Suggest me an MMO -- Seriously

anthonyman6anthonyman6 Member UncommonPosts: 73

What's up everyone,

My title basically explains it all. I'm looking for an mmo to play again. Some of my past games are GW, AoC, WoW, DAoC, Aion, and a couple of others.

Most importantly, I'm looking for an mmo with a great, social community. I'm aware I didn't give too much detail about my prefences but I'm looking for an mmo to kill some time while I wait for some more games (mmos and fps') Possibly to make the game my new "game to play".

LFGame section would be more appropriate for this topic. Explain what you want in an MMO too. If your wanting good community, any MMO has that, if you find a nice guild to play with.

    Playing - EVE, Wurm

Retired - Final Fantasy XI, Anarchy Online, Mabinogi

    Waiting - ArcheAge, Salem

If you want something like WoW then play LotRO or Rift.

If you want something more open ended sanbox style I would say play EVE or Perpetuum and keep an eye out for ArcheAge this next year or so.

Rift is not bad So u might like it (syaing an mmorpg is not bad means it playable for a while) To me there are very few not bad mmorpgs.

Honestly, i am thinking about goign back to daoc i don't know what else to do really.. i cannot go back. My favorite thing to do in daoc, in spare time, was help out noobs get them equiped and teach them to play, sounds odd but that is the kind of community daoc had.

I mean whens the last time in an mmorpg group of people came around equipped you, taught you, helped you etc.

(I did it becuase it was fun, but there was support for it (guild) because the more people playing our realm , and playign it well , the better our realm would be off , and anyoen could make/buy great equipment with ease in the game) .

ATM there are no real good mmorpgs: even when playign rift i think.... why don't i just go back to wow.. and really that is the truth. Rift doesn't have a end game pvp system in place nor the system that supports a spontanious pvp system in place (you will however, be ganked). But rift is a solid game, but so is wow.

I say try DDO. If you have and you don't like it, then ignore me.

It has a good community. I would say great, but there is a raid heavy crowd at endgame that if you fall into you could meet people that are not nice. However if you stick to the cool people, the community (from your frame of reference) will be outstanding. It is a lot of fun and people are usually very friendly to each other (voice chat Sunday morning coffee pajamas three teammates and a shit load of quests = good times).

Worth a shot if you haven't tried it. If you have and you didn't like it, don't go back.

In which case I would recommend LOTRO as it is a work of art. AoC is still looking pretty dull population wise but the game itself is magnificant.

I'm currently playing Rift right now, and out of all the MMO's I've play it has just as much grind as Aion.  So seeing that you've played Aion, if you can look past the grind, then Rift might be something to try.  I would compare it to the WAR/WOW/Aion, basically if they had a baby, it would be Rift. =)

EVE is a great game which has a 14 day trial, I believe.  It's a great space mmo, but there's one thing that you should know if you try it out, training for upgrades on your ship, go from minutes, to hours, to days, to weeks and so on. Of course this starts to happen the farther you get into the game, but it will happen.  I played it for a number of years and had a great joy in the game.

Black Prophecy a F2P space mmo, is a new game I just started playing last month into beta and I would have to say it's pretty great. It's like a new improved version of EVE, you upgrade you ship faster, the voice dialog of the npc's you work with and the story is actually quite nice, overall a solid game so far for me in my book.

Here's a video, that actually got me to wanting to try out the game that I saw on youtube.

The game is in Closed Beta if you have a http://www.mmorpgscene.com/ account, just do a search for Black Prophecy closed Beta and they will have a Beta key for you to try out the game.

    Wildstar (2013) & Elder Scroll Online (2013)

    Playing: Diablo 3, WOW, Far Cry 3 & X-Com.

Enjoyed: WOW 5 1/2 yrs, LOTRO 3yrs, GW 1/2yr, DFO 1yr, EVE Online 3yrs, and Huxley (Beta).

Failed to impress: GW2 3months, Tera Online 6 months (best combat system in any MMO I've played) STO 1/4yr, Aion 1/2yr, AoC 1yr, CO, Fallen Earth, DDO, EQ2 1/2yr, WAR 1/2yr, Lineage 2 and FF XI 1/2yr, FF XIV.

I actually ended up liking it and now im there to stay. So, im passing the word to you know and hopes you will enjoy.

No not all MMOs have good community because sometimes you will get into a guild on WoW and they will say it has good community but no one ever helps you or guides you.  Infact there are some guilds that will not even let new members talk in their GC.  WoW does not have good communtiy whatsoever unless you have played for a long time it can be difficult to get into a guild on WoW that is very helpful.  Also the outward communtiy on WoW can be downright nasty and verbally abusive tons of trolling and Blizzards custumer support and such are not very well thought of in the gaming community or the bisiness community.

If I were you I would research on the MMO threads and see what you think of the communtiy on the threads before joining hte game.  You can even find out good information at the BetterBusiness Bureau by looking up the company that makes the games itself they put links of reviews on it.

The one with the BEST community as far as working with each other and helping each other is sadly down at the moment.

DDO and LOTRO are what I would suggest atm.  They are free to play and people seem very helpful. BUt yeah I would definately research any game you are thinking about purchasing atm.

People are not giving the best reviews of Rift unless you are a new gamer they say if you are advanced you will probably not want to play this game for too long.  They say there is not a lot of content other than end game and then it is hard to get groups from what I hear for advanced dungeons and tehy say the expert which are = to WoW's heroic dungeons are all of the ones you leveled in rehashed.  Not much as far as variety from what I hear.

Im personally tired of reading about communities in games.

The world is full of wonderful, amazing, or stupid, completely idiotic crazy psycho a-holes. Every games community has a mix of everything.

If all you care about is a social community try Second Life or Planet Calypso.

Or just go to yahoo chat or something.

Other than that just google up "free mmo" and youll find a gigantic world of an insane amount of free games.

Most MMO communities have a mix of everything.  There are helpful vets and guilds and there are 1337 vets n guilds.  There are immature players and mature players.  Hardcore raiders, casuals and those who are very serious RPs into lore n such.  Painting with such a broad brush just makes you look foolish.

  • JohnnyMotrinJohnnyMotrin Member UncommonPosts: 439

Maybe I'm miss reading the past couple of post... However I'll say there can be huge differences in communities depending on what games you are moving on from.  Some games are very immature and non helpful while others are the exact opposite.  Telling somebody to go to Yahoo chat if they're looking for community is probably the most ignorant advice you can give someone on a website named MMORPG.com.

    Hey Anth, peeps,

Personally I am delighted you say the community is your first interest. It is after all not about gold, money, xp or levels. It is about people.

Best community I ever saw was in Ryzom - 200 people in a PvP fight simultaneously and all they did was compliment the opposition. Now that is impressive.

Your choice of game will probably depend largely on whether or not you are willing to get out of your comfort zone, or 'box'. I have the intention to blow up your box: the ingredients are nice enough but they are too much alike. I respectfully suggest you try some trials or F2P games that are *wildly* different.

The aforementioned Atlantica Online. Do not give up until you have a Monk (Beijng; around level 10).

City of Heroes/Villains - more game systems than you can even *begin* to think of and I suspect that half the inventions in MMORPG industry come from this title alone. A preposterous claim. Still....soooooooo many smart, new, enjoyable, logical, deeply tested systems. I shall not bore you - I have no affinity for superheroes but in this game, you do not need to.

EverQuest 2. Far less static than the original EQ, this game has a UI you can optimize for a month, lots of content, and unlike another title the gear is just as important but people don't talk about it: they talk about the quests. Different approach, different community. Both fun titles but EQ2 is more mature.

Dark Prophecy just launched (Europe version) but that's twitch-space-combat.

I am in the Age of Empires Online beta - highly amusing, some decent depth, and yes, it's an MMORTS with RPG elements (visiting another's city; co-op play etc.).

Go find some beta keys or free trials I would say :)

Hell's bell's, you could even try oldy-Asheron's Call, with over 110 expansions, it ugly but *boy* do they have a lot of content. And I do mean 'explore and find it'.

    Good luck,

    Lucas.

PS I would have mentioned Xsyon if it wasn't for the fact it *appears* right now to be rather dead; for the moment, for us, it's 'Xsyonara', alas.

Your level of igorance is outstanding. A game may have the most amazing quest system/storyline and/or top notch jaw-dropping graphics but without a decent community it amounts to not a lot of anything in my opinion.

    @Johnny
My sentiments entirely. Why come to a gaming community if you don't have an ounce of (game)community spirit?

  • PalebanePalebane Member RarePosts: 4,011

I'm waiting for the new releases. I really can't recommend any of the MMORPGs out right now besides EvE. And I've never even played that game, hehe. I've been playing TF2, Fallout 3, and King's Bounty recently.

Apparently you misunderstood me. Also there was zero ignorance in my previous post, nice troll tho.

Simple fact is you will never find a perfect community in a game unless its so small that every single player knows each other. There are nice people and jerk offs in every game just like in life.

I can easily say i loved the community in WoW but i know very well there are plenty of jerks there too.

I really can't imagine what to suggest to you... The games you listed that you have played are pretty much the cream of the crop of today's choices in MMORPG...  the only thing you specified that you are looking for is a great social community, and in all honesty, I've not found a good community to be a common factor in any of the games you listed.    Unfortunately, the only (mmorpg)games that I find to have great communities and a decent social-awareness (so to speak) are either :

    a) Difficult/Complex games that younger players don't play because of lack of interest, intelligence, patience, or attention span

example: EVE online, Perpetuum Online, FFXI, FFXIV, EQ1, UO, Darkfall, Fallen Earth

    or

    b) Nitch games that appeal mostly to the fanbase of a story/setting that existed before the game, and/or paralell to the game

example:  FFXI, FFXIV, Pirates of the Burning Sea, Lord of the Rings Online, Dungeons and Dragons Online

    or

    c) Older MMO's that still run with a small community of veterans that either roleplay, help new players join their community, or simply don't like the direction of new mmo design, and don't want to leave the genre completely so they settle for their old game(s)

example:  DAoC, Ultima Online, EQ1, FFXI

----- SO....  I don't think I can suggest any of the games from A, B, or C to you because I don't really know if you would enjoy them after playing the AAA titles you named.  If WoW, AOC, Aion and GW were your first experiences with mmorpg's, you may not be able to let go of the routine they may have instilled that you would consider MMO standards.  /shrug

[In my opinion] It comes down to this, The more a game is developed and marketted to MULTIPLE demographics, the more people you will have in said game. And with that kind of booming population of people with DIFFERENT interests, you will have more opportunities to interract with people who are not playing the game for the same reason you are.    You be the judge on if that is a good or bad thing, and then think about why you left the games you listed...

    Sorry for the wall.

This is not a troll, flame, or anything else worth banning me over. It is simply my pure opinion, and I have a right to share it.

Im playing this a bit to kill some time, but to the OP, try them all.  Especially the ones with a free trial. Cant hurt, since I think that the vast majority of those that read this site are transitioning from one game to the next.

It would help in these LFG posts if everyone always included their computer specs (or at least if its decent gaming desktop or a school laptop) and it also helps to know what keyboard and mouse is preferred and what he or she enjoyed most or least about the games mentioned.

My favorite game is Darkfall and I think its the ultimate best MMORPG out right now without a doubt in my mind but most MMORPG would disagree with me before even trying the game .. . especially with think they have tried the game since they did their worthless 14-day free trial (only calling it worthless because you pobably won't get to see much in 14 days). Most people have a regular keyboard and want to be able to eat a sandwich while they play and do not risk anything by getting up to go to the bathroom real quick. The UI is a bitch and can take awhile to setup but its worth it.
