Bioware has revealed new information on the latest novel based in the Star Wars: The Old Republic universe. The new book is titled "Revan" and is being written by Drew Karpyshyn, Principal Writer at BioWare and author of the Darth Bane series of Star Wars novels. The new book will reveal information about the Sith Emperor, where he came from and how he came to power.
Q: What other characters from Knights of the Old Republic and Knights of the Old Republic II might we expect to see?
A: You can't tell a story about Revan without also exploring his companions; they were such a key element of the KOTOR experience that it wouldn't feel right without bringing some of them back. Of course it would be impossible to include all of them in a novel in a way that would make a cohesive and fulfilling story, so I focused on those who felt most directly relevant to what happened to Revan after the KOTOR games. I don't want to give too much away, but Canderous, T3-M4, the Exile and Bastila Shan all have significant roles to play in the novel (along with some significant characters who appear in Star Wars: The Old Republic).

Pathetic update to an game that wont be released untill atleast 2012
What a nice Friday update: a new set of brutalized bits of tree, stuck to together, with words written on them, gets announced, and the glorious off-topic section gets removed.
Um hello, its a SW book, of course I intend to read it!
Retired: EVE, SWG, STO, EQ2, Ryzom, AO, LotRO, FFXI
Currently Awaiting: SWTOR, TSW, ArcheAge
I'm definitely gonna buy this novel as i've always wanted to know what happened to Revan.
Good update
While I appreciate a good book and will most likely buy it simply as a lore buff, I fail to see how a book by a third party writer, published by a third party company has anything to do with a game update...
I still feel it slightly odd that I was able to get more game play footage from peoples shaky cell phone cameras from Paxthan we actually got from Bioware themselves. They could have at least thrown together a few game play videos of some of the people playing from Pax, or possibly even interviews from people who played it, I dunno something game related, not a book reveal that is half a year off from being released.

Are you completely ignoring the role that the author of this book is playing in the development of the game? Do you really not see how this is helping to set the stage for the game?
My problem isnt with the book, like I said I will purchase the book and read it, my problem is that they basically used a giant ad for it as their Friday update. The book also will not be a key part in playing the game, and Erickson has already said you wont miss any key plot points or story lines if you choose to not purchase or read the books.
What I was saying is I would have liked something game play related, not a push for a book that isnt launching till later this year. Hopefully this is not an indication of when the game will be launching also.

Awww, poor you.
That said, I don't know why people hinge so much up on a weekly update. Wasn't that IGN? Gamespot? Whatever review this past week? That had a lot of stuff.
I can't understand how week after week people B&M if they personally don't enjoy that weeks update. I know people enjoy getting upset so they can B&M, but stop Spamming f5 on fridays and just wait for the juicy stuff to be revealed.
In general I find people who're getting all ecstatic of glee and gloating in their desire of seeing a game fail, pretty sad. It's some weird mental wiring to get pleasure from seeing a game fail, seems to me the same level of enjoyment that people can experience by seeing a building go up in flames, or a skyscraper fall down in a cloud of dust, or see a cruise ship sink. Shrug, ah well, to each their own little pleasures in life.
As for the book, hmm, he might be a great writer, but generally I find books based on games and such not on the same level as regular fantasy and scifi books.

Its a bi product of Bioware saying they would do Friday updates, when a company says that people well....expect updates. Personally I think Bioware should have just avoided saying they would do weekly updates and just did it the way ArenaNet is doing their game reveals. Putting together nice bunches of information and then releasing it in nice little spaced out chunks.
As for the complaining all it shows is that people are craving new information on the game, which isnt a bad thing and shows how many people are really interested in it and are dying to find out more. If no one cared about the game, no one would be upset when a game update failed to meet their expectation or excitement.

threads about friday updates have been getting deleted out of general discussion for a long time due to them wanting it all consolidated into the thread for the update so GD doesnt get cluttered with useless pointless threads. i dont see why thats so hard to do, but many people seem to think their thoughts are so important it deserves its own thread.
edit: swanea, it was pc gamer and some german game magazine called buffed that had alot of info come out of them this week plus the fansite summit that starts sunday. however that has an embargo on it but it has been suggested that is scheduled to come off same time as the press embargo from the uk event(which i would have thought was lifted since the pc gamer and buffed articles but apparently not).

That sounds entirely plausible.
Also Drew is doing the writing for all the stuff wrapping up the kotor games in TOR.

Hey Folks,Hall Hood is the Jedi Knight's class writer. Drew did some work on the Jedi Knight when Hall was slammed with other responsibilities but Hall is the primary. Drew's work on the project has been as more of a jack of all trades, helping out wherever he can and graciously bringing his wisdom and years of experience to everything from character design to training of new writers. If there's any specific place Drew owns, it would be the legacy of KOTOR and how those questions get answered in game. Which means much of what he does is spoiler-riffic so you won't get to hear about most of it before you see it in game. And honestly, you're going to want to be surprised.
Wish it was a book about HK-47.

Just going to milk every drop they can, typical company, it's not about the fan base but the $$'s they can get in to cover their butts for late release. clever buggers!!

Why do we need a book when The Old Republic is already a story driven mmo ? God my head hurts.....
It's interesting, I wonder if everyone who's whining and complaining about a Star Wars book here will do the same when they're being told that ANet does exactly the same, with 3 books being released and put on their GW2 site as a news item - and also posted on sites like mmorpg.com and others - and if they'll complain about ANet doing that. Or will they then say 'oh, but that's totally different' ...
Anyway, the idea is that (a number of) people like reading novels about the games and franchises they care about. Not everyone does, or lol, not everyone even reads books anymore, I'm willing to bet that there can be enough people found on this site who don't, but there are enough people who do.

After all the info we got, always nice to see another book. Good to read while we wait.
IMHO this gives them two thigns..one is of course always money. That one is obvious though
The second one gives awareness to people of star wars. It basically moves it from the archives of your mind to the forefront so your thinking about it again. Following it. Wanting to buy it.
Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.
Is ToR going to be good? Dude it's Bioware making a freaking star wars game, all signs point to awesome. -G4tv MMo report.
Tbh, I am not really liking this. For me... *I* am Revan. I mean, it was who the player was in KOTOR I. Writing about "my" andventures while I wasn't there sounds... wrong. I'd prefer if we did not hear or see of Revan anything but some vague rumors. Just my 5 cts.
I'd love to read a SWTOR era book. But rather some unfamiliar character and not Revan or anyone I played, like the Exile.

I can not wait to read this, sure it might be more story ontop of a story driven MMO ut at least we dont have to pay a subscription to read this part of the story when we want
