Romanator0 is everywhere.... I mean, 1 minute to answer this with a link!!!!!! Too god damn fast!
Crafting in GW2 it's not so special as a lot of people would like it to be. You know, something along the lines of "Arena.net created and innovative and original idea for GW2" is what followers are getting used to, but this is one of the things that they haven't really surprised us. It even got some people frustrated by it, like spoiled brats when they get a present that's not good enough. But the Crafting system sure has some changes compared to most mmorpgs, something that gives players their freedom to do everything they want without many restrictions and without making crafting a "job".
GW2 took these thoughts and implemented something that will let players be self-suficient and still have some fun discovering new combinations by themselves without much work.
I remember when the crafting system was announced and everyone got all mad because they were expecting something innovative even though ArenaNet never said they were going to innovate that part of the game.
As I've always said, people wanted a crafting system. Obviously most people didn't think the GW1 crafting system was any good(myself included). But then they actually give us one and people complain. SMH.
I actually like that the crafting appears to keep the modularity of GW1, added on top of the new system.
So people can still craft things like poison hilts or whatever and change weapon components around. That was my favorite part of the otherwise pretty low-key GW1 crafting.
If all the various modification types from GW1 are now craftable, it could keep crafters in business, making the most popular kind of weapon mods...
It's hard to make an innovative crafting system when the focus is not on weapons or gear. But this is also one of the things we love about GW and why it is so balanced. Personaly I have never enjoyed crafting that is about collecting ore and woodplanks for weeks just to make something I actually didn't want in the first place (i e Conan). I think the crafting will suit most players just fine.
Crafting in Guild Wars 2 will be a lot like crafting in Guild Wars 1: 100% content free, but not a nuisance. That's not entirely bad; plenty of games manage to have the former without the latter.
They'll add material gathering nodes, and an auction house, so acquiring the materials to craft will be different. But the difference between clicking a button to hand items to an NPC so he can craft something for you and clicking a button to craft the items yourself without any input beyond clicking the button is superficial and unimportant.

They never said they would create an innovative crafting system, just a robust one.
I never said that either.
Nor me!
I just put it out there for the people who expect everything in the game to be innovative.

GW2 crafting sounds fine to me, but I have no experience of crafting in other games to compare it to.
