Reader Discussion: Is Sony's Appreciation Program Enough?

firefly2003firefly2003 Member UncommonPosts: 2,527

Sony announced their "Appreciation Program" earlier today, detailing how they hope to make good with PSN users after the past week's debacle. As stated in their press release, the program will include the following:

  • Each territory will be offering selected PlayStation entertainment content for free download. Specific details of this content will be announced in each region soon.

  • All existing PlayStation Network customers will be provided with 30 days free membership in the PlayStation Plus premium service. Current members of PlayStation Plus will receive 30 days free service.

  • Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity subscribers (in countries where the service is available) will receive 30 days free service.

What do you think? Does free PSN content, a month of Playstation Plus, and a month of Qriocity make up for the massive security breach?

Aside from a PS2 and 2 PSP's registration, I don't use the PSN at all.

The compensation is not enough, knowing that my personal ata is in the open now. Looking at SE when they shut down the FFXI servers during the quake for 2 weeks and gave the players a whole free month, that's a good compensation. In the case of SONY, the servers were shut down for 2 weeks as well, but a lot of people are how directly hurt because hackers have their personal and financial data on file. If they want to, they can use this information on the net and do some real damage to the SONY customers - identity theft alone comes to mind, when you realise that in a lot of countries knowing someone's cc/bank account number, phone#, address and b-date is enough identification when calling by phone.

Personally, I think this compensation SONY offers is enough when the hackers won't use the data stolen, but hearing the whole database is already for sale, we all know some serious shit will happen in the future. It's only logical SONY will have to pay for those matters in the future as well...

I'm not a big user of PSN as I mostly just play FFXiii and Castle crashers on my ps3. But some free stuff is never a no. But reps to Sony for finally coming to a conclusion and solving the problem.

    Not for me.

The free subcription time is good compensation for the downtime, but it's not good enough for the stolen data. Especially with those who aren't subcribers, you can't just offer something they never asked for and claim that you've compensated them. Sony should at least give multiple options of what to take as a compensation, so that as large part of the users as possible would find some compensation that's useful to them.
