For Advanced Computer Builders/Upgraders/people....HELP!

SerienSerien Member CommonPosts: 8,460

Ok heres the deal, when I forst got my computer, every 10 minutes it crashed, so I reboooted Windows XP, from a different CD, but used my registration key.

When I tried to play a game...It said install all of your video drivers, so I went to do that, come to find out, inside the DXDIAG under display it says manufacturer: n/a etc for all the fields..

When I spoke to a guy form techsupport at Firelite, he said to right cick the desktop, go to settings, click advanced, click adapters, then click drivers, and click update drivers. Unfortunatley inside that tab, THERE IS NO UPDATE DRIVER! all there is is stop device.

Hoping to replace this onboard prosavage8 with 32mb, I went out to cheapguys computer, www.cheapguys.com and bought a SIS315 256-bit 4x VGA, 64mb sdram, for 29.99.

I brought it home, and put it into the agp slot, started windows (said NOTHING about new hardware, all it said was start in normal mode or safe) so anyway I read the manual and began installation

It says *exactly quoted fomr the manual*

Windows 98/ME/2000/XP Installation

Users can install the driver through a serial of dialog boxes.

1. Insert the disc into your CD-ROM drive. Use MY omputer to look at the directory structure as :/VGA/SiS315. Select your winsows directory as :/Win9x for Windows 98/ME/2000. Run Setup.exe

This is where im stumped, what the hell am I supposed to do?

and btw in device manager, i dont have a "display properties" thingy. PLEASE HELP, I JUST SPENT A GRAND AND IT'S TURNING INTO CRAP, PLEASE HELPM ME MAKE IT WAHT IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE!

So do you have the monitor pluged into the new video card?  Does it display at all?  Have you disabled you motherboard's video card?  Tech support can help you with disabeling the motherboard video.  If it does not say no new hardware found let it run to windows in normal mode.  Wait a bit, does a little buble in the lower right hand corner say found new hardware?  Do any of the icons say found new hardware?  If not click on your start menu, then click Control Panel.  Since you have a fresh install it is probably in Catagory View.  On the left in all the blue there should be something that says Switch to Classic View, click that.  Double click the add hardware icon.  Click next and it will search for hardware.  If it finds it then follow the incstructions, if following the instruction does not work try again.  When you get to the installing drivers part look around for a "Have CD" option, put the CD in your drive and tell it to search that drive.

If all else fails, put the CD in drive, go to my computer and double click the correct drive.  You should be able to explore the files manualy and find the correct .exe  There is probably a windows XP folder on the CD with a Setup.exe file inside it.  Run that and see what happens.

Oh the joys of a new computer.

If you just bought this computer, unplug it. Take it back to where you got it from, plop it on their counter and tell them "FIX IT NOW, FOOL!!!  image ". Umm, but nicely. image

If you can't do that because you bought it online or something then get on the phone right away while the warrenty is still valid and have the sellers tech support walk you through fixing it. They don't mind doing that. It's their job after all.

Making a support call or returning a purchase can be intimidating if you're not used to doing it, but sheesh, when you've spent over a grand on something you better exersise your rights! image

Oh, and be leary of tech advice given on forums like this one and others. They may know what they're talking about. Or maybe not. If it's the latter your problem could end up worse than when you started.

    Ok, you might try this:

Click; Start/All programs/Accessories/System  Tools/System Restore. Then use System restore to reset your comp to the way it was when you bought it. Then if needed install the drivers again.

Edit: Make sure to use Windows Update to get  the latest patches and make sure you have DirectX 9.0b

  • squeeesqueee Member Posts: 722
Don't ever use System Restore first off, it is a waste of time and disk space.  I would just disable it if I were you; you can right click on My Computer and do that.  Just explore the driver CD, it can't be that hard, your drivers are on there somewhere.  And all of the windows updates should keep you busy for oh I'd say an hour, if not more.

When the computer was brought home it was crashing every ten minutes. Making sure all the drivers and updates are in place might be enough to fix that. Frequent crashes can also be caused by an inadaquite power supply. Less than 300 watts is just asking for trouble. 400 watts or more is prefered.

His real problems started when he reinstalled WinXP from a different disk, but used the original regestry key. Using System Restore will reset the computer to the way it was before he borked it with the new disk/old key.

I would say first off be very careful with graphics card.

A lot of the unknown cards work horribly with wind xp,have very little updated drivers and some games will just not even bother to play them.

That 50 dollars would have been better spent buying an older known brand like geforce2.

Stick with ATI and ndvidia cards honestly.

Even 1 year ago i would not even go near a ATI card simply because the drivers were rarely updated and many games hated them but they are very good now.

From what it seems it all points to the card .If you have a friend ask him to let you test your cpu with a ndvidia or ATI card and see.
