It's because of some demented irony that I'm here. The horrible reputation that this game has garnered has, instead of driving me away, gotten me all the more interested.
I am curious, however, as to how the new player inflow looks. Are there still a good number of players picking up this game? As in many new players showing up in the lowbie zones?
I ask this, partially because I'm interested in the game, but also because of how I'm sizing it up (I like to assess games, even when I may not want to play them). To be honest, the launch and crash of this game has been one of the most interesting in the history of MMO's as far as I've seen. The way players have reacted, you know, the glass half full camp and the glass half empty camp? Along side the way Square has handled itself, it's been a lot of fun to watch. Or read, I suppose...
So, I ask any current players. Even with the negativity surrounding this game, is there still a decent buy in occuring? Or is the game pretty much reserved to those who have been playing since early days and stuck around?
(I understand this can be a hard thing to judge, given it varies by server, but I'm not looking for cold hard facts. I'm just looking for what people see, or what they feel is happening.)
Thanks for any input!

It definitely is difficult to determine. Although, There is always players around in the lowbie zones. Levels 1-10..pretty much solo to make it go faster but after that groups are abundant. The best option is joining a few LSs...always someone to group with there. Whether it is the fact that you can play one class to max level and start over at level 1 on another class but the same character or there are new people coming in, there are players at the newbie areas.
Ah, that had slipped my mind. Yeah, leveling different classes would keep the lowbie zone at least somewhat active with or without new players.
I also imagine there has to be some buy in due to the subject matter being such a prominent IP. I'd like to find out if there are people currently buying the game for other reasons though.
Ehh...It's still for sale at the Best Buy near my house so I suppose people are buying it.
Ha, fair enough observation! I've seen it at the Best Buy near my place as well. Thanks for the input Jonesing, appreciate it! Hopefully some other people will chime in at some point as well.
I actually bought this myself a little over a month ago, on sale. I played from the end of alpha through the betas, so I was aware of what I may have been getting myself into.
As folks recommend, I found a linkshell quickly. You can solo, but after a point it becomes very tedious and lonely. We have new people that have joined since I started, but only a few. More common are the people that started at release and are now returning to see what the changes have wrought.
It's definitely not without its problems, and even the most avid players will candidly admit that. However, it is fairly unique amongst the current MMOfferings out there. Sweeping changes loom, and I'm slightly afeared that, given time, it'll become more WoWish. There's been talk of an LFG tool, possibly a party assembling tool (though I think whether or not it would be cross-server is still fairly speculative), and I believe the Devs have confirmed the addition of quest hubs, though the nature of these quests is still ambiguous.
Personally, I enjoy it, and with the no pay to play price tag, youd be hard pressed to find a better deal. Graphics are amazing, music is great, community is generally helpful and active. If you don't play it now, I'd at least keep an eye on the title. Lots of potential here, and Yoshi-P seems dedicated to the harrowing task set before him.
Hope this helped.
I'll certainly be watching this title. I may give it a try if I stumble across a really solid deal on it. The no subscription extension is alluring, I'll admit. And I believe you're right, it does seem "different."
Also, I can certainly see why people would return. I had a chance to read some of the developer letters on the Lodestone. The enthusiasm shown in the letters and actual content of the patches sound good. Of course, I'm speaking from ignorance having not played the game. However, I think it's evident that there are a lot of people out there still hoping for this game to make a full recovery. This is nice to see. If those people weren't there to check back in, the game would never have the opportunity to face a second judgement.
Thanks Seguleh!
it seems like the developers are intent on imrpovong the console aspect of the game in regard to controls and UI right now. Ive heard good Big imrpovements are coming for the PC side closer to the end of the year. This may sway your choice of platform.
Im waiting for the PC imrpovments as i cant stand playing a mmorpg with a controller.
