I want a game with a combat system that's completely skill-based. If I'm absolutely amazing and you suck, I should come out of combat unscathed while you're on the ground licking my boots. Anyone know of a game like that?
EDIT: By skill based, I'd like to change the definition of what I'm looking for here a little. If I'm at 100% health up against 2 other players with 100% health, it should be completely possible for me to kill both of them assuming I'm talented enough to perform the feat.
Some of the suggestions to be crossed off the list:
Bloodline Champions (romantor0)- Was one of the most prominent players in their Closed Beta phase, even earned the title of "Contributor" for being one of the first players to shoutcast competitive matches as well as holding some tournaments in conjunction with BLGaming.com. Unfortunately, after Funcom took over, there was a whole lot of clash between the developers and the producers. Things went down into core game mechanic flaws, serious balancing issues, lagg/latency issues, and bad marketing strategies. If someone's able to tell me "that's gotten better" then I'll be willing to try it again.
Guild Wars (romantor0) - Yes, skill-based. But it still has the MMO-style combat, meaning if there's 2 of them and 1 of me, it's nearly impossible for me to kill both of them unless they're asleep at the keyboard. Not to mention, Guild Wars 2 is coming out soon, so instead of purchasing the old game, I'd prefer to just wait for the updated version.
Mount & Blade (sazabi) - Love this game to death. Thanks for bringing it to my attention again - I'll be trying this out. The point of this thread was to try and find something new, but I appreciate the mention/reminder.

Street Fighter.
This is not a troll, flame, or anything else worth banning me over. It is simply my pure opinion, and I have a right to share it.
You could try Guild Wars. Kinda slow but gear is a negligible factor.
Bloodline Champions is entirely skill based.
Vindictus might fit the bill. I don't know how much of a difference gear and levels make in PvP though.
DOTA
LoL
HoN
The MMO game that comes closest to what you're describing has to be WWII Online. (AKA Battlefield Europe). It is completely dependant on skill...not gear acquisition or 'level'. No other game comes close that I"ve played, and I've played over two dozen MMOs. I suspect Planetside may be similar, but I've not played it.
Ehh, GW ( Guild Wars) has kind of a "skill based" card system... not really skill based like an FPS would be considered skill based, and not skill based like Darkfall.
Next would be either Darkfall or Mortal Online, both are closer to Oblivion in the way the stat progression and combat plays.
DCUO has possibly the most fun combat system, but its more combo and player skill based... similar to say, Batman Arkham Asylum or Prototype in Multiplayer.
Vindictus is kind of a mid point between that and Phantasy Star Online... but its free, so theres nothing to lose there... though its hub based and not a full open world (so is Guild Wars)
Then you have games like TERA coming out soon which is pretty much action combat based around player skill.... much like Phantasy Star was.
Then we have FireFall which is upcoming too that will shirk the norm, but this is more of an FPS.....
for an FPS MMO right now I would only really recommend Global Agenda which has gone free to play, and relies heavily on player skill, but is hub based for the most part. (global agenda is actually a third person shooter)
As this man states, I would advise Global Agenda, gear plays a minimal role, it is based for the most part on skill, of course the class epics count slightly, but your specc and your skill in the game count.
99% mmos do not qualify for that unfortunately.
you should try mount & blade.
used to play jedi knight 3. could kill dozens with minimal scratches if force and guns were turned off.
too bad its rather old game now.
SW:Jedi Academy is what I play to get that sort of fix, even after something like 7 years nothing has surpassed it.
It's not an mmo though, max on privately owned servers is 32 (the game lists all of them for you together though).
Look up multiplayer gameplay videos on youtube or something it get a feel for it, make sure it's the multiplayer though because the signleplayer plays completly different and just plain sucks..
You'd probably have to download it off a torrent site to get it by now, but one good thing is that those copies work for online Oh and you'll need the JA+ update in order to play with the larger population.
wrong way to advertise that game tbh.
most videos on youtube are exactly some ja+ noobin around. ja+ screws the game's already rather questionable hit detection and blocking mechanics.
the real deal is in modless duel servers or tffa pugs.
here:
a video which id say gives idea of the real gameplay
Updated the OP with some information/games I've crossed out.
For the Star Wars thing, I'm not sure what exactly I'm looking at. Is it just whoever hits the enemy with the lightsaber first gets the kill? Is the hit clientside or serverside? Wouldn't there be latency issues all around? There's just so many factors that go into a game like that which could potentially cause core mechanical flaws.
its not about the first hit lol, the game is definitely not realistic even in star wars movie kind of way.
yes latency plays a big part, its quake 3 engine based game after all.
i dont know... i guess i just had a nice way getting into it.
always liked star wars found a great community, quickly found lots of buddies etc, then slowly i started to get the mechanics, how everything works etc. progressing and learning was really nice.
so i guess you could say that the best way to get into the game is no longer possible - most of the player base is gone.
im not playing it anymore and im not sure ill ever install it again, but... im pretty sure jedi academy is one of those games that was not replaced by any other. id add blade of darkness and dark messiah to the same list. all three of them are based of sword combat, yet nothing comes close to that experience.
maybe some day developers will have a trend to create that kind of games. in past two years every company is creating MOBA genre games (blc, lol, hon, countless asian ones). who knows whats next.
Vendetta Online is the only truly skill based game I've ever played. Check it out.
By skill based u mean whoever has the best cash shop gear if its f2p or whoever has the best hacks lol.
Being a pessimist is a win-win pattern of thinking. If you're a pessimist (I'll admit that I am!) you're either:
A. Proven right (if something bad happens)
or
B. Pleasantly surprised (if something good happens)
Either way, you can't lose! Try it out sometime!
There is no cash shop as it's not f2p. And in 4 years I've seen 1 hack which was swiftly corrected.
ofcourse its skill-based since its pretty much a shooter like freelancer.
Savage 2
The best pvp I've ever experienced in a game.
Epic, Intense, satisfying, Destructible assets! FUN and free to try out.
Good players can kill 4 or 5 players easily.
My favorite game of all time that I keep coming back to over and over again.

I never played BC, but the closest thing to MnB would be MO. The combat was really interesting overall, it works right, but it needed to be a lot 'tighter' in how it's controled. It sucks early on, but as you get weapons skills you reel back for attacks a bit quicker, then it gets faster (slightly), but not enough imo. There is blocking in it too though, and it works.
A good PvP-only GW clone would have been the now-down Fury. It was pretty fun, and you could own in PvP on day one.
My personal suggestion would be trying Shin Megami Tensei, even if just for a little bit. It's combat is like Mabinogi, so you basically do a melee version of paper/rock/scissors, but there are guns and magic as well. The series has always been like an "occult pokemon", where you negotiate with demons to join your team and fight other demons - but you fight too. Your F-keys are used for the pet attacks, and you use the normal hotbar for yourself. It's very possible to get well-timed chains off on a mob to where it can't fight back, especially if you exploit weaknesses (elemets, etc). It got PvP not too long ago, but I stopped playing it long before that, so I can't explain how it works... but I do assume the pet + player combo w/ direct controls could be interesting.
Also, if you like Metal Slug, there is a Korean clone of it called Metal Assault that's in CB w/ Aeria Games (same people that run SMT). The PvE is standard fare w/ bosses, like metal slug, but the PvP is pretty damned fun. You get omnidirectional shooting, and you move pretty quick and get dodge maneuvers. Get's pretty wild, youtube some vids or check their site if interested.
