I play WoW/EQ2 and various other games around the house. Played the beta and really liked the skill system. I didn't buy it cause I knew something would be disappointing and from what I read I was right. Lack of content/dungeons and stuff to do besides craft...

So after a while, I look back and people are raving about Saga of Ryzom! So what makes this game better than others? Besides the skill system. I like PvE and PvP... I like treasure hunting and raids. Tell me a bit about this game, im going to DL the 7 day trial and try it also... But I dunno how far ill get in 7 days....

EDIT: Can you reset your skills?

There is some nice posts in thread
for example. World, community and exploration factors are ones that I like in addition to crafting. Storyline has started to rumble in last weeks and there might be really interesting times ahead :) Also, outposts should be coming at next chapter and those look like very interesting.

Free trial should be 14 days with credit card.

There has been some skil resets after major patches but not after release. Maybe we will get reset when they get ready major changes to ranged combat. There is plenty of skill points later in game, so don't worry.

You might like boss hunts (there are low lvl bosses too) for excellent and supreme loot. Outpost wars probably too but that will be in future. There is no instances at least yet. Nevrax just announced instance creation tools for players for winter 2005 but that is still in distant future. I hope we will get some Nevrax made instances before releasing tools to players :)

Ok, so what are the "types" of quality of weapons/armor in the game? Like unique/rare/magic? what?

And can any mob drop rare equip or just bosses? Also what is the level cap?

And I keep reading about leveling up certain skills by attackin with certain things. Liek magic trains magic, melee trains melee... I dont understand this system. Can I infinitely train magic/melee/range?

So there is PvP in the game? If I kill a player, can he drop money or items? What are the penalties for PvP? And can you kill anyone? or are there PvP zones?

There is light, medium and heavy armor. 4 playable races have own designs for each item type in 3 different variation (basic, medium, high quality). Same goes for weapons but there is more different types of weapons than armors. Items have different grades: basic, fine, choice, excellent and supreme.

Most stuff is player crafted with few notable exceptions (high lvl npc bosses drops items). Animal and monster bosses drop excellent and supreme grade materials that can be turned into items by skilled crafter. Each item in game has unique stats depending on crafting materials used. Best crafters can make e.g. swords that have maximum damage and hit speed. That kind of equipment requires boss mob materials and is really rare. Currently there is auction of some items that are really unique in game world, only single instance exists on whole server link to auction

Normal mobs will drop basic and fine grade materials. Some of those may be needed in secret crafting recipies :) Generally, basic and fine materials are good for training crafting and crafters pay good money for those.

Crafters can add magical enchantments to crafted items.

Level cap is currently 250 in every skill. You start with 4 basic skills fight, magic, foraging and crafting. When you advance levels these skills will split to skill trees. E.g. magic splits at lvl 21 to offensive and defensive magic. When you use skills in combat you will gain xp in those skills. You can raise every single skill to 250 without penalties (well, that would take years...).

There is PvP. Looting loser is not possible in any case.

    1) Duels anytime anywhere. Both parties must accept. Loser gets death penalty if no one heals him after duel.

    2) PvP arena (Matis arena). Free for all. No death penalty.

    3) PvP regions. Contested free for all zones. Best crafting materials can be found from these regions :) These regions are medium to high level areas.

    4) Faction wars. Storyline has progressed and first clashes has been fought between Kami and Karavan armies in events during couple of last weeks. Karavan God Jena is prophesized to arrive with some nasty storm troopers soon :)

    5) Serious guild wars will come in next chapter (major content patches). These will be fought over guild build fortresses that should give some unique benefits for owning guild.

First off this game has such a high rating because some of the players found out about this site and have made it their goal to come here and hype it to death. They also will distort the truth and not tell you the bad parts of the game. I won't be like that. Here is the truth.

If you are looking for a game with raids, treasure hunting, loot, and decent pvp this game will not give you that.

Each of the 4 races has a npc group that drops one set of armor. This is the only loot drop in the game, only raid type of activity, and the only treasure to be found.

The pvp in the game is a joke. First off you can only do pvp in certain areas. This would be fine if there were actually people in those areas. If you do manage to find someone to fight you don't gain or loose anything from the battle. To make matters worse if you do attack someone in the pvp areas chances are that they wil scream and yell how they are neutral and shouldn't be attacked. The majority of the game population doesn't want pvp and will do everything they can to make your pvp experience as empty as possible.

    Concerning the following:
    4) Faction wars. Storyline has progressed and first clashes has been fought between Kami and Karavan armies in events during couple of last weeks. Karavan God Jena is prophesized to arrive with some nasty storm troopers soon :)

    5) Serious guild wars will come in next chapter (major content patches). These will be fought over guild build fortresses that should give some unique benefits for owning guild.

#4 The game has been going for 10 months. In the past 2 weeks they have had a few events talking of one of the factions coming to take things over. This is the first time the story has moved anywhere. You read into that what you want.

#5 Yes, serious guild wars should come in the next chapter. The last chapter/update was in Janurary. Right now there is no set date for the next update just that they are testing it. So it's likely that it will be July or August before they get into game. Even then expect another month for them to work properly. At which point the 10 guilds of the game will have their guild wars.

You should also be aware that unlike WoW, factions in the game do mean nothing. There is no benefit to getting better ones. The only time bad ones hurt you is if you have REALLY bad faction levels. For example if you have a -89 faction (-100 is the lowest) with the Karavan, you can still walk up to them, buy teleport tickets and have them treat you like a friend.

Each of the 4 races has a npc group that drops one set of armor. This is the only loot drop in the game, only raid type of activity, and the only treasure to be found.

The loot is actually the best I have seen in any game and one the one that has the most sence. How on earth can a rat drop a dagger orso. Nothing of this in ryzom you get the mats from the creature (the eyes, the horns,...) with dose you can then craft you're weapons or you sell the mats whatever.
This game is different, its not the old treasure hunting system that makes it cool. If you want uber weapons you'll have to work for it, not just kill a big boss mob. You need also a good crafter + additional mats to make it even better... In this game you actually have to think if you want some real good stuf, not just brainless kill some mobs. That makes this game special in my opinion.

The pvp in the game is a joke. First off you can only do pvp in certain areas. This would be fine if there were actually people in those areas. If you do manage to find someone to fight you don't gain or loose anything from the battle. It's true there isn't much pvp, but the outposts are soon to be implented. And they should give a whole new dimension to the pvp experience in the game. There are actually pvp minded people... (see the various events in matis arena) but don't know exactly about that

    Concerning the following:
    4) Faction wars. Storyline has progressed and first clashes has been fought between Kami and Karavan armies in events during couple of last weeks. Karavan God Jena is prophesized to arrive with some nasty storm troopers soon :)

Maybay true, but in the future it should be implented much quicker. The things happening last week make me really excited and it brings some tension between the races

10 guilds? There are a lot more guilds in the game who all want an outpost so there will be some battles to conquer them ;)

Actually faction does make a difference. The quest you can do are determined by your faction (fame actually). If you have low karavan fame, you can't do the caravan quest. But if you really want to do them, you can raise you're karavan fame and do the big quests if your fame gets high enough. This is one of the good things of this game I think. You can do whatever you want. No predefined classes, perfectly adaptable skills, ho predefined faction... that's cool you really can play the game on you're own way. Not just following some predefined story.

EDIT: someone managed to post a reply before me. Consider sleepyguy as "previous poster" :)

I guess every game out there have players who have played game and disappointed as they have had too high or unrealistic expectations and start hating game and try to ruin it for everyone.

I give this reply only because I was just called a liar. I would not have bothered reply for that kind of whining otherwise. I do not see why I should concentrate on shortcomings and all negative aspects. I like to play game for good aspects there. That said , you should notice me mentioning that there is no instances, only few item drops, storyline starting to go forward lately and outposts are not yet in game. Where I am lying or distorting the truth?

Quite contrary, you are distorting the truth in many respects:

"only raid type of activity, and the only treasure to be found". There many other similar encounters like boss mobs with guards and kitin caves. Even more would be merrier, of course.

About PvP. Would you not like to hear your victims scream? It is true that majority of players are quite peaceful but there has been guild wars etc. Usually screaming comes when fully armed individual kills unarmed harvesters. So far there has not been enough to be gained in PvP, people has been doing it for fun mostly. I guess that these faction and guild wars will add to pvp in game a lot.

About storyline. You seem to forget quite many storylines that there have been, especially with current event crew. True, lately there has been a real boom in event related action. Maybe this is due to new event manager toolset they got few months ago? Maybe a faction war is the introduction to outposts?

About outposts. True, your time estimates may prove to be quite accurate. Did I say that they are going to be in June or July? Np, I did not say that. Have you forgotten your own enthusiams over outposts after seeing the demo? I think good is worth waiting for and I am waiting to see those at test server soon (If I am accepted as tester for outpost mass tests).

Truth is that previous poster has not been playing for long time, knows only old terminated server history, just came back, has not been participating story line events but still whining about them, is just upset about recent events and deleted his character so he would not be able to come back. I feel sorry for him, really.

The loot is not the best of any game because it's not really loot. When someone says they want a game where they can get loot, they aren't asking to get animal parts. They are asking for a game where you kill something and it drops gold, weapons, armor, and so on. And it's not entirely real. There are many NPC tribes who have some really cool weapons. You kill them and you don't get their armor or weapons, you get a bit of money.

And faction has little to no effect. While it is true that you won't be offered some tasks if your fame (Ryzom's faction system) isn't high enough, that rarely the case. The fame requirements for getting tasks aren't something you have to work to get, most of the time you already have the required fame levels. The arguement of fame not having a effect being good as it allows players to choose how the story goes is BS also. That arguement would hold some weight if players actually used the system to form a story, they don't. Instead the majority of the game population states they are neutral, no matter what their fame levels are.

To the original poster, one thing you really need to pay attention to is that the people hyping this game will tell you "it's coming" or "the next chapter should make things happen". That's because right now, there is squat for pvp, squat for guild wars, squat for faction wars, and squat for missions/quests.

One other little known fact about this game is that the npc's don't say anything. That's right, they have nothing to say. There are no chat trees, there are no characters, there are no npcs that tell the history of the game. So you have a town full of NPC characters and none of them say anything beyond "Hi, I'm xxxxx. My job is...".

In it's current state Ryzom will not offer you what you are looking for, that is the unhyped truth. Eventually it may but telling you to play on the possibility that it might offer what you want is very unhonest.

There is the encyclopedia for the story isn't it... not just talking to npc's... and yeah you're right thats not implented yet, and yeah i'm saying this will be implented soon and thats because I believe in it. Let them finish their code clean up and have a look how things will chance then

Excuse me? I was an active subscriber from Sept 22nd 2004 (launch) until this week. I played on a regular basis during that entire time. Having played for 10 months I know what is in the game, what the history of updates and features is, what is planned, and how things are run. I also know more than most players because I actually spoke to the people behind the game at E3. I quit because I got tired of playing based upon things that might be coming in the future. If someone is asking what the game has, they aren't asking what it will have.

Trust me if the game had everything that it's suppose to there would be a decent game population. The game would be pretty good to. The fact is that it doesn't and in it's current state the only thing that make it sound exciting are "its comings".

The encylopedia was suppose to be one of two big features in chapter 2. Chapter 2 went live on Jan 6th. As of June 7th, it's still not implimented. There has been no word from Nevrax when it will be implemented either. Again all of your hype is based upon "it will be". The game in it's current state will not provide what this person is looking for.

If he is looking for a game like WOW then he indead wont find it. If he wants something new and different I think ryzom is a pretty good choice. At the time he is familiar with the game and on a decent level, outpost will be there and then the fun can really begin ::::39::
Although before outposts it already a lot of fun to... that's my opinion, I like it, so don't flame me ::::39::::::29::

I'm flaming you or anyone. I am simply pointing out that the way you responded to the original poster and the way others are portraying this game is very misleading. If someone asks if a game has certain qualities then you should be honest and tell them if it does or doesn't.

Am I against Ryzom and people playing it? No, not at all. Ryzom has many great qualities. The game world is very well done and detailed. The graphics and art style pretty much kill everything else out there. The way they have the quartering and creature parts to work with crafting is another really good aspect of the game. The skill system is also a really amazing aspect of the game.

But to tell someone it has a decent pvp system, it has loot, it has raids, it has treasures is simply not true.

Ignore the bitter ex-player, he knows not of what he speaks and is just throwing a piss-fit because he wasn't invited to an invite-only storyline event on the server.

Yes, ignore me. Sign up for the game and see for yourself that I've posted the honest facts about the game. And others have posted misleading statements.

  • RohenRohen Member Posts: 143

I didn't made up what I told there! That's the truth. Maybay I understand the 'loot' wrongly (English isn't my first language) but I think I told what the loot is all about in Ryzom. Not tha weapons but the parts to make the weapons. And probably I understanded raid wrong also... srr.

But if you wanne know if this game is any good, there is the trial and see for yourself. (thats not you I'm speaking to sleepy). And maybay you like it, maybay you don't, maybay you get hooked but after months of playing leave the game because your proud that's hurt.

Maybe because I got confused with the names and gave it to the wrong person. The only other person that hadn't left long ago was a player who logs on maybe once a week.

Their development is still a mess. The only improvement has been that they answer more questions.

That responce was to someone who claimed I got to speak to the exec direct David Cohen. I did not. I did speak with a dev though.

Attacking those who play the game? Why because I said the reason Ryzom has such a high score is because the players have started to come here and inflate the score? Is that not true? Because I said that the players are hyping the game and giving misleading statements? I think I've shown that is true.

You must be on something strong. Players who hadn't reviewed the game were encouraged to write honest and subjective reviews based on their own personal experience with this game, not yours...

Is that to hype a game? If you think so, then you clearly mean that this game is crap, and that we who actually like it for what it is, are wrong. Now that's just plain stupid.

Wow, you really are bitter, and I can't really see how these discussions will cheer you up, so I recommend you take a walk outside.

come on Raynes, u got bored on the SoR forums because we didnt all jump up and agree with u moaning so u come here and do it?

I had a lot of respect for your views and passion for Ryzom at one point, but it's all gone now. Move on, find a game u like and stop trying to ruin other peoples fun. Is it so hard to understand that we like the game, we are happy playing it? You are not, fair enough. I think u have said that enough times, dont u?
