Armsman no good?

DrSawDrSaw Member Posts: 81

I was reading some game reviews and talking to some players online and they were telling me that Armsmen are practically useless as the game progresses. They told me that in RVR all of the combat is RANGED and that Armsman are just easy targets and are always the first ones to die.

Is this true? I'd like to hear some of the veterans comment on this.

Thanks.

You will here many complaints from people saying that tank classes are obsolete in RvR.  It is true that range is very important.  It comes down to play style and what you want.  They are not useless espically since you are an Alb.  They come in packs and stamped all over the enemy so I would not worry.  If you were playing a Mid then I might worry.

I would ignore their comments and simply play your character.  At level 20 go out to the BG.  Play around in there until around level 24.  If you are finding that you do not like what is happening out there given what you want and your play style then switch to a different class.

I like my Paladin over armsmen. Tanks aren't useless in RvR, but sure casters play a better part. But when you're roaming around with a full group and you run into another full group, us tanks have to take care of the other casters and interupt their casting and knock the shit out of em.

Armsman has always been my choice, but I can't say I put much stock in "what is good". I do what is most fun and matches my playstyle.

If you want an alb tank I think Armsman is the last one you should pick. Most groups will run Mercs for the damage, and Paladins for BG and end chant. Reavers can bomb. The Armsman just doesn't bring much to the group as the other tanks.

When I started playing the game I was an Armsmen. From expansion to expansion they were pretty much phased out, because of Mercs, Pally's, and Reavers. The poster above pretty much summed up why. I do not play my Arms anylonger in rvr, I use him more for PvE. I currently play an Inf. A better choice would probably be a Merc. 50 style, and 50 DW. Your golden with that spec and will be able to hold your own. I'm not saying you will be able to take on a small group, however you will fair out nice. Good Luck image

I played a Dwarf Warrior for Midgard and a Ogre Armsman for Albion. Melle is very important for pve and is likewise for rvr. Tank classes are the hardest class to play in the game BUT when you get in close quarters in rvr tanks really rip casters up very quickly. I find tank classes the most rewarding and the most work to put ino a character. With good healers a tank can be very deadly. Usually comabt starts out with two armies lined up in front of eachother with bowmen and casters firing away at eachother. Melee stays behind as the lines begin to close slowly. When the lines close to the point where you can run into the lot that is when your job shines.

Savages, Zerkers, Warriors and the lot can tear up the healers quickly.... from that point on casters are almost finished since they die in 3-4 hits without healers. Tanks don't do that much damage comapred to casters but it really makes you appreciate ranged and close combat. When fighters get close up to the mages than those casters start to appreciate how fast you can kill them as well.

Spirit masters for instance are primarily best at Point Blank Area of Effect. They have to really on tanks to keep the aggro off them with shield stuns or mace stuns while they nuke everything around them.

I felt that being a tank with no range could be frustrating but the tension would build up so high waiting for the chance to burst into the lot and start hacking down the healers and casters.

Armsman are better damage dealers than warriors if they have polearms. They can kill casters in 2 hits most of the time. So when you get up close to them.... they won't be sticking around long. You get two Ogre armsman on one target you got yourself a dead healer/caster really fast.

HA, that's made my day. Ever try leveling a rogue?

From my experience, a good RvR tanker does these jobs:

    • When raiding keeps, they take all the primary fire from archers/guards in keep and keep them busy while the weaker classes kill them. Aggro management is key.
    • They hold down the doors when they are being broke down, to help Dmg-Dealers against any threat.
    • When groups meet head on tanks are the hardest ones to drop, and often aren't the primary target. With my Eldritch, I never even think of bolting a tank w/ shield, cause he'll just block it.
    • Siegemaster Taker. Tanks have the best chance of getting a siegemaster to it's place simply because of their presence.

Another good fact about tanks is stealthers will have to think twice before attacking you, because it's pretty hard to take down a buffed Armsmen.

Oh, and BTW, armsmen have range!!!! CROSSBOW 4 teH WIN!

Armsmen are pretty good in RvR, and theyre not always the first target, they stay in the back and wait till the casters have softened the enemy up, then the tanks roll in and mop up the rest. and theyre not rangeless, they have a crossbow. they also keep the casters save by taking the main fire by archer npc's
