Anyways, I've been playing Planetside for almost 2 years now and thought it would be fun to see some new faces. Anyways, Planetside is a massive, online, persistent, first person shooter. It has character development and the such and a lot of great people. We could also use some fresh faces, so I thought I'd post some info started by one of the players.

Planetside is a boring and unimaginative game with some of the worst playerbase I have ever experienced in an online game.   The maturity level, whining, lack of skill with the Planetside playerbase is reason enough to avoid this game.

SOE puts almost no support into Planetside and the game is barely worth playing if it were free.  A far better gaming experience can be obtained in a free FPS such as BF1942, America's Army, etc.

    Avoid Planetside.

Who's a Mister Crankypants?  Are we a Mister Crankypants today?

Maybe if you could go in to a little more detail about what you mean by the game has "turned a corner" in the last few months.  Have there been some changes we should know about?  I don't really follow planetside, so I'm genuinley curious.

I don't want to write this, and you don't want to read it. But now it's too late for both of us.

Planetside is definately one of te most fun and amazing games I have ever played. I finally got bored with it after 2 years of constand play but I always get the urge to come back, which I vowed I never would do. People, give this game a chance. It's definately one of the most innovative, exciting games ever made.

Planetside was the only game i've ever loved :( Shame the dev's ruined it with the CoreCombat exapnsion and removing the gloew from the Vanu knife!

Never went back after Bfr's came in

It seems to me that SOE is really pulling the corner.  I have the "station Pass"  and every game I log into, I see more new players giving the game a shot.  Especially in SWG and EQ2.  Although I have not noticed a bunch of new playing in Planetside, I am sure they are out there.

Planetside is a wonderful game if you like huge battles.  Take BF1942, put it in the future, and have maybe 50-100 players on each team.

    Thats Planetside.

    See you all online image

Let me go ahead and address a couple things.

I think what ReconDelta is complaining about is BFRs (I'm assuming this is the same ReconDelta who is either still playing the game or paying the subscription to use the forums as a chatroom :)

BFRs are Mech type vehicles that were introduced into a contemporary (slight variations to give it a futuristic feel) war game. At first, the Mech's were severly overpowered and couldn't be killed and as such, there was an overproliferation of them. At this time, many of the original players got fed up with BFRs and left (although they all get the twitch to come back). It has been several months later, and balance patches have actually integrated BFRs and the CoreCombat weapons into the game so that, while they are harder to kill in general, they are not really more powerful than most of the other vehicles. The playerbase has developed strategies that are pretty effective at killing them. If I remember, Recon was a BFR pilot and didn't appreciate his god machine being *nerfed* to the point it is.

Other than BFRs, the game is fairly entertaining. There are aircraft/tanks/assault buggies and other vehicles that interact with infantry both in normal armor (agile) and heavy armor (reinforced exo). The infantry also have anti vehicle weaponry that when used together can get rid of pretty much anyvhicle more than 20 meters away (closer than that, the vehicle will normally win).

As for performance, I'm not going to lie to you, the game is fairly demanding. At a minimum, I would suggest a 1.5 gig P4 (equivalant) or better, at least 512 megs of ram, and at least a 32 meg video card. However, to put it into perspective, I get 140 fps in the open and 50+ in huge battles with 100s of characters around. My setup is a Athlon 64 3000+, 1024 megs of ram, X800 XL video card, so it's not like nothing will make the game run decent. Additionally, to accomodate those with less ram, the developers have released lower quality sound (8 bit sound) which will significantly require less ram.

The link above I gave you is a free 7 day trial. Try it, you'll probably love it if you enjoy FPS or strategy games.

There are several roles, you can be what we call a killwhore or you can play support. Support right now won't advance you as quickly, however, the developers will release a patch, probably in the next month, that will significantly reward support players (those who repair/heal) so as to correct the discrepency.

View some of those videos, a player named MarcoPolo made them in game. Should be fun, tell me if you have any other questions.

ReconDelta is just a whiner by nature. He whines about PS here, there and everywhere. He actually loves the game, he must, he can't seem to let it go. :)
Planetside is not perfect, but it is a far cry better than any other MMORPG on the market today. And someone else mentioned that PS has turned a corner...hmmm...I don't think it ever had a corner it needed to turn IMHO. Just like any of these online persistent worlds, they change and grow. Planetside is evolving - what it will evolve into is anyones guess. I have seen it become less of a CS/UT frag type game and become more of a tactical/stratigical fps game. Command and Control has been greatly improved - but it still needs a lot of work. There is one thing for certain, SOE has learned a lot about how to make a better Planetside over the last couple of years and I suspect that in the not so distsant future we'll see a press release for Planetside 2. :D

I am more into realism like BF1942, Call of Duty, Medal of Honor. Basically a FPS with real guns and bullets, not plasma blasts. I can't really stand Halo Online or Unreal Tournament.

    I haven't played Planetside for 2 reasons.

1.) The fact it looks like Unreal Tournament and Online Halo

2.) Someone said all combat is non-vehicular and enclosed. Another FPS style I hate is inside buildings with short narrow halls and tunnels.

Am I wrong about my assumptions?

LOL!  Yes Laserwolf...you are wrong!  Hehehe..so worng.  Here let me enlighten you.  Watch these two videos from start to finish.  They depict just a small skirmish between a TR force and NC force.

This is the Battle for Bitol that took place on Hossin.

This game is not CS and it is not Halo - not even close.

The only reason Planetside is worth a subscription fee over another free FPS would be the vehicle factor.  Unfortunately for PS the playerbase is rather immature and unskilled.   So unless a single grunt can easily destroy any vehicle outdoors the grunts whine.

The SOE developers in a feable attempt to keep the few remaining subscriptions cave in and endlessly nerf vehicles.   Planetside has horrible graphics in comparison to other free FPS's.   Lacks the strategy of team games like CS and America's Army.   Lacks the skill involved with fast paced frag fest games like Unreal and Quake.

Planetside is like drinking root beer and being told since the liquid has beer in the name you should be getting a buzz.   Planetside fails as an MMO, FPS, and as an entertaining game for more than a brief period of time.

Planetside does have a few remaining hardcore players who will try to convince you otherwise, but there are still people using C-64's who say they never need to upgrade their computer.

    Avoid Planetside.

Awww...what is wrong Recon, nobody likes you any more over at the PS official forums?  ::pouts::  No wonder...all you did was whine, whine, whine.  Biggest baby in the gaming world I swear.

Typical Planetside imbecile.   I don't post on the official forums due to the fact the developers censor anyone disagreeing with their endless nerfs.

Anyone wanting proof, take a look at the official Planetside forums and witness the idiots in their own domain.  Do so before spending any money on Planetside.

Nah...you earned that title long before I did Recon.  :)  Besides, I suppose  if I keep you bottled up here responding to me - it'll keep others safe from you.  :p

As for Recon... I don't know, I find it amazing that you find Planetside threads in the most random places to try to destroy. Planetside is designed to be fun, not realistic, otherwise everyone would die in the first shot to the face, but then it would be like playing a Rainbow Six or something, fun at first, but could become very frustrating in a short period of time.

As for the nerfs to BFRs, they were the first and only vehicle to have a regenerating shield, in their original design, they unbalanced the game and no one would have played outside of them had the corrections not been implemented. I realized you lived in them, but really, people do enjoy fighting outdoors and that would not be possible if BFRs were not changed.

Anyways everyone, it's a free download/7 day trial. Play it, see if you like it. If you don't, you can join the ReconDelta fanclub :)

That's simply amazing... Till the bitter end.

I registered after reading how certain PS fanboys were organizing to artificially inflate the Planetside ratings on this webpage in order to dupe people into paying for your failure of a game.

If you idiots want more players stop whining and destroying an otherwise enjoyable game.  Actually too late for that, my recommendation is to grab a lifeboat and jump ship.   Planetside is about to sink fast, a huge iceberg called BF1942/2 is dead ahead.

If I repeat posts, sorry, my last post isn't showing.

Anyways, as far as I know, there is no organized effort to invade mmorpg. Additionally, I'm almost certain there is no plot ot artificially inflate planetside ratings.

In my opinion, Planetside is a very fun game and I simply wanted to provide people with a free way to try it out and see if they like the game. Recon, why would you deny them the opportunity to form their own opinion? If you can't enjoy PS you're going to make sure no one else does either?

Although I will agree that PS had it's degree of fun, I was also quite turned off by the seemingly very low maturity level of the community. I do want to say that this was solely my experience and perhaps many other's would get something different but from what I saw it was quite difficult to get into if you don't know many people and or if you are a newbie to the genre.

Even though I am not a big FPS fan I wanted to try it out, I did enjoy the gameplay however but as I said earlier, the childlike behavior from what seemed like nearly everyone I ran accross was more then enough to convince not to continue playing.

I can understand the OP's need for new players now though, with an existing community as it is, it must be difficult to get new players excited and pumped about the game.

Planetside really shines in a guild situation - get 5-10 players onto TS/Vent with coordinated tactics and it is immense fun. There is nothing like it, not even in a regular FPS where you are only one squad in amongst 100+ players defending a base against enemy ground, air and troop assault.

For the record, I was playing Planetside while the BFR's were introduced, and then subsequently nerfed. They're still death machines, but eminently more dealable with. Plus, they're massive and play no part of the game once you are inside a base.

Give it a go - it is actually worth it!

Yes, sometimes you can have 300+ people fighting at 1 base, quite hectic, but a lot of fun. Usually you will only have 100-200 people at a base though. These are big battles. Also there are places you can have small encounters between 10-50 people so there's a little for everyone, definately worth a try.

Hectic is not how I would describe the endless 3 way battles so common in Planetside.   Most players would agree the 300 person battles are lagfests with no strategy involved.   Simply zerg and be zerged while trying not to lag out and get booted back to sanctuary where you're unable to rejoin the battle.

I'm also on a high end PC with broadband.  Don't believe me, read one of the many posts on the official forums regarding performance issues.   Planetside actually runs slower on higher end PCs.
