About two weeks left and I can play MMOs again non-stop!
Left WAR in August of last year so I can focus on a full year of classes. A LOT has changed in WAR but I'm thinking of giving this game a try if it's worth it. Obviously, I could just spend the money to buy Rift but I don't want to do that since I'm a poor college student.
Any WAR players here? Which game would you recommend?

WAR is primarily a PvP game and Rift is primarily a PvE game. PvP exists in Rift, but it's limited to random world pvp and instanced war fronts. Not sure about the PvE in WAR.
Rift's endgame is basically the same as WoW's - tiered instances and then tiered raids. There are some open world raids where you can fight against the opposing faction, but the main track is instanced dungeons and raids.
I think Rift is better at what it does than WAR is at what it does, but Rift doesn't do what WAR does.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
I played WAR and i'm playing Rift, and Rift is better. Where WAR has static public grouping areas, Rift has moving rifts which can appear anywhere, which then develop into footholds and then invasions which roam across the lands and need to be stopped through player cooperation. Rift has elements of WAR but done in a more interesting and involving way.
Like everyone I was reminded of WAR, and EQ2 and even WoW when I started playing but after the initial starter zone Rift has a character all it's own.
My advice? Play Rift over the summer, I will be. At least until GW2 and TOR come out...
My advise is not to choose Rift simply because it has Rifts. They get as old as PQs after a while.
You played WAR, so if you really like to PVP, then I wouldn't play Rift. It falls very short in the PvP department.
.. But in a good way.
How are the warfronts? Are they dominated by premades, too?
Yes, and yes, they faceroll as much as in WAR, and yes, the concept is exactly the same plus more and worse class imbalances than in WAR (and I say that as an ex-shadow warrior AND an ex-chosen) ...
Seriously, if you want fun PvP, WAR Is miles and miles ahead of Rift.

I've recently played a trial of Rift and have started the trial for WAR. Rift didn't grab me but WAR has. Technically speaking, Rift is better polished and built. But something about WAR makes me want to log in and see the world. I can't say that about Rift.
I want a mmorpg where people have gone through misery, have gone through school stuff and actually have had sex even. -sagil
I'm glad you liked WAR. I liked part of it, tested the beta also, but ultimately I still feel like Mythic let me down. I'm holding out for a multiple faction pvp type with pve that doesn't suck. In the meantime I'm toying around with RIFT. I'm having fun in RIFT so far.
If you want to play a game that has a real future, play Rift, as War appears to be on life support. If playing a popular game with a future doesn't appeal to you, just ask yourself what's more important between PvP and PvE. Rift has far better PvE, but its PvP is relatively limited, and the battlegrounds are pretty much generic standard fare for the genre.
War has had time to develope and change from a halfway decent game into a decent game.
Rift is fresh out of the gates and already a winner. There is enuff to keep you bussy the whole summer easily with Rift. The soul system alone is worth the purchase in my eyes.
The fact you can have all 9 souls and 4 different mixxes of any 3 souls to use whenever you want is enuff to make it a winner in my eyes.
I am a cleric but....
I can PvP really well with my full warden/templar/inquisitor mix.
I can tank expert dungeons with my Justicar/Shaman/Sentinal mix
I can dps range with heals with my full inquisitor/Justicar mix
I can be a group healer with my hybrid Purifier/Sentinal/Warden mix
and any of those are just a click of a button to change to the style role you want to use.
If I get bored of my soul mixes I can always wipe them and rebuild the points in other ways for a small bit of coin. I really couldn't be happier with this game. Rift all the way.
Only reason you might want to stay with War is due to being familiar with it or if you like the Warhammer lore more. Other than that I would say... "Welcome to Rift" Hope to see you on Emberlord PvP server.

I'm not really concerned about the future of WAR or Rift because I'm waiting for GW2 or SWTOR. I'm going to play either Rift or WAR to pass time.
As for PvE vs. PvP, I like both. If, for example, a group wants me to do dungeons then I'll do that. If I can't find a group then I'll queue for warfronts/scenarios. HOWEVER, I'm casual so I've never joined a premade in my life. I hated being farmed at the spawn camp in WAR which was one of the biggest reasons I left.
If Rift suffers from this problem (meaning premade domination) too then I'll just play some single-player games or just watch TV.
What? How do you do this?
If you're a botter, then Rift warfronts are for you. Rift has made very clear that they won't mess with people who bot in warfronts.
And for the last 2 weekends there have been Free Trials.... so if you missed... tough for you.
Allies of the Ascended was a free weekend two weekends in a row. Bummer ya missed it.
The following statement is false
The previous statement is true
Rift PvP on PvE servers is pretty much all pre-mades once you get about level 30+. On PvP servers, there's alot more open world PvP, especially in areas where the Defiant and Guardians quest nearby (primarily 25-30 and up). I've been in a huge PvP open world battle once with my guild, however there really isn't a point to it, you get some favor for kills, but that's about it. I've heard that they plan on making open world pvp more prominent on PvP servers, with quests to raid the opposing factions captial cities, towns, and outposts, with big rewards for the capital city raid. (just what I've heard on the forums and in-game chat)
As someone who has 2 level 50s, and 4 other characters (and former WAR player for 1.5 years), I can say that if you want to pvp all the time WAR is probably more for you. Rift can be sort of a quest grind to level up, and is fairly linear until about level 35 (then you have 2 choices of where to level, but you'll probably end up doing both). If you like to do both I would choose Rift. I can settle for Instanced warfronts for my PvP fix, and WAR's PvE isn't very good at all.
I really wouldn't bother with how low WAR is on pop right now.
WAR for PvP it is by far better than Rifts in pretty much every way. Just make sure you find a higher pop server.
Rift for PvE, WAR's PvE is pretty terrible.
Well, and the unique classes, the keep raids, the better balanced PvP, the non-standard class mechanics, the city pvp, the world pvp, the non-raidgrind-endgame...
The problem with Rift is: They tell you that you get 8 different souls on 6 races, but in fact you get range DPS, melee DPS, tank and heal. Eth and Mathosian are the exact same models, ELves and Kelari are the exact same models/animations. spells are the same particle cloud with different colors, armor is the same army unisex standard for anyone...
What drowns in Rift's glorified multiclassing system is the actual identification with your character. This maybe a non-matter for WoWoids and people who consider their avatar 'pixels with minmaxable abilities to pwn things'.
Anybody who tries to get immersed and create something uniquely coherent as a character, not even in an RP but in a general kind of way, pretty much hits a brick wall with RIft's exchangeable, generic classes.
I'm all for variety in skills and abilities, but you don't go from astrophysics specialist to orchestra musician in real life, why are instant swaps from full healer to full dps in games necessary?

EDIT: And compared to WAR, don't get me started on the complete lack of useful tools against PvP-healers. There are near to none healing debuffs on the usual healer-killers (rogue) and a dire few on the glass cannons (mage). And that's just one of a whole list of imbalances compared to WAR.
Pretty much this.
Overall the general consensus seems to be:
Rift - Better PvE than WAR, with an endgame of dungeon and rep grinds, followed by raiding.
WAR - Better PvP than Rift. You know the endgame to WAR :P
To me, once I got past the "Ooh shiny!" of the Rift system and the soul system, I was fairly disappointed. A lot of the souls felt either generic to me, or just like one I had already tried.
.. But in a good way.
Yeah, this is a rehash, but it is so true.
If you mainly want PvP, save your money and go back to WAR. Maybe play a ftp for some casual PvE. If you mainly want to PvE, RIFT is worth buying, it will have enough to keep you busy for the summer, but the PvP is...unfinished is the kindest word I have. I do expect it to get better, but probably not this summer.
Thanks!
I do like to PvP and PvE (maybe more on the PvE side) and I asked the same question on the WAR official forums and somebody said very few ppl do dungeons anymore in WAR since almost every set gear can be bought. With regards to instanced PvP, I'm screwed either game since it looks like neither separates PUGs from premades. So the deciding factor then is which game would offer better PvE (dungeons) and it looks like Rift over WAR.
I played Rift to 50. I personally went back to WAR since I mainly PvP plus I like the lore better.
If you want PVP WAR is defintely the winner...but Pve Rift has on lock.
