My tribute to Ultima online

deidesdeides Member Posts: 197

Thats right, i play SWG and love it - but i've also come to realize that Ultima onlien is STILL the best game, witht he most content out there.  I played UO for about 3 years, loved every second of it, and quit simply because I played too much - and had to concentrate on my studies.

That said, I see there will be a new expansion coming out soon.  I've looked all over the place for a game that would comapre to UO, the freedom and the feel of it (no classes, please!!! and no levels!! aargh I hate levels) - i couldnt find anything.  The only game that comes close to UO is Star wars galaxies - and i love the gameplay.

I find its a shame the only reason UO isnt as popular anymore is because it lacks a new client (graphics).  I think its a shame too, that EA hasnt taken care of Britannia the way it should have been taken care of.

However, i will be re-activating my ultima online account this week.  I think its a damn shame most MMORPGs out there (if not all) are taking the Everquest approach to gaming (levels, grinding, quest-based gameplay, character classes).  Re-activating my UO account will be my way of voting for a different type of mmo to be developped - one more like Ultima Online .

I totally hear you loud and clear.  I think its a shame that UO, a game that i played for years, still, like he said is the best mmorpg out there.  Alot of people think that UO is still looked up too as "The Great" cause it was the first, which is not the case.  UO is great for its gameplay, its sense of reality, and great players :).  All the new mmorpgs are all about, ohhh look the graphics, 1 million quest to do, which get tiring really fast cause they have no content.  I personally, have played UO, Shadowbane, Lineage 2, WoW, Guild Wars, and back to Shadowbane and UO.  Shadowbane is another great game, Ubi killed the game early in the games stages, but people who still play know that the game is great.  Getting off the subject, I'm looking for a good mmorpg with content.  A good guild system like Shadowbane, player housing is a must, city building maybe, a complex charatcer creation, a game that is actually challenging to me.  If anyone has seen a game of this sort, besides Uo or Shadowbane, please let me know.

EA is the main reason that UO is dead for me.  The graphics do need upgraded, but EA is the problem with the game.

I wish someone would buy the rights to UO and run with it...get EA out of the picture...all they can do is make sport games.

  • UO was a great game.  I picked it up the week it was released and wow, talk about a steep learning curve and some cut-throat players.   You had to REALLY watch your back.  The first time I got PK'd, I was with a group of people in a dungeon.  I strayed away from the pack and approached 2 players, said hi and was promptly e-bolted by one of them.  Live and learn.

Some of my fondest UO memories:

    - Running around hunting mobs in the fields north of Minoc, before player housing exploded and covered the landscape.
    - For a brief time, NPC towers would spawn around the world, full of these red-robed mages.  Taking these guys on with a group of friends was real fun.
    - Raising strength high enough for the first time to wear plate!
    - Hiding in plain sight with the hide skill, but then being able to talk.  You sometimes had a room full of people who were hidden and chatting away.... all you saw was text :)  I think that was one of the most vital skills in the game.
    - Saving up money with some friends and buying a 3 story tower.  I think housing totally rocked and I miss it badly in the current crop of MMORPG's.  I was hoping they would put housing in WoW, but for some reason developers just can't seem to recapture that magic :(

Here is a question for anyone who retired from a game like UO and came back after a long time.  Did it bother you that no-one knew who you were and you didn't know anyone else?  After I retired and turned my account over to a friend, I returned to UO about 2 years later.  The game had changed so much and I didn't know anyone.  I traveled to the spot where my old guild (Dreamwalkers on Chessy) had a small castle and was sad that it wasn't there anymore :(  I had a hard time getting over the fact that many of the things I did in the past (Great Lord vs. Dreadlord fights, etc) were long gone from the game.  I concluded that UO's best place for me was to enjoy the memories and not try to re-live the glory days and thus I cancelled my account for the 2nd and last time.

i kinda like and hete ultima online... it get boring in a while, there no good pvp action around and it's 2D like graphics... in a 3D aspect... that is what i don't like, the good thing i like is that there are a lot of crafting, and you have these different transportation that allow you to carry and help you go place to place... but the bad thing is that it sucks when your pets die and cannot be revive....

    No good pvp??? Hunh???

Yeah i wish EA would sell off UO to another company - EA really looks down on its online department, and especially at Ultima online - granted they do whatj they have to to make more money from UO, but i dont feel a dedication to the game - and thats the main reason UO is not getting any new players.

But i also think it needs a new client - everyone who just started off with mmos are put back by the old graphics - they just have to remember that Ultima online runs on 8... (sic! 9) year old software - its still doing pretty good, but it does need an overhaul.

I dont know, re-opening my account will be my way of voting for a better type of mmorpg.  I'm tired of the carebear EQ-style gameplay with classes, levels and quests (in most games, quests are required to "level up" - geesh)  If only there were a UO2, id be in heaven.

You should be looking at Star War Galaxies. It has what you want. It has a good guild system (you can have enemy guilds and guild wars), player housing (many different types sizes and floorplans to choose from) , city building (with every things from houses, guild halls, to merchant tents, and shuttle ports) , complexl character creation. Swg has the best character creation out there, a lot of people say city of heros does, but you only choose the clothes you are gonna wear forever and your not able to manipulate the body in wieght, muscle, height, eye color, eye shape, ect ect...

Don't get me wrong, it does have problems like any other game. I am just giving a heads up since you requested things swg has.

that seems to be the main problem with UO... EA.
Face it, the only reason UO went the way of diablo II, and everyother mmorpg out there went the way of EQ is because EQ got the big subscription numbers.

I'm re-subscribing to UO to cast my economic vote. plus the new exapnsion coming out might just be interesting.

    been playing uo since 2001.

i was at brit bank a few months ago and this guy comes up to me and says "hey deides!!" i was like do i know you?  turns out he was the first guy i ever met in ultima online, a full 5 years ago!!  That's crazy you can do that in a mmo.

best gameplay, i was looking around a few months ago for a game that would re-capture uo's feel.  now that uo will get a new client with better graphics, im sticking with uo.

    no point looking elsewhere.
