I'm keeping my fingers crossed for World of Darkness. CCP seems to be the only company interested in putting out quality sandbox games that has the talent and money to do it.
I disliked Darkfall because it has no skillcap, they say that you don't need a class but everyone is basicaly the same class (warrior/mage/archer), using the same kind of weapons and the same spells.
I disliked Mortal Online because... it was too buggy.
I like EVE Online, but I cant stand to be on a space ship and all I see is stars 24hs a day.
I hope World of Darkness become a good MMO, I'm kinda sick of playing medieval fantasy mmo's.
I am very hopeful that Arche Age may be able to pull off a decent sandbox hybrid. Other than that, don't know really about a future Sandbox winner.
i gotta look at what's going on with arche age i suppose. Let's hope the "themepark" period of MMOs moves onto a "hybrid" era....i am looking for a game with longevity not an "end game'...cus they all seem to get there ..and guess what...it's boring..no substance or community.
hopefully there are more and more whiners like me and soon companies/devs will notice and will develop something for an overlooked audience(that will just keep getting bigger).
It's gotten some bad press, and I admit it's not unwarranted, but Earthrise has corrected many of it's launch issues. I don't think i'd recommend right now unless you want to buy into the potential and get a leg up for your gamble on the game but it really is quite a bit of fun (the combat is pure twitch and is 100% gun based which is a welcome relief in the MMO world). It has an exceptional crafting system.
I don't know, something to think about it. Like I said, I can't recommend the game quite yet but one of the next patches is supposed to have the Territorial Warfare system in it and after that the devs have said they plan to commit themselves entirely to client/GFX optimizations.
Still, as of right now it's just a lot of dev promises so don't say I didn't warn ya.

Earthrise is not a sandbox. It's a very pretty game world with some pve grind, some rather grindy crafting, and some team-oriented third person shooter action thrown in. For me, exploring the game world was worth the box fee, but as I'm not a console deathmatch junkie, that was the end of the road, and a lot of console junkies who wanted to like Earthrise complained of issues with lag and some say it's still bad at times. You might want to check the Earthrise forums before you go jumping into this one.
I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.

I consider the completely open and unrestricted skill system combined with the 100% player driven economy (there are not item-based loot drops aside from very poor quality items of very low tiers) enough to consider it a sandbox.
But you're right, the game has very few features at the moment. Which is why I said I wouldn't recommend right now but if the OP is willing to gamble on some good post-launch patching it might be worth that gamble. It seems like you just saw Earthrise in my post and then didn't read anything else I said :-

Wasn't trying to jump all over your post. But I am still quite sad about how Earthrise is shaping up. I check the forums once in awhile to see if any sand is getting added, but so far, nothing.
Those qualities you mentioned do not qualify it as a sandbox for me, but I understand people's definitions differ. To me, a sandbox is more than activities centered around shooting each other all day and it's about more than crafting weapons and armor to wield and wear while shooting people. It's about being able to choose a path that might not involve shooting anyone at all. It's about choosing to do things in the game that don't involve spilling blood. It's about associations that are more complex and freeform than a pvp clan system.
Earthrise is the prettiest game I've ever run around in, but after playing it, I could never call it a sandbox. Xsyon's graphics aren't nearly as good, and it's combat has issues too. But there's something unmistakeably sandbox about Xsyon, and I enjoy the hell out of playing it, bugs, full loot pvp, and all. I'm worried anyone looking for a sandbox that isn't thinking specifically and fondly of MO and Darkfall is not going to agree with your definition.

Well there is this cool game called Shores of Hazeron I found a few weeks ago. Its a great science fiction sandbox game that is basically a spore/civilization/star trek type game. It is really fun, i am glad I found it as it is the sandbox MMO that i've been looking for years. Despite it being in a early beta release, it has a great, active, and helpful playerbase with the game receiving updates + support weekly. You should check it out !

Same here. I put faith on CCP.

World of Darkness and ArcheAge are ones to watch in the future.
For me, I'm enjoying Mortal Online.
As far as the sentiment in the original post is concerned, just as now, I don't believe there will ever be a game that satisfies everyone.

ArcheAge is the only sandbox game worth waiting for.

funny u mentioned looking at the forums..i was just there..lol
and yea seems like u said...it's a shooter game with a twist. instead of cature the flag..it's like capture a factory i guess....
might be more in depth but didn't fint the right twist to make me want to buy it.
