Yes there are a few people here. The pseudo-permenant residents are still in-game. Also, from what I have seen there are a number of peple taking advantage of the new free-to-play trials. I would have to say, come join us and make your own desiscion as to wheather there are enough people.
I was interested in this game, but decided to see how it panned out before spending my cash (particularly after getting stung on Earthrise). Is it worth looking at?

You can play for free now. Just skill up in the beginner area then head to the mainland. No restrictions on moving around. Only restriction for f2p is cap of 125 on your skills. which will take some time to reach anyway.

You can trial the game till you reach lvl 125, top lvl is still 250. So you will get a good idea of the game before you need to pay anything.
I believe that you can keep playing with different skills lvling them to 125 as well.
I played a little more today I found lot's of old friends. Sylan is actually crowder, everywhere players =P I guess the free trial is working as intended ^^
I played this game just after it came out, think one of my toons even has a 'special" beta title, but I gave up shortly after it went "live". Seems at that time the game attracted mostly "care bear" types and crafters, could never find anyone to help with running some of the harder quests.---but tons were digging in the dirt and crafting. Is it still the same??? It was a good little game with tons of potental but I left for WoW , then RoM and now Rift. Not really big on crafting and harvesting puts me to sleep, so some honest input would be a help before I use my gaming time checking it out.

This is a game that is primarily geared toward crafting, with even the drops (on mainland) being materials to craft better gear than almost everything else in the game.
The stuff that is not included in the almost everything else would be the items that you can purchase with faction points. So there is hope for those that are primarily pvp orientated.
I started in 2007, so I am not sure if it is different from what you experienced in beta, other than there is only one starter island now, called Silan, which will guild you through the basics, but it is not the mainland.

On wednesday night there were over 30 new peeps on Silan, can't say for the ML though. Pretty friendly bunch.
