Tried to log into EQ2 this morning and couldn't. When I went to the official website evidentally ALL of SOE is down. The placeholder page for SOE.com says this:
We have had to take the SOE service down temporarily. In the course of our investigation into the intrusion into our systems we have discovered an issue that warrants enough concern for us to take the service down effective immediately. We will provide an update later today (Monday).
Not good.

Moves on: nor all thy Piety nor Wit
Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line,
Nor all thy Tears wash out a Word of it.

Oh, here we go again...
Yeah, the whole service is down again I tried EQ2 first, then Vanguard and couldn't get in there either. Looks like those hackers did more damage than Sony expected...
SoE are probably been very catious after the fiasco with sony ps3 online thingie that caused 30million accounts to be leaked with their CC details and all.
it was very public and made news and bad pubilicity for sony
Well that might explain the problems i am having with getting a new password or how my security question to get a temporary password isn't working.

Don't be terrorized! You're more likely to die of a car accident, drowning, fire, or murder! More people die every year from prescription drugs than terrorism LOL!
yeah star wars galaxies is down to.
Yes i got the ps3 and eq2 i can barely log into netflix through ps3 says im not signed in been like that for over a week .
hacked for sure guess someone got pissed off at sony for not giving that drop in the pq raids lol hope its up soon !!!
I'm more concerned about whether my credit card details have been compromised. I really hope not! Gah... didn't think that the PS3 breach would affect SoE as well! Maybe they're taking them down just to be safe and to implement security measures? Or does anyone have any news?
Playing MUDs and MMOs since 1994.
SOE Station Service has been hacked last week as well!
Then they said that they thought nothing was stolen! Now they take down everything because they are concerned!
You do the math!
Yikes this does sound quite serious. Wonder if its a good idea to cancel my credit card.
If I were you, I would. Better to be safe than sorry in this situation I say.
I called my credit card company today and they told me their instruction was to block any card having a PSN / SOE account, upon customer notification, and will be replacing it free of charge with a new code.
So no need to cancel your credit card, but have it replaced instead.
Think this will pretty much put the final nail on the lid of Vanguards' coffin, maybe even EQ2's as well.
EVERY SOE game is down.
Don't cancel your card. Just monitor your account. Warn your bank about any strange charges at most.
Also better safe than sorry, don't sit there twiddling your thumbs hoping nothing happens to your CC, let your bank know of the concern and maybe htey'll even issue you a new card or flag the CC for activity.
Sucks all this happened. I was about to resub, but found 2 issues that kept me from doing so. 1.) The current account security debacle. 2.) I don't want to pay 39.99 for Destiny of Velious... a bit overpriced, IMO.
ermm this is the wrong advice for anyone in my opinion. If credit card details have been compromised, and no one knows for sure, not even Sony, then it's best to phone your card company and get a replacement card sent out. I already have done it, and within 3 days already received a new credit card and my other one is cancelled, took 2 minutes to sort out.
What you've said is what Sony are advising people to do, yet Sophos who are a leading security firm are saying cancel your cards, personally I would rather listen to someone who is an independant rather then a company like Sony who have just been hacked. Of course Sony will say that, they don't want to get sued for billions by every country for contravining numerous data laws.
Best to be safe then sorry in this situation.
Actually, what Sony has advised people to do is pretty spot on. Theres no reason to believe that credit card numbers for US players have been compromised at this point. I agree though that it is best to be on the safe side and just do it anyways, but that is a personal choice. Credit card transactions are one of the safest and easily traced types available. If someone did compromise the info of a credit card and used it, the vast majority of the time monitoring services are well aware of it within 5-15 minutes and take quick decisive action. In the event that you the consumer has to report suspicious activity on your account, generally it is easy to dispute those transactions and unless there is substaintial proof it was you who made them the institution typically rules in favor of the customer.
What Sony has advised their customers to do however is extremely important and a serious matter. Your CC number being stolen is nothing compared to your personal details floating around, identity theft is a headache you dont want. You most definitely should contact one of the three major credit agencies and have them put a 1 year red flag on your credit score. Anyone attempting to get a line of credit in your name basically wont be able to provided loan officers have done their job. If you have not taken these precautions its imperative that you do so as soon as you can.
I agree, I haven't bought it either. But the previous expansion is still available and usually $20 cheaper.
If and when the services come back, you can always play on EQ2X for free, limited character and race options, but then you don't have to buy anything. Thats what I did to get me back in the game. Plus having people to group with and actually having a lower level economy makes the game very enjoyable.
Actually, my post still stands with respect to the credit card details (you turned out to be right that information was stolen). As far as I have read, the numbers needed to actually use the cards online have not been stolen for people in my situation. So in other words, my credit card details won't have been compromised unless the emails I got from SoE are not accurate.
What is more concerning are people from a handful of countries in Europe that used bank cards that gave access to their bank account details. The cybercriminals will have not only the account numbers and bank code, but also potentially the account holders name, email, and address. Now that is really not good!
Edit- I should have specified for bank cards that actually use the account number in the card number. I used to have one like that.
Playing MUDs and MMOs since 1994.
Not too disgress from the OP too much, but I had somehow missed the EQ2X thing. It could, indeed, bring me back. (Of course, I can't right now.) But it's now on my list. Thanks for being the one to bring it to my attention!
This sheds a little more light on the situation:
"Sony did say that its PC gaming unit, Sony Online Entertainment, discovered last Sunday a file planted on a server that was named "Anonymous" and had the words "We are legion," in it. But the self-styled vigilantes denied involvement in the data theft."
Source
Someone got into their servers and planted stuff....they are doing damage control right now and making sure the servers are safe.
An email I got from SoE on 5/3/11 stated that Only Name, Address, Email, etc. was compromised for US customers but the CC #'s are on another protected network. The CC #'s that were compromised were from international accounts from some point until 2007. The database was forgotten about aparently.
I would still call your bank and get another card/number. More information on SoE's attack could still be "coming to light".
Just not worth my time anymore.
if and when it comes back up hit me up, My brother and I are starting up our own guild, mainly for lower levels. Would always love a good player!
Freeport (EQ2X): Dricac/Elminses/Rhopen all are my toons.
So do you think they are still billing us right now? like im a gold membership, paying 15$ a month and i know its not much but i work hard for my money and hate seeing it wasted, if they bill me on the 24th as usual i am going to explode.
I want to cancel my account but i can't, they removed everything from the site!?
any insight?
