Not... ORPG, or RPG.com.
So why are we catering to those who are fans of games that are not MMORPGS?
Hence... GW is getting all this praise... people are comparing it back and forth to mmorpgs.
But it ISNT a mmorpg. You are comparing apples and oranges. People are rating is so HIGHLY simply because it has NO monthly fee. What is their point? GW is like Diablo 2... which also didnt have a monthly fee....
I do not see Diablo 2 on the "released games" list, so why is guild wars on there?
THis site needs needs to get it's priorities' straight, and time to take Guild wars off the "Highest Ranked MMORPGs"... because the game ISNT even a MMORPG.
Add like a misc section for rated games, because 8.7 for a non-mmorpg, compared to the ratings of all other mmorpgs, does not mean anything.
Thanks

look smartass, MMORPG are MASSIVE MULTIPLAYER ONLINE ROLE PLAYING GAMES! these games are ONLINE only, Diablo 2 is not a massive multiplayer online game, cause it have a singleplayer mode, and if you look around and find the news, different mmorpg games are changing. So there is not only ROLE PLAYING GAMEs, but also FPS, RTS, and other games.
Guild Wars is a mmorpg, cause it's about leveling up, get magic and different skills, and the game is fantasy-wise... People Voted Guild wars cause it's there faviorate mmorpg,
if you don't like it, then don't even play it, don't tell us what to do.
I think lots of the high ratings for Guild Wars are from it being free. That game could still be sold with monthly fee's as well as other games. People would still buy it but not as much. GW is close to an MMORPG.
It is an ORPG because they even say that on the official Guild Wars site. I bought the game and... I never even play it. Games like FFxi is what I would like to play. But... I think we should let Guild Wars have its fame... eventully it will be like "wtf was guild wars!?" Its not forever. There will be a new game and the forums on GW will stop, main page content for GW will stop. Just like everyother game.
Guild Wars- soon. ( I really like Guild Wars though.... never get the chance to play it. Always busy doing other stuff.)
Incorrect... it's an ORPG. MMORPG's all require montly fees. GW isnt the "first mmorpg to not charge a fee"
It's a different genre... hence if you read the GW's sites' FAQ, it even says it's an ORPG, not a mmorpg.
rofl... it's not rated highest because "it's their favorite mmorpg". It's because people have different standards for different games. Obviously a game with no monthly fee will receive more praise than the other. The only problem is ONE is an mmorpg, and the other is NOT.
So why is this site catering to a game that isnt even a mmorpg?
Guild Wars is famous cause it don't got the EVIL P2P, and it's fun to play with others and the PvP is good too.
no, P2P is evil, we want to play some free MMORPG instead of Draining our pockets and also to prevent Greedy people and companys that causes scams and other shit (hint: Mourning)
we all know that, not everything is free.
well, some people voted just cause it's the faviorate mmorpg they ever played, even when people beta tested and play other mmorpgs like Everquest 2 and WoW and other games too, not only that but also the details/features they like, even if people did not play it but heard of good details from othere, and people who played and tell what they like and dislike.
cause people love free games then P2P, people get bored of P2P games and play different other mmorpg, Guild Wars is a mmorpg, cause it DO NOT HAVE A SINGLE PLAYER GAME! it's MMO (massive Multiplayer Online) cause it's famous, and people liked it, and there is ALOT of people playing the game, cause it's MASSIVE, and it's MULTIPLAYER, and it's ONLINE!
I think you are right shawdolord but, it is true that GW is a ORPG. ( http://www.guildwars.com/default.html )
If you look around the site a bit, it tells you the game is ORPG. But, I think Guild Wars should be marked as an MMORPG. Its just like lots of MMORPG. And its not true that every MMORPG has to pay monthly fee's. Not at all. Its just a game that is big ( lots of playing time. ) Online, and Role playing game. Guild Wars is all of that. I bet everyone saying that Guild Wars should not be on MMORPG.com hasint did not even bother playing it.
I think the only reason its on the game list is because the company that created GW gave mmorpg.com some money.
"I'm sorry but your mmo has been diagnosed with EA and only has X number of days to live."
I think GW is an MMORPG. It fits the definition of what one is, all be it, loosely. Diablo2 is not considered an MMO - not per se, but it could be classified as one because b.net allows for players to gather in large chat rooms before debarking on an instance. GW basically does the same when you enter a main city. You enocunter multiple players and then go adventuring into instanced zones. Those cities are basically graphically chat rooms that allows players to do more than just chat, but basically it is to bring them together in order to find a group to go adventuring with.
I honestly hope it's just to piss you off.
Why do some people fear change so much?
Currently:
Playing: WOW & GW
1. they want to stay with the old
2. they hate the new change
3. they are just trolls and live like trolls
who cares, the more games on there the more for me to see.
guild wars a mmorpg, not really but i played it and had fun
gunz a mmorpg, er....no way but still i checked it out and it was cool(i uninstall becasue i dont do shooters, but it was cool to see) and i dont cringe when i see everyone talking about it.
it dont hurt me one little bit if you put yahoo pool over on that list, how does it hurt you.
Welcome to the glue factory.
I have to reply to the moron that made the all inclusive statement about ALL MMORPGS having fees. So Phantasy Star Online is a MMORPG and Runescape isn't? Interesting. Sounds to me like someone wants to keep the whole MMORPG gig confined to those that can pay $200+ per year to play. I think I speak for everyone when I say you can stick that whole concept right up your elitist little ass!!!!
BTW, instancing doesn't exclude a game fromt he MMORPG label. As already mentioned, Phantasy Star Online was (and is) considered a MMORPG. Having a single player component also doesn't exclude a title from bearing the label since the upcomming Phantasy Star Universe is supposed to have a single player campaign that spans over 40 hours of gameplay. And yes, I totally loved PSO
It's kinda interesting that the closest thing to PSO on the PC is pissing off so many "old School" veterans of the genre. GW is the future of MMOGs because it's business model is more in line with traditional (i.e. single player) developement cycles. As with Half-Life, just when the community starts to get bored, another expansion is released for the same price of the first retail game. It's cheaper to make, evolves over time and doesn't require hideously overbloated servers to run. Nah nah nah!!!!!
This place is full of tree-huggers and tofu fartn' faeries...
LOL at Sekura.
You sound like SoE is paying you to make propaganda against some competitors who understand the average player better then they do.
The only way MMORPGs could be the main computers games is by been better solo games then what consoles are doing, and by trashing soloers, they are failing miserably. And any happy soloer currently soloing online is a potential recruit for my groups, if they rather solo, their lost, dont kill soloing! (just make solo and group uberness differents)

Lots of ppl love the game, it's not an MMORPG, but it's close to it, stop complaining about it.

ParaTrooper, That guy that used to mod the MMORPG.com forums.
Apples and Oranges have a few things in common. Both have seeds, both are grown and both are fruits. both have skins as well. There are more things in common with apples and oranges than uncommon things, so the expression you chose does not give weight, specially since they both come from trees.
I like MMORPGs, but Guild Wars Succeeded where others failed.
The point of a MMORPG is to play with your friends and explore an entire world. To think your way through a situation and to have fun together. While MMORPGs may have had those intentions in the past, it has failed lately in those goals.
MMORPGs of total have become grinding games in which PvP is possible by having a character who is 20 levels higher than you slaughtering you at every turn. A genre that has been taken over by powergaming power houses who care more about "Leveling up" than actually uncovering the story. Many I know in many games dont go through the story and simply just level up. Now that you gain experience points from doing quests, the genre conformed to the will of others.
Guild Wars makes it so "Might doesn't make right" and players who are level 20 can tell the difference between a good character and bad character. There are many to Guild Wars and Ironically enough, Level is not a factor. You can party with anyone and help anyone.
Everytime I enter a party or am about to do PvP, NO ONE EVER ASKED ME ABOUT LEVEL. They asked me about complementing skills. A typical MMORPG experience is:
Myself: Hi!
Other player: What's your level?
Myself: Oh Im 27
Other player: Oh can you join us?
Myself: Sure
Or
Myself: Hi!
Other player: what level?
myself: oh im 27
Other player: Sorry, looking for 40+
Myself: ok, ty
Other player: bye
Sorry. But Im pretty much sick and tired of the level and class discrimination that occurs in this genre. Lets not forget the common
You take 50 damage from sword attack
You take 30 damage from Idiotic skill
You have been killed by "I_Got_Pwned"
I_Got_Pwned: Who's your daddy now (insert expletive here)!
Level of my character = 10 -20
Level of "I_Got_Pwned" = Max Level
I view Guild Wars as Superior to the MMORPG Genre right now
It feels like a MMORPG when I play it, only better. In fact it makes me feel like a cross between singleplayer console RPGs and MMORPGs. I like the story to the game.
One great thing I love about this game is no more ridiculous playershops litering the streets like piles of trash waiting to be picked up and bought by others. You can literaly sell something in 5 - 15 minutes and not waste time, also money doesnt really have much meaning in guild wars.
NCSOFT has called for a new Genre "CoOperative Online RolePlayingGames" to classify Guild Wars as one.
Find me a MMORPG that has the following:
~Full PvP, not level based, but always balanced by character development and not something like HP.
~Cinematic Cut scenes for each part of the story
~The ability to travel to any ciry you have been to before for free.
~The ability to join in a party or be asked to join or be given a party of my own fast.
~Graphics that utilize the latest technology (Only Guild Wars requires DirectX9c, others require earlier versions of DirectX and there are optimizations for ATI there)
~No load times. It takes 5 from when I launch Guild Wars, to when I am in the server playing.
~The ability to go to international servers to talk and play with friends from all around the world.
~The Insurance that I dont have to wait to play for a party or anything.
~Minimal time to prepare in town before leaving.
~A more balanced economy where it doesnt cost an arm and a leg for practically anything. (Guild Wars isnt perfect but there are always deals I can make to buy something from players and the shops are useful there without costing an arm and a leg for everything)
~One that allows me to create and develop a character fast and even change midgame character stats for free, without deleting a character and wasting 6 months of my life.
~One that is free to play online, which I can put down at anytime and pickup
~One that doesn't force me to play in order to keep up with my friends, that I can play in my own time without sacrificing my day because my friend wants to sacrifice his and I need him as a player in my party, so I am forced to RUIN my day by playing just to keep up. (Guild Wars kills this)
~One that can not easily be taken by organizations like www.ige.com which ruined FF11 and Lineage 2, who now are ruining WoW and EQ2.
Name me a MMORPG out there that has these qualities and you will find that there are none. Guild Wars Completely Fixes this and allows more ground breaking work to take place in the Genre itself. Its also new and original and its not a ripoff of some other major franchise or game.
I view Guild Wars as something new for RolePlaying Games as well as Restoration of Thinking vs being a powerhouse. Try taking a powerhouse through Hell's precipice who can't think and they will be slaughtered.
Evolution has to happen sometime and people have to be gutsy enough to make something different. ArenaNet and NCSOFT made something completely new and I love this far more than every MMORPG I am playing now to the point I have cancelled ALL MMORPG accounts (except for one, you'll never guess the name of the game) a week into Guild Wars. Its so much better I believe.
Finally a game that defeats MMORPGs by solving the weaknesses in the genre is released and the only reason everyone is bashing Guild Wars is because its kicking so much ass right now that people can't believe it.
It used to be that EQ2 and WoW fans were at each others throats, Same with Star Wars Galaxies and FF11 fans hating one another.
Guess what, In every forumboard I go to now, its all of these fans to these games, united and determined to shoot down Guild Wars and have failed.
Granted the feel is different. Even though we call them MMORPG, the reality is its only really MMO if you can feel it to be when you are actually in a party. When I am alone, it feels like a singleplayer game. Since the maximun multiplayer experience comes from who is in your party and most games have party sizes between 4 and 12 while the max party size, which tends to be full the majority of the time in Guild Wars is 8 after the desert, then you can have the feel of the game seeming like it MMORPG...
I love the fact I can have the entire map for myself to enjoy with just the party, and not have to deal with Bots who ruin the game or spend the time to find my own hunting ground.
Average time it takes to play a MMORPG
Waiting for a party = 20 minutes to 1.5 hours
Preparing in a town = 20 minutes to 1.5 hours
Getting from A to B = Between 5 minutes and 1 hour
Delay from chatting too much and not playing the game = 30 minutes to 2 hours
Delay from all characters Dying and having to start over = 1 hour minimun
Delay from replacing a character who has left the party to fill your last spot = 5 - 20 minutes
Average time it takes in Guild Wars
Waiting for a Party = 0 minute - 10 minutes (0 because henchmen do wonders)
Preparing in town = 5 minutes - 10 minutes (at most)
Getting from A to B = 5 minutes at most, sometimes no time worth mentioning
Delay from Chatting = None (people only talk when they want to ask a question about the game or join a party/buy or sell something) *from my experience, unless its 4AM and peoplem really do start talking*
Delay from dying and starting over = none, when u die you go back to a map spawn, but if you die in a mission, it takes 10 seconds to reenter the mission, but 15 - 40 minutes to make up for the time to make it to the point where you all died.
Delay from replacing a character that has left the party = Almost none, anyone would join you. The only time a delay exists is when YOU make the delay, like when You want monks, which can take anywhere from 1 minute to 20 - 30 minutes (if they are in high demand) to find a monk.
The only game that has less delay time than Guild Wars is Phantasy Star Online.
Now if you want to continue trying to convince this site to eliminate Guild Wars from its list, simply because your game is not number 1, hey go ahead, but eliminating a game that redefines and advances the genre by eliminating the weakness of the genre from this place on account of conventionalist/traditionalist mentality who are ignorant of evolution would be a mistake.
Errr, why so stressed out ? Certainly GW pushes what we think of as an A-Typical MMO but so what ? Why spend your time worrying about whether GW continues a strict adhearence to what MMO's should be, because they certainly will not be the last.
Many "mmo's" comming will not be what you typically think of as an MMO but that's good isn't it ? Why bang on MMORPG.com for trying to include a product that tried to do something a little different, which is obviously fairly popular, a well made game and fun for many people. I think it's awesome that mmorpg.com is opening up it's home to a "different" type of mmo, it's a good sign that it's willing to move with the times and include all facets of the business.
So sit back in your seat, take a deep breath and try not to break out in a sweat everytime you look at the game list, it's really not all that bad..
Important Information regarding Posting and You
umm...
Im not stressed...In fact I type around 120 - 150 words a minute, so my posts end up long.
I can sum up this argument in one little sentence:
GUild Wars is considered a MMORPG because the people who run this site think it meets the requirement of such, regardless of what /your/ opinion is.
Thanks and keep moving.
I believe a better summation is:
