The military is the only legitimate "hardcore" experience around, gamers identifying themselves as such is just a joke.

That said, any game can be taken to an excessive level of enthusiasm, it depends on your level of involvement.

I always give my props to the military....but the OP did ask about "hardcore games"...not hardcore life...so....

I would consider EVE, Xsyon, Darkfall, and Mortal Online to be hardcore games.

Death means something in those games and advancement can be a bit of a chore.  Levels aren't earned every 10 minutes and not much can be accomplished in a 30 minute gaming session.

I'd probably toss in EQ1 (new servers) and Lineage 2 as well, still lots of long term action to be found in them.

I play Eve myself, but seeing people use the term "hardcore" in conjunction with a computer game makes me laugh so hard I almost piss myself.   Sheesh, how the pre-pubescents like to glamorise their dinky little online games...

    Geez people.

Let's put things in perspective a bit.

Nobody is trying to compare games to real life here.

Certain things in games can be considered difficult....for games.  Death in games can suck, battles can be hard, travel can be tiring, earning rewards can be difficult.  But to compare any of these things to their counterpart in RL is just plain silly.

I have a RL job that fits most peoples description of "hardcore"...but that's not the point here and I can see that.  Can't you?

So please stop comparing anything in RL to a game.  That's not the point of this discussion.

If you're looking for difficulty Haven and Hearth could give you some trouble if you want to live "really well".

Well now it depends on what you look at as hardcore.  You mean raiding?  WoW and EQ2.  Crafting, EQ2 and several others.  All hardcore means is that you play a lot.  Does not mean that the game itself is hardcore.

So for raiding yeah WoW and EQ2 if that is what your looking for and heroic dungeons.  EQ2 would be my choice if you would like a wide variety of hardcore questing, crafting, dungeons, and raids.  Cataclysm is very short on quests unless you don't mind doing the same dailies over and over for months or weeks.  For high level people that is.  However they changed all of the old quests in the beginning areas on WoW from levels 1-60.

Vanguard was pretty hardcore in its time.

Today Vanguard europe server is totally hardcore. Try playing a game designed for group with a lonely player ...

(If you want to try, I would recommend going for Dread Knight, Necromancer, or Disciple. Those classes are insane at soloing if you play them right)

OP needs to be more specific. Hardcore can mean:

    • Progress comes slowly, you need to play for a very long time to make progress

    • Failure/death comes with a substantial penalty

    • Failure/death is frequent for all but the most skilled

Which of those are you looking for?

EVE and Darkfall are the only two current succesful games that are hardcore (challenging). Mortal, Earthrise, Xyson would be less succesful hardcore games.

    Shadowbane was my hardcore standard.

fairly quick advancement, an excessive amount of pvp, and consequences to building your tree of life, and then having it torn down.

    Top notch game.

    Vanguard is my 2nd choice.

the rest pale in comparison, to the game play of shadowbane, and the beauty of vanguard.

I miss Shadowbane in its prime. Especially when all of the North American players had to band together to fight off the Chinese zerg. Epic.

There is no such thing as a hardcore game..........games are anything but hardcore.........just b/c you lose your internet spaceship doesnt mean your hardcore. Please stop with this nonsence.

    Playing: PO, EVE
    Waiting for: WoD
Favourite MMOs: VG, EVE, FE and DDO
Any person who expresses rage and loathing for an MMO is preposterous. He or she is like a person who has put on full armor and attacked a hot fudge sundae.

There is no such thing as a hardcore bear fighter...............bear fights are anything but harcore.......just b/c you lose your arm in a bear fight doesnt mean your hardcore. Please stop with this nonsence

Im sorry but the above statement would be considered wrong by many people.......however most of the population would never say gamers are hardcore.........we are slugs who sit at our computer and collect purple pixels so we can collect more purple pixels......i would say mmo'ers are the least harcore people in the world.

    EQ2

    EQ

    WoW

    SWG

    UO

    DAOC

All of them have been dumbed down over the years.

Only one that stayed truely hardcore is EVE.
