PlanetSide: Producer's Letter Released

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

PlanetSide Next Producer Andrew Sites has released an early copy of his inaugural letter to PlanetSide Universe. Sites introduces himself as coming to the team just over a month ago. He then reveals that the PSN team has been expanding and that several members from the original PlanetSide team have been brought back on board to create the next-gen PlanetSide Next.

As you know, Planetside Next was announced by Smed via Twitter about a year and a half ago. Since then, the development team has been pining away on a new graphics engine, building art assets and designing new content. To support our ongoing development efforts, the team has increased in size significantly over the past several weeks. We’ve also brought back several team members from the original Planetside art, design and code team, as well as a ton of other talented, experienced MMO and FPS developers – many of whom I will begin introducing to you in my next update.

Read more at the Planetside Universe site.

I don't think Planetside really ever did that well the first time around. Why are companies pushing out a load of these types of game over the next year or two? We got , firefall, tribes, and this? Also Global Agenda is going f2p.

When Planetside launched, it hit the norm of the time (before WoW norm for a peak MMO was ~300k subs)

    So it did quite alright!

The fact theres guys who were involved in original Planetside involved, im hyped!

Planetside was doing extremely well until BFR came about.  That's when the population starting dipping.

It was a fun game to me, even with BFRs.  I can't wait for PS:Next.

So you got 3 new online shooters launching in 2011-2012 and it's a lot? May I ask compared to what?

Planetside remains my favourite PvP experience ever.

Wow, that linked website style is horrible.  Grey and black with scan lines and walls of text in Courier New do not make a pleasing website experience.

I hope they dont try to emulate the original planetside too much. I have a feeling alot of PS fans will be disappointed if they do. Here's hopes to a great sequel. Cheers.

It was fun till it raised the BR to 40 and unlock all certs for that rank. So you will have jack of all trades who does everything solo. Desipte of the said, it is still very fun lashing people around :D best experience ever!

Planetside was my introduction to mmos. It's funny I have never realized that until i saw this article. I still remember getting the beta cd in the mail, the first time loggin in and the shock of seeing so many people at once, mutli person vehicles, and zomg - voice chat. Oh man it was so new and epic!

Looking forward to Tribes personally, but I welcome all of em.

But really in the end I'll go with which ever one offers MORE than onlone FPS... but some sort of persistant world you inhabit... rather than a "lobby area" to find matchups.

I'd consider playing if we had one shot sniper head shots put back in.  ^_^   I hated when they changed it.   I stuck with it for a long time after that even though I hated that change simply because I loved Planetside.   Here is a shout out ot the 4475th Ranger Elite!  Best outfit I ever had the privilege of playing with.

    Same here !

Anyway, I tried Global Agenda and it pales compared to the original Planetside !

God I loved planetside at its peak.  I'd love to see it again before the underground maps spread the population out... and the BFRs came around to try and get us underground again...

Though I don't miss the time when you could ninja any base on the continent, i liked the... whatchamacallit thingy where each base is connected to  a few others...

Ditto.  That's what made Planetside such a great game, it was actually a persistent MMO world.  A lot of these games that call themselves `MMOFPS`s are nothing more than 16-32 multiplayer FPSs with a 3D lobby.

Global Agenda doesnt even make the list..

its more of a Team Fortress style of game.

I will definately be playing it, Ive never lost the love for running over entire squads of people in my magrider. Something about killing people with a hover tank makes me chuckle!

I'm a hardcore gamer that has played most major fps and MMO games since UO.  Planetside is, without a doubt, the best game I've ever played.  It had the best battles, best role variety, and the best progression system of any pvp game I've ever seen.  Nothing compares.

If its graphics hadn't grown so outdated, I'd still probably be playing it today.  The game wasn't perfect, it suffered from some serious rubber-banding issues of targets, especially in large fights.  However, this game was just overall awesome.

To this day, the greatest mmo experience of my life. Nothing has yet to compare or keep me as interested as Planetside did.

i used to spend atleast 10 hours a day on this freaking game, thats how much i loved it! hurry up please!!!

I couldnt agree more, I also enjoyed the fact, as well Im sure a lot of people did, that you could kill a vet player inspite of the difference in time invested into your character. Other games fail when you cant be pvp viable immediately or ever hope to kill a veteran player.
