Rift: Scott Hartsman Talks v1.1

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Trion Worlds developers recently deployed the Rift v1.1 patch which contained the River of Souls event. MMORPG.com Industry Relations Manager Garrett Fuller had the opportunity to chat with Executive Producer Scott Hartsman about v1.1 and the lessons learned during the somewhat difficult moments during the River of Souls event. Check it out and then weigh in with your comments.

Scott began by talking about the world event RIFT recently held called River of Souls. The event did not go as smoothly as planned and RIFT took some criticism from players. Scott explained that they found out players valued participation in an event rather than all logging in at the same time. If the event ran over a certain period of time it gave players more opportunity to take part. The event had a set time which the team realized could cause issues and afterwards learned the lesson about running events to be able to include all players over a period of time rather than all at the same time. Scott said that the team continues to work on the upcoming events with this lesson in mind.

The guy is an excellent BSer... this game is WoW without arena and a diverse race selection. Level grind, crafting grind, dungeon grind, heroic grind, battleground grind, raid grind. Rinse and repeat with the occasional new content.

Gameplay is slow paced. Makes the redundant grind become very boring very quickly.

If you were like me and quit WoW to play... WoW lite... don't bother.

Not my cup of tea. It's 2011 and the MMO community is still doing the samething we were doing a decade ago but with upgraded graphics.

valid points.  It's a themepark progression game.  I find the experts more challenging and fun than WoW, but that's up to the individual to form their opinion on that.

The same here.  Scott Hartsman is the man and Trion is a great company.  I have greatly enjoyed my time with Rift.

Truth is, MMO community is doing the same thing it has been since EQ1 dude.  And AO, AC, AC2, and so and so forth.  Call this game WoW lite if you want.  I call WoW AC/DAoC/EQ/AO lite.  Cause by your meaning thats what WoW is.

Anyways I think the game is doing great.  Was pretty pissed about how the world even was released, and panned out, but I think we still have some great features, and content on the horizon.  Cannot wait for the next world Event.

I like Scott, but in all fairness, he was pretty passionate when he was the Lead on Everquest 2 too and that title still languishes as a bloated mess with problems that will never be addressed. Scott changes his mind in response to whatever criticism might threaten Rift's bottom line. This would help explain why Rift's developers have lacked a sense of where the game is going. Rift suffers from identity crisis and Scott's letting the winds of player favor blow the game wherever they will is a big downfall.

Trion doesn't listen to its customers, it just reacts to them. There's a difference.

"People love groups. Its a fallacy that people want to play solo all the time." - Scott Hartsman, Executive Producer, Rift

Yes that is what it sure looks like,  reaction to its player base.  So they have no clear direction, you could tell that by what started happening during beta.  All I can say is I was not surprised by the nerfs to the warrior class considering how many folks were saying how op they were.

Oh well watch another game that turns right to left one day after another.

RIFT is an ok game - It has issues and sadly those issues are not worked on right now.  In fact - Trion is not just ignoring ppl that are talking about population imbalance - low populated servers and server merges...

they make sure to lock them on their main forums as well.

Low populated servers already? Did they open too many at launch?

Cross server LFG will kill this game as it's starting to WoW. It's no fun playing with people you don't care about or will ever see again. I'll take a longer queue for same server LFG thanks.

I couldnt agree more. I have to ask though, what have you quit rift to go play?

  • HowryHowry Member UncommonPosts: 116

Always seems like all the servers are at medium to high capacity.  I havent seen any underpopulated ones.

  • gatherisgatheris Member UncommonPosts: 1,016

    i love this game

maybe it is because i did not play WOW beyond its first three months since from what i have read those who left WOW to play Rift don't seem to be impressed

the important thing is i'm having fun - so all the arguments on either side mean nothing to me

looking forward to what Trion comes up with for this game

You know, I didn't know Scott was involved with EQ2... but I'm right there with you on the "all over the place" nature of EQ2. I've thought for a while that EQ2 has an identity crisis. SOE can't seem to not keep screwing with it... always trying to change it to follow the latest trends.

I'm noticing that in a lot of MMOs these days.

Will be sad if Rift goes through the same thing.

This is exactly what has ruined it for me, no I'm not talking about RIFT, I'm talking about forums. Quit putting in your 2 cents telling people to not play a game, it's not needed. Just state your reasons and move on. Man oh man what I would give to go back to the days when forums were actually useful and debates were actually meaningful and something came out of it. Anyways, someone will quote me so I will end here. It's just sad, really sad .........

    1) They are not looking to do cross server dungeons, just single server dungeons.  Research please.

    2) The servers even during week day off prime time still all maintain a medium population health.

    3) If you seriously use the world grind when referring to Rift OR Wow then you must be delusional.  Neither of those games are grinds.  WoW has the fastest leveling progression I have ever heard of and Rift isn't far behind.  You people using the word grind to describe either of these games need to go back in time and play old school EQ or DAoC, you don't know what grind is.

So true. Quite remarkable that the genre has not evolved for the past 5 years. Exept as you say, better GFX and effects. Other than that its WoW clone after WoW clone and it is left to under-funded indy companies to try and innovate.

People doesn't complain how hard a grind it is, they complain because it is the same grind all over again.

sorry for the clumsy quote, hate the way these forums behave, but...

    100% agree.

It is disappointing and disheartening but what did we expect? A great effort for a decent MMO that is worth the money of the box for a free month and maybe another or two of fun.

No long term MMO solution. But we all knew this after AOC, WAR, AION and many other AAA*+ titles that ended up being AA titles on release.

I can't help it but wonder why the MMO genre is feeling a little crippled at the moment.

i realy disagree with you here m8, are you still playing Rift?.....i logged in yesterday and ALL servers where medium to high population.

    server merges are not even needed right now......i find groups for questing in low populated zones within 15 minutes......s{mod edit}

Have many alts only up to 30, but up to that level nothing you said hold.

Game is very fun, enough fast paced (far, fortunately, from CO crazyness), far from boring, does not feel at all like wow except for interface (have not problem with that if they adopted most developed interface), there is no grinding at least doing quests I never ever had feeling that I'm grinding anything, ... but for sure one must READ quests.

Great game, close second after wow for me. So far and just being out for short. Btw, im close to 50 so I played and tried many. For me wow is king of mmorpg in any sense (taking in account I never pvp so would not know from that perspective) but also in general.
