It takes an average of five years to create a MMORPG.
World of Warcraft launched in 2004; it set a precedent shorty after and continues to be the most popular MMORPG.
It wasn't until 2007/2008... players really started to voice their complete disdain of the linear theme clones.
Since the success of WoW, we've seen multiple AAA attempts for the cash-crown: Star Wars Galaxies: NGE Revamp, Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures, Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning, Champions Online, Star Trek Online, Aion, RIFT, etc...
The problem with the above is simple: They are ultimately no different from World of Warcraft. The same steak over and over...but with different seasoning.
It's obvious that re-creating WoW is not going to earn you ma$$ive cashflow. It's not that simple.
My theory:
Since the average development time for an MMORPG is five years, expect to see two more years of WoW-clones, as nobody post 2008 will sink millions into the development of another clone failure.

He said Vangaurd is a WoW clone.
Funny.
Yeah probably at least 2 more years, but there are still other games out there.

Vanguard is a WoW clone. How is it different? Bigger Worlds? That's just mere seasoning. You still follow the same style quest progression and experience the exact same classes.
You can call it whatever you want: Ranger, Archer, Hunter, etc... they are all the same.
Rumor has it that ArchAge may bring us something different, and Soon[TM].

Yes. But that won't release for years.
Might be 2 years. Might not be.
Personally, I enjoy Mortal Online right now. There's also Perpetuum, Xsyon, and Earthrise.
There are a couple of bigger titles coming as well: ArcheAge and World of Darkness. Obviously, their release dates are unknown, so it's uncertain when they will be available.

Vanguard is NOT a WoW clone, lets get that cleared up.
I like WoW and think the model is just fine and can be expanded upon to make a success, hence what we see coming in SWTOR. The problem with the games you listed is that they tried to grab the success of WoW without realizing what made WoW successful in the first place. CREATIVITY. If you put passion into something it will be noticeable. Many of those game lacked a creative spark and were truly just "copies" trying to mimic the current trend in order to make a buck.
That being said, GW2 doesn't look like a WoW clone and neither does ArcheAge and both are games I can't wait to play and I love themeparks, although I personally have been touting and waiting on the themepark/hybrid ArcheAge seems to embody.
But with this logic they started making vanguard in 2002, when WoW wasn't released, so how did they copy it ^^
Have Played: FFXI, WoW, Aion, DCUO
Waiting For: TSW, World of Darkness, SWTOR
Currently Playing: KOTOR
Tried: Matrix Online, Rift, Xsyon, LOTRO, EVE, Guild Wars

Vanguard isn't a WoW clone, Vanguard reminds more of the oldschool MMO's like AC and EQ in gameplay feeling.
Seems to me more like a case of themepark burnout or allergy maybe, if even the slightest similarities to WoW cause you to dismiss games like that as WoW clone?
In any case, there's GW2, The Secret World, Firefall, Planetside Next and Arche Age (and maybe even WoD), I'd hardly call any of these 'WoW clones'.
... unless, of course you've become totally averse to WoW and any gameplay feature that reminds you in even the barest resemblances of WoW.

No beating a dead horse here, no sir...
That Guild Wars 2 login screen knocked up my wife. Must be the second coming!
That's your idea of a WoW clone? Exact same classes?! Show me where you can find the Disciple in WoW. Or the Bloodmage. Or the bard.
Quest progression isn't unique to WoW either. EQ2 does it and it launched, albeit only a month, but before WoW. I personally prefer quest progression for my leveling purposes. Matter of fact I wish VG had a better refined quest progression path for each zone as it wouldn't be such a nightmare to level past certain level walls.
Err no way Jose,Vanguard is no way a WOW clone, how u can associate VG with WOW,is beyond my comprension so basically if u have an Avatar,a server, race to choose, skills to develop, mounts then u are saying it's a WOW clone ?
So let's then forget the deepest crafting ever and the diplomacy thing, yep so typical of WOW !!,before makeing tenious links actually play the damn game first now if u did play it i'll be bloody amazed you actually came to this conclusion.
So what you are saying is we can expect at least two more years of posters complaining everything is a Wow Clone, and that what the MMO world really needs today is a big budget AAA sandbox game, but for some reason none of these complainers ever seem to be able to list exactly what kind of features this mystical game should have.
Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see something different on the menu as much as you, OP, but what kind of game are we talking here? Sandbox means many things to many people. By sandbox do you mean FFA full loot PVP, faction full loot PVP, either FFA or Faction PVP without full loot, PVP in instanced zones, or only certain zones, No PvP? Do you want Player made domiciles and cities that you can lose because the game allows for asset destruction, no asset destruction? No player made domiciles or cities. Economy based entirely off player crafted items, no player crafted items, a mix of player crafted and loot drop items? Leveling by quest system, no quest system, just the old school grind mobs until you hit cap? Level and class based characters, or no level skill based characters, instanced dungeons, non instanced dungeons like the old EQ days? I could continue but I think I've made my point.
Since just about every gamer I know has their own definition of what the term Sandbox means to them continuing to make posts that are essentially "Themepark BAD, Sandbox GOOD", is completely pointless. Until people tired of the status quo get together and constructively list exactly what features they are looking for in this mystical messiah of a game, no one is going to take you seriously.

Check out Guild Wars 2. While not "revolutionary" it's putting in a lot of good ideas that some MMO companies are afraid to. It's evolving the MMO genre, and hopefully other companies take a stand and put the work in to incorporate new ideas (ex: dynamic events) the way ArenaNet does.
And best of all, it won't take 2 years to release (oh yeah, and no sub fee).

I agree with everything the OP said except the "clone" part. Maybe he meant Themeparks without Sandbox tools to back up game play? (all what I know is SWG was that before the NGE). Original SWG is definitely not a WoW clone and was released before WoW. Vanguard was underdevelopement on 2002 (I personally was following it at around that time). How can it be a WoW clone?
Don't confuse the word WoW Clone and Theme Park please.
Well that is the heart of the problem isn't. The OPs post essentially boils down to "This sucks, Change it." He hasn't actually taken the time to expound on his ideas of what kind of game needs to replace these so called Wow clones, simply that he dislikes them.
Doesn't leave us much room for meaningful disccusion dose it?

Until someone is willing to take a real risk (not a in game "risk") and puts in a lot of hard work and effort to build something you want, it will stay the same. Too much work for most of the mmorpg gamers.

It doesn't matter when the new completely original MMO launches...it will still be called a WoW clone by people like the OP.
Agreed.
Hopefully 2013 and above. will look a little more promising for the future of MMORPG gaming. I think were heading in the right direction with games such as Guild Wars 2, Archeage, World of Darkness. Guild wars 2 - Quest Demisihment, Archeage - Interesting mechanics - World of Darkness - Making Sexy look sexier.
Maybe the future of MMORPG NG Gaming lays with Blizzards 'Project Titan' - You never know ;P! - Dun Duun -

Althought the OP is likely onto something here, I think the logic is flawed. Certain games that are labled WoW clones were deep in development when WoW released; thus, they aren't true "WoW clones". Granted, there has been a deluge of similar games the last few years, but I don't think WoW-hate will cause new and exciting times ahead. Basically, devs looked at WoW and said "we can get those numbers too". When in reallity, WoW is an abnormallity and it's success will not be replicated. Even as a SW nerd, I can say that it is unlikely that TOR will even aproach the zenith of the WoW subs.
No, we will finally see the much sought after and misunderstood "innovation" when devs start treating the genre like any other game genre and stop trying to replicate the un-replicateable. It's slowly happening even now...if a person wants to look for it.
I want a mmorpg where people have gone through misery, have gone through school stuff and actually have had sex even. -sagil
lol an i get warned constantly for flaming... First of SWG was released pre-wow. Aion is more of A lineage 2 clone. I could go on and on but wow from day 1 has been a kiddy game. t could be said that wow just copied and paste pieces of many games together.
=P maybe go outside and breath the fresh air?????????????
Get a new subject. Its getting old, it really is.
The repetition of "WoW Clone QQ" is sounding like an old lady nagging.
Yes everything is a WoW clone. But yet WoW is a clone of EQ and FFXI . So when will the OP get that everything is a clone of everything. And most compaines that spend millions of $$$ will make what sells and that happenes to be games like WoW , Aion , SWtOR , Tera ect. At the end of the day its always about PROFIT no matter what the game play is. And i only see the small privite compaines making any "Risk"
Played Aoc/DDO/FFXI/WAR / LoTRo / CO / Aion
Playing Rift
Waiting for FFXIV to be the game it should. so sad =(
Why release anything but a WoW clone? Or is it they just love to make fun of flops on this forum?
For some reason EQ1 is loved here, it was a turd that never did much with no competition, and now SOE has lost all your account information to hackers. I told everyone a game that can't even get a simple class like warrior right has hacks working there.
If you have any questions please ask. I have moved on to WoW from eq and no longer have any desire to play a dead game. Thank you. (posted by another selling his account in EQ1)
OP. First of all without being too mean but it's obvious that you are not the brightest of people and judging by your SWTOR forum posts and this thread proves my point.
I'm not sure if this thread is a poor attempt to troll or just a thread you started without engaging your brain before typing it out as the MMO's you refer too are not WoW clones. Remember that WoW wasn't the first MMO to incorporate the features it has as they were all done before. Maybe the next thread you start could be about what WoW copied from other MMO's itself
What really makes me wonder is why you felt the need to make this thread in the first place.
