A contest to beta test a game to make it better so a for profit gaming company can make more money.
Lol, what will they think of next.

Judging from what I understand about the company, "more" is hardly justifiable in that sentence. But to be fair either way, their contest idea is hardly a new one for a company testing a game.

Beta testing is supposed to uncover issues a game may have, so they can be corrected prior to retail release, thus making the game more successful, which would generate more income.
I find it amusing that anyone would consider it a contest, to compete for this privilege.
It makes as much sense as buying clothing, shirts in particular, which advertise a name brand. It's the company whose logo you would be advertising, that should be paying you to wear it.

Go Roma Victor! This is one sweet game, good luck to the devs for trying to make a game that isn't a clone of all that has gone before. Users of this site have been crying out for something new and different - well RV is certainly that.
Give them your support, as a small indie that have listened & reacted to their own community's feedback and suggestions - they DESERVE your support.

I disagree with the first part... mainly because on a site like this you are likely to draw from a pool of people genuinely interested in the betterment of the game... as opposed to accepting random applications from who knows who...
I strongly agree with the second part!
People who pay a premium for shoes, shirts, pants that dont fit them etc just to pay extra for the priveledge of promoting the name of a multi million dollar company
In every other walk of life companies pay for advertising... on clothing... people pay them... insanity!

Hey, don't forget, on more expensive clothing, they've weaved in more "mo-betta" fibers, so the shirt then becomes "mo-betta". You're paying for the fibers, man. THE FIBERS!
Only fibres I pay for can be packed in a pipe and incinerated

I wasn't debating the validity of a contest for beta. It is, quite openly I think, for publicity. What I was saying is simply that RedBedlam has made near to no money thus far (even in terms of money provided by a publisher... as they are not under that pressure from what I understand).
In addition, like you recognize yourself, the contest is not a particularly novel idea. It is tried-and-true: your t-shirt example proves it. It works, it's true. It is publicity.
Don't mistake me for arguing for (or really against) the validity of a contest for a beta testing. I'm not entirely sure I agree with it either, but to be fair, it is their company and they have been rather responsive to their community. We can hardly fault them for garnering a little publicity through the beta, particularly when it is in their "commercial beta" stage and not a typical closed beta.

I think it's a good sign that the game will be out soon (1-2 months), as they said that they wouldn't start the publicity push until near the end of development.
Really, there's nothing wrong with getting a little publicity for the game. Sure they haven't done it til now, but it appears that they've moved on to another stage of the game, as it were.
