First things first, its my first time posting on mmorog.com and I'm fairly new at gaming as I've never really been into them until now, which means I know very little about gaming. Cool right?
Ok, just wondering what are your opinions on the new D&D game coming out in August?
Personally, I've been a fan of D&D for a year and playing it is awesome. I don't think the game will be exactly the same as using the power of imagination, but overall my opinion is its going to be off the hook! WoW has some competition. Boys and girls I see the dawn of a new era. Do you?

Welcome!
But don't get your hopes up to high...most MMO's as of late are a disappointment. Just a little advice from waiting for a good MMO to come out for...3 years now.
i played the D&D games and i'm not really a big fan of D&D, i want to beta test the game once it's comes out for Beta Test so i can play the new game and see what i like about the game, and also to enjoy the game too like everyone else.
The E3 reviews are all good. I look forward to it but I hope it doesn't appeal only to the hardcore D&D fans. I know nothing about D&D, the rules and crap, hopefully I won't be too lost or far behind if I decide to play.
Welcome Menw!!!
I'm sorry to say that I didn't play D&D online but if you do, I'll respect that because everyone have their own opinion & likes. Have fun and be COOL..
D&D is the most played RPG ever. If they get only a fraction of their player based, they will make all competitors drool. However, the average D&D fan prolly dont even have a computer, so it is quite hard to predict the outcome.
In comparaison, Blizzard have the biggest fanbase we ever see for a MMORPG dev team, however every Blizzard fan have an interest in computer games. D&D fanbase outmatch many times the Blizzard fanbase, but if you only count the D&D fans who have interest in computers games, I dont know anymore.
If D&Donline respect the rules ''by the book'' (so solo is possible and extremely rewarding, yet extremely hard), I have no doubts we will assist to the rise of the new King.
It would be cool to have ''alternate servers'' for each variants of the rules system...a 2nd edition server for exemple would prolly attract their players. But those are details.
PS: Computer games traditionnally attract ''soloers'' as far as the D&D world goes. Those claiming about ''community'' should consider that Living Greyhawk completely outmatch any sense of community an online game can built...

WoW Anofayle im pretty sure that ur wrong for america.......
if u think diablo or diablo 2 had less fanbase then the paper D&D games at the time you are probably dead wrong.
No i know your dead wrong.
And ever since electronic RPG's D&D isnt half as played hours wise as any major RPG, not even counting MMORPG's
Simply because less is needed for an electronic game, u dont need the 4 or 5 players, the guy who runs the game, the dice, and the mountain dew and Funyons(mp?)
i think there have been more hours of ANY FF game then D&D ever played.
i know you are a total fanactic...... But Anofayle u cant tell me Diablo 2 got outsold for number of copies then the D&D books in print at the time.....
such talk is completely wrong.
im not saying D&D online will be bad, its not my cup of tea, its not everyone's cup of tea, and at the end of the day it is just a competetor to the games coming out near its release.
it isnt anything but one game, Anofayle you are sounding like the Halo Fanactics who cant understand that Halo is just one game.
you need to get a little more level headed.....

Well...I have many friends who never play any Blizzard product, but play tons of D&D products(offline).
As to the number of selling, someone like me have buy 3 Blizzard products in my life...do you really think I buy only 3 books of D&D? I must have buy 30 if not more then that, I dunno, never bothered to count them.
I guess with youngers folks you could be right however. But the 25- are not the majority of customers.
But to even think Blizzard could come close to TSR fanbase is a funny thought. How many peoples 25-50 play D&D at an era they didnt even own a computer? Do you assume those peoples would in majority buy Blizzard products and play on computer?
Of course, I have no idea about Asia, I am only talking about ''western civilisations''. And I am dead sure D&D is a LOT more known then Diablo or WoW or whatever you wanna bring...and to the number of sells, they are not even in the same league! Yes, Blizzard sold possibly more computer products then TSR, but the computer products hardly represent 5% of what TSR is. And now, those fans are possibly getting slowly, but certainly, the idea of getting computers or playing with a computer...they just need the right game.
Of course you may feel better thinking a computer game outmatch a RPG with the books in sells, but the fanatic is you here.
PS: D&D online sells will not be a burst like WoW, we are talking of a much more mature playerbase, olders folks. They wont rush at release(I will, but the average D&D fan is patient and can wait a full year AFTER release and good reviews to consider to try it). Unlike WoW, D&Donline will be prospering even if Turbine add nothing to the game in 2 years...and Turbine will prolly feed it more and more with each passing month. Dont ever expect to see D&Donline price drop, if it drop they will lose customers, so Turbine cant drop those prices, it need to remain at the initial setting or improve, and they have to add expensions to respect the D&D spirit(many EQ players complain when some prices drop, they were D&D fans and to see the price drop = the game is not worth it anymore, which in turn keep others D&D fans away from EQ). The average D&D fan will buy the game in 2d20(16-20/X2) months year with a group of friends...they dont care to meet the kids who are not fans and will not be there when they start to play.

anofayle i am willing to bet you if you break down the sales of all of TST/wizards product and compare it to the sales of all blizards product
blizard will have sold more since the TIME BLIZZARD HAS BEEN RELEASED.
and you cannot count things tsr/wizards liscensed that they did do any development for.
i am willing to bet you that there has been more blizzard games sold then D&D books EVER. and this is only counting TSR/blizard.
its not that hard of a bet for me to take, because
A. More PC's that game then there are people willing to play D&D by a amount of maybe 100 times greater.
B. D&D has always been seen stereotypical and judged by cultures in the west as a total geek/loser thing. where computer/console games have basically become accepted since early 90's. so yet again theres more willing audience.
C. Humans are stupid, fat, and lazy and paper RPG's dont provide as much instant gratification.
im not discounting D&D or paper RPG's im just saying they are a much smaller audience.
one is a growing Industry with over 40 billion in sales last year which is probably more then all Paper RPG's ever have gotten and they have been out longer.
Paper RPG's will die eventually if this keeps up.
but as for D&D online i will go with the best game that is something new I WANT TO TRY, and D&D online isnt my cup of tea for that. i think freeworld is much much more innovative and better ideas with a fully functioning eco system.
this means if the DoDo birds are all hunted there extinct and dont respawn ever. i think this adds a totally new play dimension.
and DnL adds the dimension of DAOC style PvP without zoning and with actual map Age of Napoleon type strategy.
D&D doesnt have any features i think are significant enough to count as an improvement to the genre.
i dont wanna back a inbreed horse which is what WoW, EQ2, and several other games have become or are.

Believe what please you most!
But the senior devs know fully well that many of their friends never play any computer game with a few key exceptions resolving around TSR. They dont need a survey or to go far, they just have to think of their D&D games, and they know I am right.
Blizzard have what? 17 millions fans? Do you honestly believe D&D dont have many times that amount?
TSR was so successfull that they divide like maniacs to a point that even their huge playerbase was not buying enought to support those expenses. Just think of how many hours of work Blizzard ever pay for it games. Then try to think only for D&D products! If you still have doubts, there is nothing I can say to convince you.
When I grew a book and friends where much easier to find then a computer + games, not to mention that Diablo was not even release before MUCH after my gaming start. You obviously didnt grew at the same time I did. When I was a teen, Blizzard didnt even release diablo yet...D&D have many titles to flood you on Amiga or with books. I grew with ''Double Dragons'', we are quite far from a newly born Blizzard.
How many Americans(25+) where D&D fans at a point or another in their life? 1 on 10(can recall classrooms, it was more 1 on 5 where I grew). Do a simple math of 250 millions Americans X10%= already more then Blizzard...and Americans hardly represent 25% of the western civilisations...so make fun!
Lastly, the average Blizzard fan did play a D&D product in his life. The average D&D fan didnt play a Blizzard product(if 25+).

Hmmm. D&D is certainly a pionner, but I think Gygax and TSR take it from others games and products. Yet, I am kinda unsure...this is kinda, older then me.
I would not be surprised that the first ''levels'' system was used by psychology or some mental treatment and then was use in a hobby for the fun of it, but that is purely speculative.

Any MMORPG that comes out simply have hvae some form of PvP, even if its consenual PvP(which sucks) even if the PvP is not forced upon the Trammies, I read a couple months back that DDO while having very beautiful graphics from the couple screenshots I saw that it will simply be PvM unless they changed, so I stopped caring or looking for further info on it.
We need a MMORPG that has PvP but is meaning to it. WoW does not have it, SWG you would think would be the best setting to set up real PvP where you actually fight for control of your livlihood, but Caella from the pre-SWG release boards sure messed that one, god I hate that name now. UO they simply will not do anything for Felluca to save it in any way. FertBert and MrTact are too afraid to work on the Factions code(its a jumble of bad code) they told me in person at a Dev meetup.
Frankly, we need to see a grinding MMORPG use a system simliar to land control that Planetside uses. However something that is not level based combat like EQ and EQ2 is. Something with wide ranges of skills where you employ tactics to take down someone, not simply I am two levels higher than anyone on the field therefore I win.
Luravi,
Why do you come bumping into D&D, the most documented, the most developped RPG, hoping for it to change dramatically?
D&D is about grouping FRIENDS(or soloing if no friends, not about grouping many differents strangers endlessly) and progressing. PvP was never a part of it, dramatic change would automatically mean they get the fanbase angry, extremely angry.
D&D is what, 33 years old? And in 33 years, it was always about grouping friends to kill evil monsters, or to solo against the same monsters. It was never anything else then that, for 33 years.

I was speaking about what any MMORPG that is going to be created simply must have in some form or another, otherwise it won't be respected by a portion of the gaming community, and do you think any Business will simply willinly reject any fanbase off the bat? In their search of the almighty dollar, especially the bigger companies ala, EA, SOE, Blizzard.
Do not give me the arguement that EQ and EQ II did, we all know EQ was created with the afteraffects of UO pre-trammel days, after the outburst of harsh conditions in very early days UO, when the MMORPG industry was getting started.
Simply put, DDO is in no way seeking the PvP community to come join them, People who PvP will play DDO for other reasons because of the DDO universe, but DDO is not seeking PvP'ers to play their game.
And yes, I can well envision, the old pen and paper D&D having PvP in it, it was just simply not feasible when you had one DM running the whole group of players because back then he could not multitask two campaigns at the same time, these days its the backbone coding of the game that is the DM that does all the multitasking situational setups needed to allow pvp battles amongst your group against my group type of thing. In other words Hurray for modern technology. If only the Developers of every MMORPG were smart enough to design a system that makes complete use of technology to keep all gamers happy, which every MMORPG to date has failed to do longterm, in every aspect.
Enforced PvP will not be respected by a greater portion.
Also, if developping PvP mean less PvE content, depending on how much less, it may be quite advisable to focus on 1 aspect only, and the traditionnal aspect of the game NEED to be the priority. A side PvP system that have NO EFFECT on the PvE(no PvE rewards at all), is something I am 100%, but not at the expense of the vital PvE developpment. And guess what, the game is struggling to make it this year, with no PvP, dont even want to know the deadline with PvP in it.
PvP in D&D would be incredibly unbalanced and I hardly can see any serious person enjoying it. A level 1 caster can kill neutralize a level 20 warrior. But a level 1 warrior cant do a scratch on a level 20 caster.
PvP was never a part of D&D, and if they have troubles to deliver the PvE aspect, I rather have them focus on PvE.
If I have to PvP myself, I never even buy the game, and the peoples like me outnumber the PvP players who like the enforced vision. Before seeking to gain PvPers, they need to make the basic, and since they even shaft soloers(like every existing MMORPG shaft endlessly soloers, by making them weakers and lamers gamers...I am tired of this trash the soloers demeanor and PvP get more then it share, PvE soloers are the main market, and we dont even have 1 MMORPG, not even 1), I would be extremely angry to see ANY PvP before a good solo system, as it would betray the very spirit of D&D IMO.

By the way if D&D delivers a good translation of the original concept, I will eat my hat.
It's being made by Turbine so I am not getting my hopes up. Suspect that they'll find a way to ruin it.
Point of fact: Pen & Paper AD&D has more people playing it than any computer game ever published. It has had, over the past FOURTY (not 33) years, since it was D&D in the SEVENTIES, far more players than any computer game will ever be able to boast.
Point of fact: Gygax didn't take rules from any other RPG. D&D was the first. He wrote it. Others took his idea and modified it.
Point of fact: Turbine has managed to make two flop MMO's already. I really hope they do D&D ONLINE justice but I'm very concerned that they'll manage to ruin it. Neither of their two titles even topped 120,000 subscribers.
