What do you want in an MMO?

I am a Game Design student nearing my final project.  My goal is to make an MMO.  I want to know what you Like/Dislike about current mmo's and what you would like to see in one.  I am mostly looking for things about Features, user interface, etc.  Not graphics, story, and such.

Also, what MMO's are you playing and why do you like it?

I appreciate any help you guys can offer.

I played darkages for about 2 years and what really got me hooked to that game (still hooked, just cant pay) is the huge range of options in community. They had a marriage option, with a whole bunch of side things; they had an amazing religion-system, complete with high priests, priests, acolytes, and a bunch of other levels. Also, they had a player-run politics system, but of course, one player didnt run it by himself. They'd have guards, judges, demagogues, burgesses, etc.
Another thing i liked is you dont gain exp soley from hunting. You'd get it from praying, attending mass at church, doing a quest (and there's a crapload of quests), or just talking to NPCs.
So, keep some of those options in mind and don't just make it hunting and fighting other players. Give it character.

The biggest thing ive ever wanted to see in a game in an actual Building system. I mean shadowbane and others have pretty half-assed versions of building, but i mean what ive always wanted to see is something that requires you to place the boards, buy the cement and mix with water + placing it, etc, not just buy the icon that looks like  a building, point and click and theres a building.

that would be insane, if connected with PvP

I've been playing There for a year now. The best part is it has no story and your free to do what you like. You can host events, race, explore, play paint ball, build, and more. Its what any game should be based upon. I've never seen any game as good as There.

    There

The only limitation in There is your own imagination!

A problem with There is that a majority of the people wouldnt wanna play a game that doesnt really have combat or anything. Personally, its a bit too much like real life for my tastes.

    PvP (rank system)

    Player created citys (like Shadowbane)

Seiging (guild vs guild/nation vs nation)

Quests (wide range of content through out all levels)

    Craftable items (trades skills)

    Guild system

    Ultima Online:

    1. Open PvP (I like the option to fight where ever / whenever I want too)

    2. full looting (makes you think twice about what you want to fight in)

    3. Skill-based ... most mmo's today dont require "skill" to some extent... most are who has better equipment or higher level

    4. Veterean Rewards (rewarded with items that dont really mess with combat but are useful / mean something)

    5. Mounts, (I believe this is the only game where you can PvP while mounted)

    World of Warcraft:

    1. Questing (I like other options to build my char up and the questing in WoW is one of the better systems I have seen)

    Dark Age of Camelot:

    1. RvR Combat (this is by far the best restricted PvP I have seen)

         a. you can PvP for points

         b. you can capture castles and towers

         c. you can use seige weapons

    Horizons:

    1. Crafting (some of the best crafting I have seen in any game)

    EVE Online:

    1. out of game gains (I thought this was an interesting feature, its more suited for casual than hardcore though)

Those are some of the things that I liked in games...
