I realize this game has some crazy lag issues without top notch computer equipment... So this is what I have:

OS:  Windows Vista

Processor:  AMD AThlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4400+

Memory:  a ton....

Storage:  A Ton

Video:  (this is the biggest one I am worried about)  ZOTAC nVidea GeForce 9600G, 512 VRAM

Internet:  Fastest U-Verse package

Also, I know this game has its "recommended minimal settings" but what would y'all suggest me set it as?

Yeah, you'll definitely have to crank down the settings. My almost-top-notch computer can't handle full graphics.

I hate that... FFXI was almost the same way when it was released.  SE should learn by now that everyone isnt rich and we all dont live inside Microsoft Headquarters.

This same question has been asked and answered in just about every single new mmo since the internet was born.  If you have an average machine you get to use average settings.  Just ignore the high settings.

I don't understand this attitude. This is what all those scary sliders in graphical options are for.

The graphics are that high because it makes them 'future proof'.  In 3 years when the current crazy graphics card is 50$, you'll still be able to enjoy the game because you can crank up the graphics and itll still look on par with other newly released games.

Its like having a current MMO and future MMO in one :P

Take a look at some FFXI screenshots and you'll think 'wow, that looks really nice'.  You'd never guess its 7 year old game.

I have dual 5870s (game has no Crossfire support), 8 gb of RAM, and an AMD Phenom 1090T @3.2GHz, and I can't even run it at max settings and get a framerate that's playable for long periods.

I have AA turned off, general drawing quality and background quality set to standard (boosts my FPS by about 30 when I moved it down from the max setting), shadow detail at standard, ambient occlusion turned off, depth of field on, all all texture quality set to max.  Generally get around 40 FPS in towns and 60 in the fields except for when I'm around foliage which, for some reason, drops me back down to around 40 FPS.

Horribly optimized game.  Don't understand why it's so difficult for MMORPG developers to actually optimize performance as the last major release to have relatively few technical issues was AION back in 2007.

OTOH I have a machine that is 2 years old and without any fiddling I could run just fine, in beta, with the preset settings.

What is "just fine?" What are your specs? Do you overclock?  What are the preset settings? Wouldn't you say the conflicting performance reports prove the game is unoptimized?
