OK I been watching this one for a while. I actually had a friend who wanted me to give this a try despite the fact I seen some really bad stuff about this game.
The good -
(1) It is fun to play if you love pvp
(2) you can research stuff up and virtually play for free
(3) you can make multiple tanks and do all kinds of variations
The bad -
(1) It has a cash shop with an I win button the size of Texas. You can buy gold then use that to buy all kinds of stuff including special rounds for your guns that do more damage, consumables that let you fix your tank and so forth.
(2) There is no open world there is 6 maps that rotate in random battle. This game is a co-op much like counterstrike or team fortress, except instead of toons you have tanks.
(3) T You got to watch your fire, but so far after 2 days of playing it I have seen 4 deliberate team killers. I actually had one of them get behind me and took me out then proceeded to kill 3 more tanks on the same team. And was laughing about it in chat. Meanwhile everybody was telling him hey this is your last day to play. So hopefully they booted him.
Not an MMO - This is not an mmo like I said it is a co-op. Even if you do pay the 15 bucks there abouts to create a team it is still a map based system, over and over. So you learn where to move your tank to hide and where not to go. The maps I have player are all capture the flag type. The should actually de-list this game from mmorpg.com and move it to the rts board where it really belongs.
So with that being said this game is for folks who love pvp, its about as good as it gets, if your smart you don't get ganked.
Comments
If MMORPG.com lists World of Tanks, it also needs to list all of the battlefield series and any other FPS where you gain xp to unlock new gear.
I mean c'mon..
Hey erictlewi, you still trollin i see.
Btw, theres 16 maps not 6, and those "I win" consumables only give you a single repair for the battle rather then 2 minutes like the normal ones which is technically a waste since the gunf or exampe can still be shot out right after using it then you back to where you started with a broken gun... and imo GOld rounds are too expensive, those who use it are wasting their money, the gold rounds being used will die off soon when the pre-order people use up all their gold on that.
Ive been playing a few weeks now, and close to surpassing where i was in beta.
Yes they need a LOT more maps in this game, while the ones they do have are pretty good, for this type of game 16 gets repetative FAST. I would like to see mabey 30ish maps and then on top of that tier specific maps, so you dont get sick of the standard ect. Games new and i expect more so not a big deal, and like i said the 16 they have now are pretty solid maps.
There is good variety of tanks and tank type, however it seems to be basically a game of heavy tanks and artillery on most maps. If your going to jump into this game go heavy tanks first, youll just have more action, unless you like camping the majority of the game as a tank destroyer (who cant stand up to a heavy tank without support even at higher levels), camping base and doing artillery, or scouting as a light. Medium tanks seem to be more "i dont have a heavy yet" type of tank, more food for heavies and tank destroyers. The less action oriented classes do bring added dimensions to gameplay, and are great food for heavy tanks. Heavy tanks usually are the tanks getting most of the kills exp and credits per match, however sometimes tank destroyers can compete on a few maps that cater to snipers (heavies can sniper nearly as good with less setalth however)
Also, as of now, being a russian developed game, you guessed it, the best preforming (not on paper) tanks are in fact all on the Russian tree. I do believe the developers even stated they were biased to Russian equipment (as to appease their home market). It may get balanced for the NA market however. THe margin of greatness of the russian equipment over the others is somewhat marginal however, but youll notice when fighting your equally equipped russian counterpart. Things like armor value and sloped armor is another russian advantage, as russian tanks are thin armored, however sloped armor is the better thing to have in this game,as shells will bounce a LOT on these vehicles, negating a real need for armor. Super precicion shots are needed, and difficult to do in the heat of battle when you most likely are targeting a red outline of the tank (blocked by bushes ect).
SO to sum it up go Russian, and make sure to level into heavy tanks first for more action.
The only thing thats really bothering me about this game is its players. Try to form a plan quick before the battle starts and get cursed at, or have everyone just ignore and ideas and just go for their kills, usually someone will step up and give you the "thats a bad plan do this isntead". Match starts and everyone just does what they feel is best and its usually an uncoordinated mess. Little attention is usually applied to working as a team and achieving an objective, and you can only group with a few players in a match so you cant party a whole team. Lots of matches where people would rather lose and not die than cap and possibly win, or people who hide in a corner of the map and afk for the xp. Lots of people not aware, who will block their own teammates from escape to secure a last shot ect. Random battles in this game are 90% some of the worst team work ive ever seen in a game. I stay out of general chat so no complaints there. If your going to get into this game, get into a good clan asap and bring your patience for some horrible displays of gameplay and teamwork.
Now for the cash shop. Yes its set to be a huge money trap, however for buying a premium account (you gotta buy more gold than you need for it or waste gold buying a less than 30day premium account). They have premium vehicles which are XP and credit machines, however you got to spend cold to convert that XP to usable XP (since you cant upgrade or level premium). Gold can be converted to credits. Premium account gives you double XP/credic. Later on youll need to grind a low tier vhicle for money since higher tier vehicles are very expensive to repair and resupply, unless your premium.
Other than that its a pretty fun game most at times, has a lot of potential, and is a great break from mmorpgs, they play on adding a whole lot more vehicles like french (lol) british and more american lines. Eventually its gonna have a ton of variety.
My favorite part of the game is that there are no factional teams, teams are a mix of all vheicles and nations, however the matchmaking system gets the match right about 70% of the time, leveaving 30% of the games as WTF moments.
All I have to really say is there IS more bad then good in this game. I have to agree that it isn't an MMO, just because it has a lot of people playing don't mean its an MMO. Its more like Call of Duty you get into the game, click quick battle, then get teleported to map, play, and repeat. The Devs are not doing the game justice either. Still trying to "fix" problems that have been in the game from closed beta. Don't even try to bring up the "but the game is free" argument there are still people paying for that game so they at least need to feel like their money is helping improve the game other then, buy drinks for the occasional office party.
I played this game in closed beta and returned to it recently to check it's progress. Tier 1 and 2 are very enjoyable primarily due to there not being any SPGs. Even though there is very little actual team work the layout of the maps and the tank setups make for enjoyable seek and destroy combat using "crawling" tactics like real tanks. Unfortunatly, beyond tier 3 the game falls apart just as I had pointed out during closed beta. The primary reasons are the SPGs, heavy tank populations are excessive and recon light tanks that you are forced to grind in don't have a role that is equally contributive as heavies or mediums.
One or two SPGs are not to bad but most maps now have four or five on each side. This means the moment you fire or assault an enemy position you are near instantly attacked by the equivalent of four or five B-26s. In short, instant death. Another problem is the kill stealing from SPGs. While you get points for damaging enemy tanks killing them and tea bagging the driver is very PvPer rewarding. The problem is you shoot a tank and damage it and while waiting for reload timer to score the kill the SPGs obliderate him instantly robbing you of your "victory". This occurs again and again accross the map.
Heavy tanks own the map and they should as they are heavies. The problem is numbers are way to high for such small playing fields. Worse the heavyies have greater visability ranges so they sit on choke points and terminate light and medium tanks before you even see them...as in one shot you. I mean shouldn't a "scout" tank have the highest sight range?
As was said before, if you can buy your way into a heavy that can take SPG death from above poundings you will probably enjoy the game a lot. If you choose to grind through the medium tanks that where designed to be flexable vehicles for use across large fronts spanning 100s of miles then be prepared for disappointment and lol game play. I mean the Germans only had what? 60 or 65 Tigers on the Eastern front of all the 100s of armored vehicles at Kursk, come on!
The late light/early medium grind is very frustrating. It saps not only your will to play (you get no kills, can't damage anything and are slow to boot) but also your credits (again, no kills, can't damage anything, too slow to scout...etc).
The lower and higher tiers though are awesome and i find the game really fun and i do see myself playing this long term.
MMO wish list:
-Changeable worlds
-Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads
Carl,
You know full well those maps are gated to which tanks you are using. So you may see all 16 maps once you play all tanks level 1-10 but once you settle into a certain tier/level of tank you will end up ont he same 6 some odd maps at best over and over.
The consumables and special ammo are hardly I win buttons by anymeans (as you stated) and the "gold" ammo is actually less effective than the nornal rounds. It is just an RMT sink that most people are suckered into.
