Friend wants me to come back- is it worth it?

LumaLuma Member UncommonPosts: 34

Hi I have a friend that wants me to come back to Play FFXI and want see if I can get some questions answered to see if its worth coming back. First a little history; When I first played FFXI it was on the free month only and mainly soloed the city missions and some quests, so really did not play much of the game But here are my questions:

1. Is there their an easy to understand compass system so you can find your way around(this also can apply to finding the area were my quest is located at)?

2. Is it easier to find quest NPCs(when I played it seemed you had to check on random NPCs tp find a quest-thats one reason i stuck to missions)

3. Can you easily find groups in the "search for members list", Are you often picked up for a group if you are in LFG mode, and how fast does "autoparty" work

4. Can quests/missions be done with a two to three man group or do you need a full group to get most quest/mission done?

5. Can you mainly level up on quests or are there periods you have to do a random monster hunt?

Well, it's been more than a year since I last played, but I'll answer as best I can. It probably shouldn't have changed to much.

1.) I don't know what you mean by a compass system...do you mean the map? You can get around pretty easy by following the maps, and can by maps for most the 20 and down areas in each starting town.

2.) Unfourtnetly, the only way to tell if a NPC has a quest is to talk to him, as they don't have something floating over their head saying they have one. Your best bet would be to go online and see which NPCS give quests in what zone. I can't really tell you much about quests, as the only quest I had done in my 69 levels was the RSE quests, Gobbie bags, and a few faction raising ones. You don't really need quests for rewards to much in this game.

    3) The autopary feature is worthless. No one ever uses it, as you have to have such specific parties in FFXI that a selection of random people wouldn't work. The lfg list can work, though it often takes 1-3 hours to make a group as you need such specific members. How quickly your picked for group when lfg depends on what your class is. A must have class like red mage and bard in the later levels, and white mage in the early, will get picked in 15 min-1 hour. A melee like Dragoon or Monk though, can often seek for hours and get no invites, especially if you haven't gotten some of the better gear.

If you worried about getting groups, I'd suggest Rdm. You have to one later on, and people will deal with alot in a rdm, be it bad gear or poor playing skills. I know I did when I played.

4.) It depends on what quest it is, and what level you are. I duoed-tripled all the missions up to rank 5, doing the rank 5 one at 41 with a 34 and 37 for back up.

5.) You can't level up on quests at all. Most of you time will be spent exping in a group, or in some cases, looking for groups. Depending on your class you might spend as much if not more time farming than you do exping. Maybe 5% at best of your time will be spent on quests/ missions.

Oh, and solo isn't really an option in this game, with the exception of the Beast tamer class, which is still vastly inferior to group exp.

    Well. hoped that helped.

Yes. You have a compass displayed showing your current heading at all times except in battle or when you've called up a menu. You can also call up a map to see your current position and heading (if you have a map for the area you're in--always buy maps, they're generally not hard to get. You start with a set of maps for your home city and newbie area)

    2. Is it easier to find quest NPCs(when I played it seemed you had to check on random NPCs tp find a quest-thats one reason i stuck to missions)

No, you do pretty much have to go along and talk to all the NPC. Or you could research it on the web; the quests are pretty well documented on a number of FFXI websites.

    3. Can you easily find groups in the "search for members list", Are you often picked up for a group if you are in LFG mode, and how fast does "autoparty" work

Actually, no. What you *can* find easily are people who aren't in groups and looking for one. Generally, you put your flag up and let someone forming a party find you (or start forming your own party and start looking for unattached people). How often you are picked for a group depends on how many parties are looking for group and how desirable you look as a member and can vary widely. Autoparty works by matching you up with everybody in your level range in the area who is also looking for group with autoparty set and automatically forming you into a party. It's not used that much.

    4. Can quests/missions be done with a two to three man group or do you need a full group to get most quest/mission done?

Quest/missions vary from easily done by yourself (sometimes by simply walking over the Auction House and buying the desired item) to requiring a full-fledged 18-man alliance to accomplish (Eco-Warrior, anyone?) Unless the mission or quest is level-capped how many people are required depends on what level you are. Level-capped missions/quests do tend to require a full party.

    5. Can you mainly level up on quests or are there periods you have to do a random monster hunt?

No, you can't level up on quests at all. Quests don't provided experience at all (although whatever you kill while doing the quest does, of course). Nor do missions. Quests provide fame, missions provide rank. Both are things you'll need, but they aren't experience and they don't level you up. Some quests also provide necessary stuff--getting your subjob requires that you fulfill a quest, for example. But you're going to be doing a lot of "random monster hunts", oh yes.
