The death of meaningful quests

Am I the only person out there that prefers quests that are so important that you look forward to the level when you get to do them?  Quests, that in completing them, grant you more than just gold/item.  Why is it that games being released now don't start until max level?

Lately, MMOs have fallen into the trap where quests are simply a meaningless shortcut to get to max level.  The term Themepark MMO has been used lately to describe this.  Pretty much every quest on the path to max level is easily forgettable the second its completed.  Players certainly don't look forward to getting such meaningless quests.

Whether you liked FFXI or hated FFXI, this game had some of the best questing experiences I've ever had.  When the game first came out, there was some endgame content, but I felt like the focus of the game was on the journey getting there.

There were many quests I looked forward to well before getting to the prerequisite level.  Some of these quests were the quest to unlock subjobs, quests to unlock advanced jobs, quests to obtain artifact equipment, the mission to acquire an airship pass.  These quests had a profound impact on my character.

Why can't we have MMOs where the game starts at level 1?  A game where I feel like I have actually achieved something before reaching max level?  Why don't any MMOs have any obstacles in place before reaching max level?

Majority of the new-gen players want numbers and shiny and thats just what the devs give them.

I want more meaningful quests as well.  Not the ones where you do it for the reward but where you do them for the insane epic-ness/fun factor/immersiveness.

Hopefully the next-gen MMOs will give us more of that!  If not then...Idk...go indy ftw?

Vanguard Diplomacy had the unrealized potential for the next generation of quests.  I mean their whole idea was things like to gain access to that dungeon you had to schmooze some and distract others.  Diplomacy to improve faction temporarily to get to your objective.

Unfortunately no other game seems to have followed up on that sphere and it seems to be being forgotten over time.

I havent looked indepth into guild wars 2 quest system but in this video they talk about how they want the player to feel more important and that things will change once you complete the quest and will stay changed for you

To the OP, I think I know what you mean.  If you take the involved instance of lets say a DDO quest and made it non instanced in the world (hopefully what GW2 is doing) I think it may be the cure all for meanlingless quest grinds.

Yep. I think I know what you mean. In some games there are quest you look forward to, although, the entire game is made up of pretty boring quest that you just grind out to get xp.

DDO was like that for me. A lot of quest/instances I loved doing, but after I did those it was like "Well, this sucks, now I gotta do the boring, tedious ones."

This is true, they should phase out the small, f2p meaningless ones, that would be awsome

That is what I LOVE about EQ2 even if you are max level you have to go back and do quests in order to be able to get that epicness weapon and they are not easy alone even at Max level lol.  They are important to your character growth and how attached you are to it.  The harder you work on a character and the more immersed you are in quests and lore the more you enjoy that game and will keep playing it longer.

I played WoW and did loremaster before Cataclysm.  Even Wotlk had enough quests to last quite a while if you spread them out.  The original quests to get 700 in each land was awesome you had to go back to those lands and hunt down the quests you might have misses in each land.  Cataclysm I had loremater of in 2 weeks rofl.  And was max level without even doing them all :(  I tried leveling an alt through the new level 1-60 quests and all I could do was stare at the screen.  They mainline streamed them all in sections.  So many in this zone and so many in that zone.  And not enough to be even worth the achievements that they are handing out for it.  It is like they turned the achievements into candy here have some I'll give it to you for FREE!!!!

I turned my WoW account off 3 months into Cata due to bad product and misrepresented advertising.  It was built up to be this HUGE expansion and it was the smallest one EVER!!!  And the easiest to level in.

Yes I want quests that have meaning and that I HAVE to do to be the true character that I am supposed to be.  So that I get the true feeling of RPG In my character because I have totally immersed myself in what the WHOLE story is.  Not just feel like I am running through quests to get to max level to get the best gear to be better than everyone else........  Because if I don't then I will be behind everyone else in the game and because of this I won't have anyone to play with because everyone only wants to do the max level stuff.
