Faxion Online: Open Beta Impressions

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

MMORPG.com Industry Relations Manager Garrett Fuller has been playing UTV's Faxion Online and has some thoughts to share with our community about the classic battle between good and evil as represented by the game. Check out Garrett's thoughts about Faxion Online and then let us know what you think in the comments.

Faxion is a game that has been flying under the radar for a while now. We first got to see it a few months back and now the game is in Open Beta and continues to appeal to MMO players looking for a persistent world to play in. I guess Faxion can be described similar to Aion with its references to angels and demons. Even though the game is free to play they are working hard to remind players that the persistent world factor is there and that the game is made for players who want to enjoy a new MMO without having to worry about grinding to the top. Many of the team who worked on Faxion also worked on Shadowbane and you can see why PvP is so important to them.

How can you say Faxion has been flying underneath the radar?

Every day that I log into your web site - there is HUGE banner ads for Faxion.

The only reason Faxion is not getting the "player press" a game needs to get noticed is because it's nothing like Shadowbane, it's bug infested, graphics from the 1990's, horrible UI, lacks good game mechanics and has a host of other problems.

So yes it's free, people try it for a few days and then uninstall it.

Faxion needs 6 months to another year of development time.

But like so many titles these days - it will be released "as is" and players will have to suffer for the next year or two while the dev's try to make a decent game out of it.

Too bad - the genre really needs a good non instanced pvp game.

But the repetitive pve grind and no destructible assets - makes this game a non starter for me.

Instead of PvP the genre should be called SvS, (Scriptor vs Scriptor) if you don't know what that means then you never been involved with PKing.

I'll spell it out for ya Hacker vs Hacker

Honestly go play true competitive games against other players like FPS online games, oh wait sorry your scripts won't work on those ROFLMAO.....

Moving on, seen this game didn't raise much interest then again all mmorpg's out nowadays pretty much all suck.

  • YamotaYamota Member UncommonPosts: 6,593

I dont understand why it is said that the game is similar to Shadowbane. That game was FFA PvP with focus on Guilds vs Guild where as this game seems to be two hardcoded factions so a very different animal in therms of PvP.

So what exactly is the common denominator, beside the people working on both titles?

  • bumfmanbumfman Member Posts: 276

I dont know why some people get so passionately negative about new titles that come out. The flippin game is free to play, play it, feel it out, decide if it is for you.

Personaly, if I can find time for another game i'll give it a go. The flaming of new games just for the sake of burning them down before they can gain momentum and be successful is WHY alot of MMO's suck these days. Not all of them mind you but some of them for sure.

My opinion is one of an open mind and not hellbent and spewing forth venomous slurrs and hate because i was burned one too many times by the expectation of some game that I thought might be the greatest game of all time but fell short of my hopes.

Hmm.. is it possible to be passionalely neutral? .. heheh

Nothing here really that couldn't be learned by a quick search on google. I was more or less not coming in for a rundown of some features, but more to hear about what it was actually like PLAYING the game. You might as well have been looking the game up for basic information before writing this and passing it off like you played.

uhm, could you give some information as to why it is junk? Seriously, Im considering to try the game so would be nice to know.

I agree with paulrgod here so I will fill you in. I played the beta a few months ago and what you will find is a clunky UI, really poor graphics for this day and age (Indie games like MO or Xsyon have better graphics), extemely limited customization, a very poor tutorial that will leave you scratching your head after the first couple quests and a payment heavy skill system which would be draining bank accounts from the moment you open your check book.

    I was excited for this game watching vids and reading articles like this, but the game is NOTHING in its current state is nothing like that article, and as someone else mentioned this game needs a year or so more development before it could feasibly even be called a beta. So I would agree that this article certainly paints a picture that Faxion cannot back up, {mod edit}

Shadow bane was an excellent PvP game with lag and crash problems and almost no quests, but you could build cities and it was very suspensfull and even a bit scary. I tried open beta for faxion and was not impressed, grahics worse then Shadow bane , lag like shadowbane and very confusing.  Get a better tutorial , clean up the graphics , lessen the lag and make the game a little clearer as to goals.

Wow... I seriously have no idea what game you all have been playing or how long ago it was you played it but Faxion is really not what anyone described here. Let's hit some points:

Graphics: OK, just because a company doesn't go the way of photo-realistic (AoC) or hyper-anime (Aion) doesn't make the graphics garbage. Faxion is actually right on par with WoW or League of Legends in style and that is what it is... a style. It is cartoony, so what? That is what they wanted and I think they did a pretty good job with it.

UI: Again, really nothing overly clunky or non-user friendly about the UI as far as MMOs go. I have played a lot of MMOs and this one is really pretty straight forward. Never had any issues finding anything. Heck, they even put huge icons on the map so you know where to go to get quests.

Tutorial: Meh, pretty standard fair. A couple basic quests to get you into the feel of the 'world'. Sure, there maybe could have been a little more explaination of the skill tree'ish thing and the queue system but everything doesn't have to be in a tutorial. Yar eons ago befer whinst yon fathers were babes we read ancient tomes called 'manuals'. I imagine their website has or will have one at launch.

Honestly, I was very impressed with Faxion as far as it went. World is fun and light hearted. I never really ran into any lag. Open skill system seems fun to tinker with for that 'perfect' build you want. There are real money elements but they were all optional. You can pay to have skills level up faster if you are in that big of a hurry. You get respecs or if you need more you can buy them if you really need to reset your skills all the time. You want to see an actual crappy cash shop? Play Allods.

Give the game a shot. In a time where every developer seems think that good graphics means an excerpt from Akira or Mobile Suit Gundam it was a breath of fresh air. With the potentially touchy subject of religion I was glad to see they took the entire thing very light heartedly.

I was really excited to play this mainly because you can increase your stats by putting points in it but the graphics and models really turned me off. I uninstalled.

Hey all, thanks for showing enough interest in Faxion to respond to the thread here. We really do appreciate all forms of feedback. Even if the feedback makes Faxion look like a big steamy pile. We're okay with it, because it only pushes us to improve the game.

I wanted to take a moment to urge those of you who have not played the game in a month or two to come back and give it another view. Here are a couple reasons why.

We went into Alpha and Beta as true Alpha and Beta testing phases. So, yes, you most likely experienced bugs, found exploits, and saw some missing elements (or maybe a lot of missing elements). However, the team has been in very close contact with the community, receiving and reacting to their feedback on a daily basis and pushing out fixes and content very regularly to address these issues (once a week).

I think that if you give it another shot, especially with our newest build coming this week, you'll be pleasantly surprised with the significant progress we've been making. Well, except those of you wishing for asset destruction. That's something that is coming down the pipe and isn't something that should be rushed to market. But, it's coming. (That's right, I said it.)

Just remember, we are in Open Beta and we're constantly looking to improve and update the game. So, feel free to check back from time to time and leave your feedback as you see fit.

    Thanks everyone!

    -Brian Lucas

Thank you for your comment Brian.I hope for you and the many gamers that are looking for a great game this is the case. The problem that I have is with the original post.  There was no substance to it. I thought we were going to here his impressions and he would get specific, instead he was probably told by his bosses to do a writeup that puts faxion in a good light.  This makes me want to go to another website to find my information.  If many people like myself feel this then MMORPG will begin to lose their advertisement money...  We come to you for credible information and impressions, not this junk.

Well for starters my comment wasn't really a dig at the game (although it did touch slightly on that!) it was more to comment on the poor article which was supposed to be an 'impressions' article which it wasn't.

But seeing as you've asked how the game is i'll give you my 'impressions'.

First of all i didn't actually think the graphics were that bad, im actually all for a bit of artistic style, but when i played it a month or so ago, it didn't even run properly - very choppy, lots of rubberbanding, poor animations and the most basic UI i've ever seen, but i soldiered on...

Player characters are the most deformed ugly looking abominations ive ever seen - as i said before i dont mind a bit of artistic licence but these 'thing's' feel like someone let their kids loose in 3DS MAX - they're just horrendous.

The few locations i got to explore all seemed ok - nothing amazing, just generic, i felt the colour schemes in some places seemed a little odd, washed out maybe - dont know, kinda hard to explain..

Gameplay was just your usual, though i found the first few quests extremely boring, the worst aspect was that your in some confusing city, and given stupid directions.  I was told to find the thieves or something (cant really remember) down some stairs to the east... ok thats pretty easy.. Go East and there's a dead end, i actually had to run North for a few minutes before finding a path east where the stairs were..  With the way the game runs it takes about 5 minutes to find where you're supposed to be and then you get to fight the thieves... exciting eh??

    Not really - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tUh5iEU6PTs

Then you head back, speak to the next npc and are sent to the same area to collect 10 insiginas from the same thieves you were just killing... /joy

I went exploring some other zones after this - it took me ages to figure out how to leave the city and what i saw outside wasn't exactly filling me with excitement - some enemies looked half decent and as i say some areas looked ok, but all just nothing too exciting..

Well anyway - there's my quick Opinions - but as the games in OB - if your still interested why not download it, there's only time to waste - like mine was.

@Xanther_SB aka Brian - it's great to see people communicating with their communities away from the official boards, would be nice to see this happen more often around here.  I Feel you guys may have come out of Alpha/CB way to early - from my experience this should have really still been Alpha, maybe with a bit of work you guys could have a decent game here, coming to OB in the state it was is certainly a mistake, and to be advertising it on such high profile (and somewhat very Critical!) audiences as MMORPG.com was a very brave move.

But as you said the game has improved a lot since then - i've no reason to doubt that at all, but i wont be downloading to try it again.

I'm sorry my feedback wasn't too favorable.

    Cheers

    Paul

I tried this out for about two or three days then uninstalled it. It's  very laggy and buggy , not to mention  it feels outdated already. It might be a good game with another year to fix it.

  • adoloadolo Member Posts: 66

I too tried it and within 48 hours had uninstalled it. It has a clunky interface with laggy response at times, and the look and feel is dated. No point in really complaining for a F2P game, just not worth investing another moment of my time.

Jules: You know the shows on TV?
    Vincent: I don't watch TV.
Jules: Yeah, but, you are aware that there's an invention called television, and on this invention they show shows, right?

  • bilzbubbilzbub Member Posts: 2

Yeah unfortunately it failed to keep my attention. I uninstalled it the first night. No offense but it seemed cookie cutter. I liked the heaven and hell twist but other than that not much original here. EQ graphic feel which was a big turn off.  meh, i'll keep an eye out though and see what they do in the future

This is why I weep for the future of game design. It is not the developers. They are giving us what we ask for. Uhh... Mom... do I have to walk for like uhhh a couple minutes??? Can't I just teleport there and then just like, hit a button and get stuff? You hit M and the map open us and there are huge icons 'telling' you where all the quest NPCs are. As for finding the objective... it's... a.... quest...

You hit M... for map, and then run toward the big gate looking icons that when you mouse over them say.... gate. If the developers are reading this thread please take the feedback with a grain of salt. Not every gamer wants to be spoonfed. Just because you all had the artistic license to make the game look like a cartoon doesn't mean it has to be designed for four year olds. Unless that was the goal. In which case, sorry. Carry on.

I tried the game.I played when I wanted to quit. After 3 hours I couldn't take it any more. I deleted it from my computer. In two words......SIMPLY AWFUL.

Even if tons of other people come with negative posts, I'm definitely gonna give it a try when it is released. :)

    I just tried this today.

    Just now in fact.

Just killed mobs up to level 10. Had a handy 25% bonus scroll drop and plenty of gear drop.

Graphics aren't much to write home about. The levels are designed very well and the animation responds to your actions. When I buff I get a nice visual showing me it worked, when I hit an attack I get a nice visual that it worked. Pretty standard stuff you'd think, but not all games do this very well. (RIFT ahem)

It's pretty old schools standard otherwise. I didn't do any quests but the ones to get me out of the "Hi, you're here." zone. WASDQE controls worked fine, the interface pretty universal.

I missed being able to alot my points. Looking at my role as a reaver and the cross classing options.. The stats.. How you get stats.. What they affect.. Put in mind pvp and group tactics..

YOU can totally tell some of Shadowbane's better features are here in the numbers. Plus some features sadly from games that have came since.

Like time ranking of abilities. Eh, don't care.

I don't think I'll play it any more, but there's good stuff there and if it improves I may go back.

Will develop an original MMORPG title for money.

Unfortunately I have to agree with the laggy and clunky UI and outdated graphics (and no it doesn't even close to WoW). The minimap on UI was also horrible. Game might be good as I cannot comment on that as I only lasted maybe just an hour. I don't believe graphics and UI is everything but somehow game didn't really take me in, maybe the combat or the dullness of starting area. Only thing I noticed as interesting was the talent stuff but that wasn't really enough to keep me in game.

  • EQ2ThanosEQ2Thanos Member UncommonPosts: 55

haha Warzod I totally agree with you :).Gamers that don't want to think and just get everything which ends up dumbing down games are  one of the reasons MMORPG's are dying.I want a challenge in a game.

  • Hellscream07Hellscream07 Member Posts: 123

As someone mentioend, saying this game has been "flying under the radar" when you guys have a huge banner of it it's kinda ironic xD But I didn't think much of it till I read this review...

Personally I'm not playing any MMO at the moment, at least till GW2 comes out. Just come here to keep up with the news and such. However, this game looks promising, especially since I've played Shadowbane for quite a while :)

Will definitely be following this. Any approx. Release date?

Wait you had to spend 5 MINS of your time exploring to complete a quest?  UNACCEPTABLE!  I only play games with Huge arrows pointing in the direction I need to go with the final destination marked with road flairs.  Ill never try this one, thanks for the warning.

  • JumdorJumdor Member Posts: 62

In personal opinion. The game came off as rather straight forward. All the stuff you can get from most any other game of it's kind was there. I thought the graphics were rather quirky which is a plus for me. When I did the same thing I would in any other mmo that's what sent me to the uninstall. I know that seems harsh, but it's hard for me to hold to any thing in modern gaming that doesn't throw something at least a little different at me.

I think the only thing that really bothered me was how huge the city was. I understand the whole trying to make social areas seem big and lively, but really do they have to be so big that it's like running across states to get some where?

I am very tired of seeing huge vacant areas in game. I don't care if stuff is a little tight at least I wouldn't feel like I'm living in giant land and running across a kitchen floor trying to get cheese. I like a challenge, I like having to search for things, I like to adventure, I don't like to see cities with areas that would echo with the noise of your own hollow footsteps. Maybe this game is only meant for the casual gamer, but there are a ton of games already providing that.

This all comes from personal taste, and since it's free it is simply a matter of taking the time to download it and try it yourself. Free is free.

    @EQ2Thanos - Agreed...

@alderdale - Hahaha! That is all...
