Returning to SWG

EcnaliEcnali Member CommonPosts: 49

Greetings!

I've resubscribed to SWG. The despair of crafting in every other MMO has finally taken its toll. I love LOTRO - possibly one of the few people to love LotRO, but their crafting is not like SWG's. WoW's and its vastly new and improved 'competition game', RIFT - AKA WoW 2011) - also have mediocre crafting (Rift's crafting panel is in fact quite unpleasant - LotRO's crafting panel at the least  has a certain elegance).   Of course, EVE's crafting is rather complicated and fun, but it requires a lot of ...effort ... and, well, there's a certain amount of terror involved playing EVE, especially if you are a lone industrialist just trying to make one's way in New Eden.

Which brings me back to Star Wars Galaxies. I've terminated my WoW and Rift subscriptions. I've left my kinship in LotRO and will minimize my time there - mostly to pay the rent and since I've 3 lifetime accounts there it's not like I need to unsubscribe.  I will still play EVE - their crafting is fun and my avatar is at a point where I feel I am contributing - quite a lot, actually, but the siren song of SWGs crafting system has me enthralled.

So, 2 accounts reactivated. I've created some new avatars on Starsider as it has been locked and am unable to transfer my level 90s there. This is okay, and am having a blast starting to level a new Medic from scratch. Starsider is busy - tonnes of players in Mos Eisley.  Also have a CL90 Entertainer ready to go on Starsider as well. I'm having a great time....well, it would be better if I could actually get online, but...that's another thread - on the one hand, I feel bad for SOE, on the other, I'm quite annoyed...

    Down to my questions:

1 - my new medic on Starsider is looking for a guild...anyone have advice about an Alliance-leaning guild or mixed? I can also bring in my CL90 Entertainer.

2 - I have a few CL90 avatars awaiting transfer off Bloodfin; what sever(s) have a higher population? I'm considering Europe-Farstar as I'm deployed overseas, but, am also looking at Chilastra - as I know that eventually I'll head back to the States.

I'm excited to be back! Thanks for taking the time to read this post and looking forward to hearing your advice.

Isn't all SOE games down atm?

  • Entropy14Entropy14 Member UncommonPosts: 675

Yes SOE is down, and whatever little was left who still gave SOE money will probably leave, I imagine Sony is in for some very hard hard times in the future,

Not sure how many subs they will lose cause of this, but I imagine it will be many,

You may be far from the only person to like LOTRO (it's an excellent game and still has a massive following) but you may be the only person I've ever come across for whom crafting is such a key gaming feature he'd be willing to return to a 10 year old game to get more of it. Maybe I'm in the minority but I've always found crafting at best something that had to be waded through as a necessary evil to get cash, to occasionally make slightly better stuff than quests offered or just for something to pass the time when not doing something more fun. Anyway each to their own, enjoy ;-)

    I'm not so sure.

People would possibly leave in droves if  this was SOE's fault.  But it's not.

As someone said, a while back it was a major bank that was hacked, then it was some global corporation.  Now its SOE and next time it will be someone else.  It could have happened to anyone, and will again in the future.

Besides, whereas many games can be bundled together as being very similar in style and approach, SWG is not one of them.  And players who like what SWG has to offer won't be in any hurry to leave - because what they get from SWG they can't get in any other game.

If I'm reading the press release correctly, we'll get a free month for each day with the servers down. Good news... only if you're bank info weren't stolen x)

Anyway, if you ever come to Farstar (and it's a trully busy server nowadays thanks to the FreeCTS) I guess our guild DAWN is recruiting (and always looking for extra medics, hehe). We are mostly imperials, but also have rebels and neutrals... we do a lot of heroics, a lot of city invasion, and not much of PvP (even if some of our members really like to PvP). We have 3 cities, and over 100 active members.

I recently returned to SWG for the crafting.

In-game i have met dozens of players who recently returned ... for the crafting.  And many players who have been there for years now ... for the crafting.

And I have managed to persuade two friends to return to SWG ... they have done so ... for the crafting.

I left WoW, Vanguard and Lotro ... guess why?  Because the crafting was so basic and dull.

No, I don't think you are in the minority for seeing crafting as an uninteresting but necessary evil.  But I do think you will find that many people are keen on the crafting aspect of games - especially when it is as complex, in-depth and challenging as in SWG.

just read the press release . and the way i read it you will get 30 days free plus for every day the server is down you will get one day

SOE will grant customers 30 days of additional time on their subscriptions, in addition to compensating them one day for each day the system is down. It is also in the process of outlining a "make good" plan for its PlayStation®3 MMOs (DC Universe Online and Free Realms). More information will be released this week.

so we have so far 30 days plsu i think 2 or 3 additional days so far

I agree....I have played many games and nothing compares to SWGs crafting.  It was central to the game, it made the game!

The weapons and armor you got was not from killing the same dragon every day for three months in a row like most MMO's (to me raids like that are so stupid).  Although you would have to farm monsterous creatures for drops but they were not unique (except for one that I know of).

If you wanted the best gear, you needed a competent crafter who was dedicated and extremely knowledgeable....the economy was also player based....crafting was key to immersion in SWG for me.

SWG was a great game. Possibly overshadowed by newer games today. But a great game like Space Invaders, Zelda and Call of Duty.

Just like those games, ten years or more from now they will have value in playable content and just plain fun.

I can easily see why someone would want to go back and use any particular feature of SWG.

However, it cannot and will not ever be forgotten what SOE and its leaders did to our beloved game.

Yes, that's right....... NGE. or in lameman's terms....... "screw you, were Sony and we don't care about you anyway, we'll do what we think is right and you won't have a say in it, we'll take your money and laugh our way to the bank"

That is Sony (SOE), free moth of subscription or not.. Nuff said.

Hey Edell, thanks for your advice and plug for Farstar and your guild, Dawn. If SWG ever comes back up online, I'll certainly consider Farstar and your guild. I wish other respondents had expressed opinions or offered some advice to my two questions.  Good news! I've since learned that a number of my old guild have/are/will activate their accounts as well.  No matter what the naysayers say (apparently, after having perused the "veterans who hate SWG" thread, there are quite a few disgruntled players out there)  SWG still rocks.  I never played pre-NGE, and I still think it's fun; I had great times, and I hope to have more. SWG Crafting Rules! My Regards.

They got rid of the spazzy movement and combat?  They fix the targeting system?  Still run like the ending segment from Benny Hill?

The answer is NO,  the combat is still the same as it was when they went to the NGE, if you hated it then you will hate it now.

Besides were not sure theres going to be any games online for a week or maybee two weeks.  After the database was hacked. Were still down, all soe products.

I re-subbed a few days ago also, needed my Star Wars fix and SWG is all there is to choose from, excluding the single player games of course. It has never been as good as now, I'm divided if I liked the CU or today better, still miss decay tough. Without the crafting and SW IP it would have shut down long time ago that's for sure, the entire game is based on item hoarding and the content is still based on grinding, the "boring" kind of grinding. Makes you wonder if they design the content with AFK macroers in mind.

Typical that they get hacked JUST WHEN I want to play. Jesus.

wb...i resubbed about a month ago and love it!

i wish more ppl would come back...it's still better than so many games out there...and with regards to crafting...there isn't any that come near it.

i had hopes for swgtor and looked into their crafting system and unfortunately it expanded on a  "fallen earth" crafting system....leaving swg as the ultimate crafter/trader game of all time imo.

all new games do is offer premium graphics that are better than the most recent MMO and a better combat system...tweak this and that in the standard themepark template and POW it's release time.

sad but i've played every major MMO release since swg and asheron's call and they all seem so much like ur playing doctored  up version of WoW or sumthing...a few games stand alone (eve, guild wars, ryzom,...)

iv'e looked at a lot of games and ones that get past the "themepark" mentality are still the most interesting to me...they will outlive the rest.

They took your money despite their servers being offline with no ETA for restoring the service?

Just out of curiousity how did they bill you? via the launchpad? that works?

Went back 3 years ago. Crafting was close to the old way, But had a hard time dealing with some old bugs that still had floated around since the disembowelment of the orginal code. it was fun but lacked many things that made it fun for me.

yeah us old SWg batsrads will always be haters, not my fault really. it happens when I get close to voldomort that dam scar starts itching again.

I do hope you folks that went back get some free game time tho. Crafting gotta be better then what TOR has and or will be. So sick of themparks man truly.

    Peace

I really don't see much point in SWG's crafting if they still have decay turned off.

yea i wish theyed just put decay back in..lol.

one of the many things they should put back in.

it's still a great game crafting/game economy and housing wise....if u get past the clutter etc..

but i started playing some less populated servers since they implimented fcts(free char transfer service)  and there is actually a lot of room for guilds/cites to develop etc...

the fcts...will actully consolidate some population

starsider is overpopulated and u can't transfer there...yet.

fcts also opens up server to server trade in a more competitive way as well.

i hope the game doesn't shut down...lol  maybe one day the pitfalls can be tweaked enough to revive it even more.

i was amazed to see so many people playing when i resubbed..and although item decay would create a better player driven economy..stuff still sells like mad.

  • AC1074AC1074 Member Posts: 274
Please don't mention decay on the official SWG forums....well you can but don't say I didn't warn you lol. At any rate I resub every now and then to SWG. I think It still has a decent following but something needs to be done with the less populated servers. Listen after all the crap this game has went through just enjoy it for what it is....it's star wars.
  • william62william62 Member Posts: 32

they allow free character transfer service from less populated servers to populated ones every 90 days per character.. with the exception of starsider..on ss i havent seen that many ppl since it's hayday.

the fcts really might help consolidate some of the servers as secondary populated ones to ss..it's already happening..i resubbed and created toons on the secondary hubs that are getting medium population status..opposed to heavy on starsider.

yeah i was kind of comfused on that one too....  how bout inactive people are they going to try to get them back in by giving them a free month?

They've done the "come back and play SWG again for free" deals before, so If they felt they could benefit from it now, they would again. In my case, I stopped playing those freebies a while ago and wouldn't return to the game now even if it became F2P.
