I don't think you could hardly call FoMk a RPG. I mean it really bares no similarity to any RPG I've ever played (save a live action RPG my neighbor used to play with his friends growing up, but that was more playing swords and beside the point).
There are no elements to it that lend it to being an RPG. There is no character building, no clearly definded roles to be played. I suppose if you wanted to RP your arrest attempt as an LED if you really wanted, but by the time you got the dialogue out of your mouth you'd be dead already. MMO world has strached the definition of RPG to the limit there is very little RP in most of them unless you join a RP specific guild. I think that the only thing that ties these games to their pen & paper heritage is the skill/stat systems they are built out of.
FoMk has tossed that notion to the wind, in favor of an anyone can do anything world. Where the player is responsible for creating the well....everything. Unfortunately, 80% of MMORPGers aren't interested in those last 3 letters (RPG). The only thing that was repressing most of the retards that plagued other games was that they couldn't just log and do what they wanted, they had to advance in the skill systems before they could 'p0wN' someone. FoMk gives them a chance to be l33t from day 1.
The Devs might as well drop the RPG from this MMO and call it what it really is a MMOFPS (and a bad one at that).

er, the fact the game doesn't impose clearly defined roles on the players through game mechanics dosn't mean its not an RPG.
Actually the opposite, the game provides total freedom to RP. Although it remains to be seen if the retail community will be mature enough to make this work. Maybe not.
Strictly speaking though, FoM is the purest form of RPG where the player and not the game, decides how one RP's
I disagree entirely. By that definition of 'pure' RPG, any game without clearly defined parameters and a chat system becomes an RPG. An RPG like most any other game require rules. These rules are usually enforced via game systems in an MMORPG, unfortanately FoMK lacks any set of rules that could create an RP environment, instead its ruleset (or lack there of) is more consistent with an FPS in Team Deathmatch mode
well... isnt a RPG a game ho lets the player take on eny role he wants?
let them do wat thay want no mater wat? bla bla bla-...
i know its more demanding on the players, but isnt it the point in a rpg?
I WANT A SCI-FI MMO!! (NOT EVE, or Fom, or FE)
It is a very good RPG imho
I started playing AE and because theres no idiots in it, everyone plays a role.
Anyways, once it goes retail, its going to be much better
Nuffsaid
So you're saying that the idiots haven't been attracted by the chance to play the game free in OB and instead will just buy the game and pay a monthly fee when they have no interest in the game at all???
I think not.
However duplex does need to realise that a free-for-all will not be popular and unrestrained PvP is always going to attract a fair number of gankers.

the games where u need to spend 1000 of hours on leveling before u can do any cool shit are the worst games ever.. character creation and development does not rely on strict leveling rules and how many bugs u need to kill before u get 1000 exp or whatever. that is the worst thing in most rp games.. having to spend time on killing npc so u can finally start playing with or against other players.
Also another thing in this game that makes it so good is the skills. while in games like EVE and AO the pvp skills depends on how much time u spent on leveling and filling your diffrent skills.. FOM aslike as jumpgate is more about how good you in person are and not how good your character is.
My cool sig: Turrets suck.
Which is why so many people are criticising it. The EQ and WoW crowd can't cope with the idea of a game they can't be good at simply by having no life and playing 50 hours a week.
I doubt I'll be playing FoMk when it is released because I find it too lawless, but much of the criticism on here is unfounded flaming from the anti-FPS lobby.
Duplex have however stumbled upon something interesting. When you remove levelling from an mmo you basically remove alot of it's point, because if you look at the Game List, the vast majority of the games on there are all about levelling.

Games that require you to level up to insane highs just to do anything cool is stupid in my book. I have played alot of those games and yes, they are fun and I like em but there are people out there who don't necisarily have the time to spend leveling up to be able to do the cool stuff.
You miss a couple of days ingame and your way behind. Atleast with FoM, you can jump in no matter what as the skills come from you, not from a list you get when you level up. While those type of games are cool, I prefer being able to hack/slash/shoot when I feel it is best. I really don't like it when the game does it for you. Feels like an aimbot to me.
No offence to the WoW and similiar players intended but I feel alot more satisfied when I kill a person, not my char.
While I think the concept of FoM is interesting I just can't see it being a good game. I tested the open beta, spawned in my appartment, got out, head for the closest terminal got gunned down by another player. This is before I even had a chance to get any equipment myself.
While the idea of player run game with little rules is good in theory it never works in practice, reson for this is that there can never include a punishment sever enough to discurge unsocial behavior. This game just needs a handfull of grifers to become unplayable.

FoM is an MMOFPS with RP. Unfortunantly, no one in that games knows HOW to rp. Forums filled with flames that remind me of little kids. Ingame is pretty much the same to. Almost all actions I have witnessed are done because of griefers. That whole HAHA YOU GOT PWNED!!! Or the cussing and insults. No, its Red vs Blue. The thing is, it's the players that ruin the game, not the game itself.
It's a good game with good concepts filled with stupidity on the part of most players. My hats off t the kiddies....
