I've tried to get into this game a few times but I get stuck on not knowing where to lvl up and missions look incredibly joyless. Are there any guides on places to grind or party?

For free players, you do standard missions, do Daily Missions (bigger XP boosts and more variety of tasks) run dungeons (Subway, ToTW, Foremans, CoH, etc) or just kill stuff in the wild. A few kite spots, mostly involving cyborgs and an NT. With expansions, most power leveling is done on OST/Kite Heckler teams. Doesn't teach you beans about the game, but if you want to get to 220 in a month or two and move on to the next game, that would be the route.
