Any ups or downs about this game?

Hey all,

I am wondering if this game, Guild Wars, is any good? I like the no monthly subscription fee. So are there any ups or downs about this games. If you have any thing you would like to share, go ahead, post 'em up.

The Ups:  PvP is well made because of the 500 known skills you can use.  Cooperative missions = parties.  Great graphics.  Instant teleport to other cities and towns (you most find the cities and towns first tho).  Great customer support (Just send the report about a bug and they will fix it in 1-5 days).  Slip stream = fast updates.  No hacks or cheats.... yet.

The Downs:  There are some rude people that want to ruin the game.  Getting a party isn't easy but it the same goes to other games.

The only down is getting a party is really annoying, especially in PvP, since alot of monks are snobs, but some aren't. Otherwise, there aren't too many rude people that I've noticed.

The Downs:#1 All the rude, foul mouth, smack talking kids that play this game. Makes you wonder what kind of parents these kids have, sheesh.

    #2 No open PvP areas

    #3 No large scale PvP

    The Ups: #1 Guild PvP

    #2 Fast Leveling

#3 Large amounts of gold in very little time.

    #4 Very balanced PvP

This game is instance hell. Quite possibly if you can take everything wrong with the genre and shove it into a diablo clone you have guild wars. The only thing that keeps me from kicking myself for buying it is the fact that theres no monthly fee. This game is definately for kids 15 and under.

Hmm, thanks all. I just went back to EQ from WoW. I though that game was horrible. I just want to make sure this is a good game. image

look at the screenshots thread, there aren't really any spoilers in it (unless you count seeing the later environments spoilers...)

PvE in general is pretty lame, if you think long and hard about it. You are spending your time beating a severely gimped AI that would lose to a well trained monkey. Best not to think too long and hard why you are wasting time playing games in general actually...

If u like EQ then GW may not be for u. Its heavy PvP arenastyle, very little PvE. Most (if not all) of PvE is instanced, basicaly comparing to EQ is you meet people in freeport/qyenos, but once u go out into Commonlands and beyond, the world is for you and your party alone. Many people put that as a down, but I actualy like this way better. No fighting over mobs, no random encounter with assholes. Kinda brings a feeling of a singleplayer game into a multiplayer game. Reminded me a lot of Morrowind.

If you want a very general describtion of GW's gameplay, then its a mix of Diablo and Counterstrike with a touch of WoW.

I am the type of player where I like to do everything and anything from time to time.

    Pro's: The packaging.

    Con's: Everything else.

There is a general hate relationship towards Guild Wars currently. It might be because it's rated higher than every other games on MMORPG.com but if you want to learn more about it, I would suggest to read the different reviews avaialable on the internet.

    Check these.

    Hmmmm.

I like just to go out and be able to fight monsters and not just pvp all the time. Basically what i like is exploring, encountering battles, meeting friends, and having fun. Do you this game would be good for me?

If you like console type depth to your games then sure pick up a copy.

However if you are an Everquest player then your gonna find it as absorbing as the tv times.

I dont think there is a general hate relationship towards the game in fact quite the opposite, I really wanted to like it so that I could end the subcription fee for EQ2!

I tried and tried to like it ,I got to lvl 20 and realised that I had just seen everything the game has to throw at me and found none of it engaging.

Pick it up on play.com and at least you will only waste £17.99 like me.

Some people will like this game but, it wont hold the current audience for long. Who knows what the future holds though. Many of my gripes are not that serious. Rubbish spell effects that have all the drama of sitting on a whoopy cushion. Everyone looks alike. Mobs are just plain dull even in the higher areas. Community is non existant despite the current "lets have a go at the new game mob" population levels.

Never read forums they can put you off any game try it if you want to just dont expect any depth.

An up side for me is the game can be solo played. I have a baby and when its my turn to watch him I need to get up from the game alot and that makes it hard to group. I have played other games that you just can't solo and I would constantly be like "hold up guys brb baby is crying".

You can't really compare Guild Wars to EverQuest or World of Warcraft, because it's a whole different type of game.  Yes it's a MMORPG (massive, multiplayer, online, role-playing game), but it strips out all of the things that make those other games suck (like waiting times between "zones", camping for hours for a drop, kill-stealing, lag, etc.) and lets you advance just as easily on your own with computer henchmen or other players.  The world is pretty big, but it won't take but a month or so to get to the end of it.  Still, there are a lot of skills to unlock along the way, so even when you're finished, you get skill points and can go hunt for spells you hadn't found the first time.  And that comes in handy for PvP, because you're PvP character can only use spells that your Role-Playing character has unlocked in his travels.

The graphics own every other MMORPG out there so far, and the action is fun.  Zones are instanced for you and your party and while some people don't like this, most do after the hell of other games and competing for spawn points.

No monthly fee is the biggest pro and the biggest con.

Biggest pro is obvious.  Con because any little kid can come along and play this game, and they do.  Now that they don't need mommy or daddy to supply a credit card and pay a monthly fee, there are little dip***ts all over this game.

Which brings me back to point #1  -  instanced zones for you and your select party of henchmen or friends.

It's a great game.  Get it.
