Everyone claims this game, and everything else, is a WoW clone when WoW itself copies from other games... If they were truly WoW clones, then there'd be nothing to copy to WoW.
Here's just a few examples that I can think of from the top of my head, keep in mind that other games may have had these features first and I'm not claiming the listed games to be the true first... Only basing these on the fact that I've seen the said features in other games before I saw them in WoW.
1. Achievements (Warhammer Online)
2. Titles (Warhammer Online)
3. Guild Leveling (Warhammer Online)
4. Stacking Dailies for Casuals (Rift)
5. Guild Quests (Rift)
Number 4 wasn't exactly copied by WoW. In patch 4.1 they allow you to get bonus Valor points for the first 7 random dungeons for that week rather than having to do 1 each day. Rift's system is better IMO because it doesn't only pertain to dungeon dailies.
Feel free to add more to the list.

When someone says something is a WoW clone they are refering to the feel and the big picture of the game. Everyone knows that WoW was not the first on most of its features, but when a game comes around with 80% same features as WoW, or when you play it you feel like you could be playing WoW, thats what makes a WoW clone.
People dont go around saying "This feels like an EQ clone" very often because the game FEELS like WoW even if it has eq features.
The above sums it up well... Plus, it seems the bulk of your experience is with Rift and WO. EQ 2 had that entire list in production before those games were on a storyboard. WoW actually had aspects of that list long before those games were out as well.
If you really want to boil it down, MUDs had anything and everything youre likely to see in an MMO and *all* of these games are just attempting to capture the experience of table top games.
The point is that "WoW clone" means the dev team, at some point, *clearly* sat down and tried to figure out how they "lure over" some of WoWs 11M subs by capturing, and ideally improving upon, the "essence" of WoW. THATS the real point.
And at the end of the day, who really gives a crap anyway? It's a terribly juvenile argument to talk about "ripoffs" and "copying", etc. The second automobile in production "copied" the fact that the first had wheels. Should that have not happened and instead we either had 1 automobile to choose from or others that attempted to run on triangles or squares? Pretty stupid right? Well same thing here...
Just think of WoW Clone as Themepark MMO, people use WoW clone as it's an easy reference that everyone can easily relate to...at least your typical MMOer. I myself and many have never played EQs or UO but have played WoW extensively and familiar with it's features. I agree the WoW clone terminology is incredibely annoying and inaccurate but it's there and will continue to be there.

There is a reason comparisons are made to WOW, because it is the most popular in its genre. Dam it has happened in every field of endeavour man has ever known. It is not an issue.

I knew very well what was meant by the words "WoW Clone". What I was hoping to prove is that while other games get rediculed when some of their features are simlar to WoW... WoW gets no such redicule when copying things from other games.
I gotcha tk, and I agree. But are you gonna compare Olds or Ford with more recent cars? Obviously the latter.

^.
The reason the phrase is used is because WoW, from a business perspective, was the first one to spin the assets of the genre so phenomenally right.
That's why people won't call future WoW-clones "RIFT clones". RIFT is doing ok(*) but not so well that people would invest years or hundreds of millions into cloning it.
(*) (happy medium between the fanboys and the ghost-town people. However I don't play, I hated the game in beta.).

"WOW clone" is used as a point of reference when making comparisons between MMOs of recent and current times. WOW, as we know, is the culmination of features from earlier MMOs, so why not use the most popular MMO as a reference point. Since it is the most played Western MMO, it is the MMO that is most familiar in the MMO collective mind.
good point well made, there really is no argument other than that unpleasant sense that people feel somehow and inexplicably hard done by it.

You are behind in the times. Rift isn't a WoW clone. WoW is Rift Lite(TM)
Nice list, but not the right games...
1 Achievements - EQ2 was earlier than WAR with this
2. Titles - Lineage II started this way before most games - In the past (2005) clanleader could only set titles, later you could set your own title.
3. Guild leveling - Again Lineage II was one of the first with this (since release)
4. Stacking dailies - No comments, don't care about themepark stuff like that. Do a quest once is fun, twice is okay, trice and more is BORING
5. Guild Quests - Once more Lineage II started this AFAIK
Basically, I don't know why this topic even is on the RIFT forums. Should be at least in the WoW forums, if not in the general MMORPG.com pub ;-)
Agreed, if any of you have ever had an original idea, don't bother raising your hand cause you are lieing.

Many of the features you mention existed in MUDs before EQ and UO.
However WoW clone doesn't really mean what you are suggesting, it is about the basic gameplay. WoW stole a lot of things from a lot of games but the basic combat model, talent trees and quest based leveling gave it a distinct feel that really was nothing like say EQ or AC or UO or DAOC etc. Most games that have followed WoW really just feel like a re-skinned version of the same game and that includes Rift and some of the games that came out around the same time retooled themselves to be more like WoW (EQ2 is an example).
Oh God, quit saying things like this. I get it, I really do. We all do.
If I said to you "I invented the billboard.", you'd say "Billboards are just giant business cards. If I claimed to invent web graphic ads, you say they're just "Billboards on the internet".
You're certainly not being original by posting this. People do come up with interesting ideas that something nearly-unrelated inspired or they may feel that there was no inspiration but a spark of a thought.
You and I waste time with posts like these..
