SOE (MMO division) is finished...

DDD993DDD993 Member Posts: 3

SOE will collapse or start closing off operational divisions as a result of this;  there is no other conclusion to it all.

People have to remember that the hack and subsequent lawsuits that will follow affected approx 100m people overall. The class action lawsuits are going to be in the tens of millions dollar range if not more. The legal fees SOE is going to have to spend defending itself are going to be staggering.

SOE's MMO division has been barely treading water financially for what? 3-4 years? It is over for SOE's MMO segments once the aftermath is assessed by the lawyers and bean-counters.

Don't expect to see a single SOE MMO on the market in the next 30-90 days when the dust settles. I was an SWG sub back around 2007, saw this news and simply posted here; the game itself is irrelevant to the current subject matter.

I agree and sadly the lawyers on both sides will drag this out and we the paying public will be funding it. No win and you may finally see that divison file for bankruptsie if not the whole company.

So you saw the news and decided you wanted to show the world you don't know what you're talking about?

We will keep that in mind sir.

The lawsuit has absolutely no ground and Sony still have more money on laweyrs than people suing them.

I wouldn't be surprised if this not even get to the court...

It will be certainly expensive for Sony, the insurance contract remains to be a question, but overall I do not see a reason for doom and gloom.

We will first have to see if and when they are even able to put their current services back online, with them being under Federal investigation at the moment.

They won't be able to put their services back online till they get approval to do so, which means they first have to close the security holes and then get the whole network and it's security validated and approved.

That's why I said before that I would take my hat off if they even manage to get everything back online by the end of the month.

Seems like they are almost done with the mess and ready to go back online.

I'm personally wondering if the PSN isn't just a big back door into their system and they have to wait till that system is fixed before SOE can go back online.

My friend and her daughter play Free Realms.  Their only concern is when will the game be back up so that her daughter can purchase some sort of in game item from the cash shop that she saved her allowance up for.

I don't think SOE's games are going anywhere.

I wasn't aware the Feds had stepped in.  I just saw the headlines and made sure my credit cards, personal info, etc. were not affected (yes I keep paper copies detailing everything).

If the the Feds are involved at this point then they are finished. It is end of story:  they aren't coming back online in 30 days involving a case that involves the outright theft of approx 100 million individuals' personal & financial information.

Lets hope so. They have not produced anything good in years, time for them to close their shops and go back to creating PS 3 games.

I think OP is a bit of a doomsayer... If hacked games were bound to shut down because of lawsuits and reputation, than a lot of MMORPG's would not be online today...

WoW has a lot of hacks on a daily basis and is still up & running (don't tell me it's only account hacks - IMO it's too many hacks on specific accounts).
NCSoft has been hacked prior to the release of Lineage II and a lot of private servers popped up, but still Lineage II is running after 7 years...

I agree with OP that this hack will most certainly hurt SONY, PSN and SOE a lot, but will it be the end of either PSN or SOE? I doubt that. There's enough money (current and coming from subscriptions) in both devisions to keep it all running for years to come.
I do agree with OP however, that this hack might slow down development and updates for SOE (dunno about PSN since I don't have a PS3 or bother to get one - we're no console players at our home). Perhaps a setback for 3 to 6 months, but after that it'll be business as usual.

One positive thing... When this all is overm I'm 100% certain that SONY will make sure they won't get hacked ever again, and that our data is stored more securely than before...

Actually you would think they have time right now to program like crazy while the game is down :P

I wonder how many people are working at SOE. I wonder if they would be able to get new jobs in the MMO industry... or even gaming at all?

They best use this opportunity to re-release the greatest game of all time, PreCU Star Wars Galaxies!

Pre NGE SWG with modern GFX, maybe using CryEngine 2, would be an awesome MMORPG!

Instead we are getting this crappy single player thing Bioware is producing. image

Now see, there's the point, there are "people" working at SOE.  Not storm troopers for the evil emperor, and they're just working schmoos like the rest of us.  No reason to hate them for trying to bring entertainment to your living room (or basement as the case may be) and certainly no reason to wish them ill will.

No idea about network architecture of those, Sony only said that they are similar so I guess they both share same weaknesses.

@OP, I am sorry to inform you that this is not going to happen. SOE will be up and running. You don't just exit a market because of a thing like this.

The amount of misinformation and misunderstanding in this thread is impressive.  As far as the OP's assertion that SOE is "doomed" goes, exactly how long have you had access to Sony's financial reports?  What are you basing your statement of their "barely treading water" on? If nothing else had they truly been struggling financially they would have been closing games long before now to conserve resources.

In addition, as has been stated over and over and over in news posts and other threads, Sony IS NOT under investigation by the FBI.  The FBI is investigating the criminal act of Sony's database being hacked.  While some politicians are asking questions about thier security procedures (but they are politiciians, which means they won't do jack but yap) Sony is the victim as far as the FBI is concerned.

Perhaps Lucasarts can hand over Star Wars Galaxies, the way it is to another company?

In regards to the lawsuit, its going to be hard to prove that Sony is liable in anyway. They were a victim of a crime. To sue them successfully you have to prove they are negligent, and how do you suppose you go about doing that? If you say "their security wasnt update enough1111!!!!!" well thats highly subjective, and Im sure nobody here has even a remote idea of the facts anyways. Save it for the judge, who probably wont understand the majority of this either and will most likely end up saying "tough luck" to consumers.

If this were to ever get to a jury Sony would get hammered and hammered big time.
