. Not only were there some cases where I couldn't cast, but my entire mana bar went gray a few times. It eventually came back and was immediately at full ruling out a mana drain ability. I think it was still another of their abilities the way it seemed temporary and lasted around the same amount of time each time, but hard to tell. It's a definite problem though if it affects the rewards we get at the end due to the loss of dps.
