Alright guys, I'm getting started in this Mortal thing.

Narcin1Narcin1 Member Posts: 145

Right now I am currently downloading the client so I can start my trial, if I enjoy this game I have full intentions of buying it (my girlfriend will not find out about these charges).  It looks provocative to say the least, I've seen mixed views but there does seem to be a representative community that does, in fact, enjoy this game.  I like 1st person games, it looks like an MMO in the form of Oblivion. I will have to see what this shiznit is about when I start.

Anyway, I want to get started with some sort of purpose if I can. If any group of MO players want to take me under their wing and recruit an ally, then I will be fond of joining you.  I have a lot of MMO experience, although this game seems to be very different so I doubt my experience will be relevent.

I'm thinking of either rolling a Thursar, Khurite, or sheevra character...of course if I need to change my race then that's not a problem. Anyway, if you want another wood chopper or ally then let me know what's up. I'll check the thread so just leave a reply or send me a message at jcmphillips@gmail.com.

I think it would be lot more productive to either ask on official forums, read the official guild recruitment channel or simply ask in the official IRC: all that info can be found on the official site.

Meh. there's no one really on the official forums, here I suppose this is a general discussion forum, so I figured I could just post here.  I usually get a lot of response in MMORPG.com forums.

There are people on the official forums Narcin. Trust me.

Your best bet is to also post in the looking for guild section of the official forums. You will learn the most through a guild as the game has a very steep learning curve.

Welcome, and I hope you enjhoy it. like you said, there are alot that likes Mortal Online. And like others said, join the official forums for questions sicne you get better answers over there most of the times (valid answers that is compared to here sometimes)!

The population you talk about enjoying this game is in the low hundreds, after they sold over 15,000 clients minimum.

Play the trial and make your decision based on the game as it is. Do not listen to those promising the earth in some future patch, or that everything will be working fine soon.  What they claim will probably never happen, it hasn't so far despite the game being out for nearly a year.

    Welcome to the game!

There really are a lot of helpful and knowledgeable people on the official forums - that's probably a really good place to start.  Definitely check out the Guilds Looking for players sections as well, if you haven't already.

Oh, and the Guides section also has a ton of useful information:

Bad idea, to play in this game.

It`s abominable technical support in this game and many other problems. For example - not all builds has rest-skill at the beginning of game, and, if you`ll die before learning such a skill, the game will end for your avatar. And you will not find information about this problem in the in-game FAQ, although there are plenty of other useless crap. Add to this: many-many bugs, twisted interface, inflated system requirements for the awful graphics, so - you will find Mortal online ) Save your money! Pay them for the real world - not for this damned.

good for you and i hope you have lot of patience.

keep you expectationts low and you'll enjoy this game. it is different, innovative and it can be fun but it can also be very frustrating with the lack of help and thing that dont work as they should. i highly suggest getting into a nube friendly guild asap ( Talar Matar is the official new player's guild but any guild will do ) since this game does not help you out at all and you are pretty much left to discover things on your own. it is incredibly easier to play this game as part of a guild, as opposed to trying the solo thing, since a guild will be able to answer most of your questions plus help you out with armors, weappons, horses, etc.

the most important rule of MO is" if you dont wanna lose it dont take it out of storage". be ready to die and loose all the stuff you carry many, many times. enjoy....

wile there are a few similarities between the 2 games (mainly the first person combat view) MO is very different from Oblivion. MO is a pvp centered game wile Oblivion is exclusively pve. the gathering and crafting is very different, there is no taming in Olivion, there are no quests/story in MO, there is no fast travel in MO, there is no ghost system in Oblivion, etc, etc.

wile you could say MO is the closest mmo resembling Oblivion they are different on so many levels. if you go into MO thinking it's an Oblivion mmo you will be sorely disappointed.

MO it's innovative in it's direction and feel. it is very different from 99% of mmos with it's lack of levels and quests, and wile perhaps it has taken bits and pieces from other mmos and  single player games it's pretty much the only one of it's kind ( i still consider DF as a sort of weird hybrid). not for everyone i agree but an extremely unique game.

Hard feelings - not bad for the mmo, but we`ve seen it in Roma Victor. MO - its`s a mix-game in it`s mmo-side. Well, conceptual combination is not so simple thing, but also not innovative.

And, at all, is that game - realization an innovative idea that life is hard? :) How originally! Fresh warriors have arrived with his money, yeah.

this sounds interesting to me in an odd, masochistic sense... I may try this after I stop biting the sore on my lip.

There's a free trial available, so there's no harm in trying it.

Also, keep in mind that the first expansion, entitled Dawn, is currently scheduled to come out in the middle of May.

I had a very bad impression after first downloading the trial.  I was alone in  a town and the interface felt clunky.  Had no idea what to do.  Ran around for a while very slowly, then logged out.  Good thing I tried it again a few days later.

I rolled another char in a busier town and started to figure out what was going on.  Got familiar with some skill trees and found myself wanting to tame something.  The whole ambiance of the game started to grow on me.   I like not immediately getting shoved a task of killing 10 somethings then talk to so-and-so.

A week later after running out of skill points, I subbed and am having a lot of fun.  It's exactly the type of mmo I was looking for.

I also like how your skill points are capped so that players are all different.  If you kill something and dont have any butchery skills, you have to find a butcher to sell it to.  There's a lot of interdependence with other players.  I like what what MO is trying to do although there isn't a huge market for it.  They are definitely not looking for the easy buck by catering to the general populace.  I find it to be a niche game that will appeal to many.  Especially those like myself who have fond memories of the original UO.

However be warned that it might be initially overwhelming and quite a learning curve.  People who aren't good at using google will have to find someone who is helpful and ask a lot of questions.

Also, you have to learn to bank your valuables and bank often.  Essentially, there are no rare or precious items that aren't easily replaceable.  Coupled with that, no place is 100% safe and you need to start off with the mentality that you will die and lose stuff.  It's just that kind of game.  But once you make that adjustment, you might find yourself having a good time like myself.

If you go into this game expecting something easy on all levels you will be disappointed. If you do some research and expect it to be difficult on all levels you are more likely to enjoy it.

-They are updating the UI to flash in the middle of May and a whole UI revamp the following patch.

I love Mortal because its the anti-themepark.

I have to say I'm loving the game at present. For years I have been looking for a game that gave me the same feeling as UO did back in the day. None have come close except for Darkfall and MO. Unfortunately I don't have the time or patience to deal with the horrendous grind in Darkfall. MO seems to be much more my style. I haven't been this addicted to an MMO in a long long time.

  • RohnRohn Member UncommonPosts: 3,730

I agree with Angrymime, Hipster, and Anubisan above.  The game does have a learning curve, but that's part of what makes it such an enjoyable departure from the mainstream games.  It's the type of game I want to play.
