Guild Wars 2: Environment Art

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

The Arena.Net team has updated the Guild Wars 2 blog with a new post by Environment Artist Peter Fries. Previously working on Factions, Nightfall and Eye of the North, Fries brings a lot of experience creating the lands and cities our characters roam around in. In this piece, Fries talks about what exactly it is that environment is and how the artists create the look of the Guild Wars 2 universe.

The list of considerations that an environment artist has is very long. Building a game environment involves technical concerns, like the impact of polygon density on display frame rates, collision mistakes that unintentionally trap players, and the idea that even the darkest place needs to look good in variable lighting. Our amazing internal technology and tool developers continually deepen the parameters available, from the motion of particle fields to perturbation patterns in the surfaces of water bodies. As the technology of the game improves, prop and map artists are constantly revisiting older assets to improve those as well.

I can think of no greater challenge our environment artists have than trying to live up to the vision of the studio’s amazing concept art team. Imagine being expected to actually build the incredible things that our art director Daniel Dociu comes up with, while he stands right behind you watching. Daniel doesn’t want to hear about your technical limitations, he wants to know why stray sprigs of grass aren’t breaking up the harsh line where a building’s façade meets the ground, or why rust hasn’t stained the masonry underneath that downspout. You know you’re in for it when Daniel starts furiously sketching on a stray napkin from your desk to illustrate his point!

The 2009 to 2011 transition is impressive, and I am looking forward to seeing what the Sylvari look like after their redesign.

If you think all they have is art... well I assure you, you are sorely mistaken.

    This is not a game.

We got an in-depth look at 3 of the 5 races.

We have hours of gameplay videos.

We have information on the gear and dye system.

We have information on the dungeons, the dynamic event system and the personal storylines.

6 of the 8 classes have been revealed.

We have been given information on mini-games and other filler content.

    We have information on crafting.

We have the basic information on both types of PvP.

You know what? I agree with you. This game is so awesome it can't be considered anything but art. image

Towns and forts were blocked out with grey box shapes that were gradually replaced with more complex architecture. Streets were dressed with lampposts and strings of flags flapping in the wind. Homes were decorated with furniture and draped with tapestries. Shop shelves and market stalls filled with wares. Fires began to crackle in hearths and smoke started billowing from chimneys. Moss appeared on roof shingles and confetti appeared to dance above street carnivals. Housecats began to prowl around backyard gardens full of melons and potatoes as pigeon flocks took to the air in swirling columns. Fields sprouted swaying grass and flowers, waves began to lap at shorelines, and layers of cloud condensed overhead.

All these details are what is so impressive. I hope the other environments are as good as Queensdale. Daniel Dociu: Make my vision come alive! I can imagine it... lol.

If you want to believe that you can. I'm just saying the game looks great and I consider it to be a piece of art.

"A series of broken stone columns turns out to be a jumping puzzle to reach a hidden cave mouth overgrown with vines. The caved-in floor of a ruined fort drops you down several stories into a flooded subbasement haunted by the cursed ghosts of pirates. A hatch in the basement of a farmhouse conceals a tunnel to the cavern hideout of a bandit gang."

Quit teasing me Arenanet, I just want to explore.

I actually agree with the guy that said so far all we've seen is art and superficial gameplay with skills and the like. They should really consider putting out more real information about the actual game and everything to do with it than just art.

You mean other than the countless gameplay videos available on the internet and a wiki that will most likely turn results for everything you have concerns for? The info has been overwhelming ever since the new year started, if you actually look at the other upcoming MMOs, it's the one we know the most for and you can't really blame ANet for providing superb art, can you?

Not too long ago we had an in-depth blog post about crafting and shortly after that, came PAX and a ton of youtube vids. So you should understand why a lot of us will fail to agree with you. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if they revealed something major tomorrow (today in the UK).

i have more than a thousand screenies of the original GW1 because of all of its beautiful locations, especially those unexplored niches

one of the best times ive had while filling up my HoM was doing the explorer title, going to places in Tyria ive never seen in spite of owning the game for 4 years then

hearing this makes my heart jump with anticipation

that, and the little bit of tease about a hidden cave mouth overgrown with vines and a hatch that conceals a bandit gang hideout, ups my hype for this game

I tell you this, if this MMO for some reason turns out to be a flop or failure, the MMO genre might as well cease to exist and the legion of hype supporters drown in their own tears...
