Hey all,
I've been recently trying out the trial in the hopes of finding a decent game to keep me busy until some of the upcoming big releases ( and possibly fall back on if they dissapoint ).
I've been greatly enjoying Tortage so far. The game is different enough to feel fresh and new which is something much needed in this genre. The combination of a more gritty and low-fantasy world with fatalities, the melee system and the art style is a nice change.
But I remember a lot of reports from the time of release that after Tortage it goes downhill very fast.
I was just wondering if this was still the case? How's the rest of the game world when compared to Tortage?

There are a few differences of course as Tortage is built more like a SP RPG style to give you a nice story mode experience, and post Tortage is built more like MMOs in general, but its still pretty good, even though most of the voiceovers stop (Destiny quests and some selected only)
Conclusion is that 20+ is actually much better now, IMO even better as Tortage is a little short really, and 20+ is so much much more.
Enjoy!
The 20-30 are ok, however the 30-50 your grinding a lot of vila content to make up for lack of content.
However I am considering going back if soe dont do something soon.
? That is so 2008.
No villa grinding needed anymore, enough content for any level range with the added content of RotGS and the multiple areas they've added over the years. Unless you want to do villas of course, there's some addictiveness to them.

There is quite a lot of content for you to level up 1-80. There's certainly no gap between levels 30-50 as the poster above says. The only "empty" spot is rather around level 68-72, which you can either make up by rerunning villas a few times or by free levels you receive periodically (1 level per 4 days). Once you reach level 78+ for Khitai the amount of content is enormous. And it's not only about quantity (overall, there isn't really that much content), but the quality of content in AoC is above everything - especially in Khitai. The quests in Khitai are pretty much unique to this genre, superbly designed AA level 80 char advancement, beatifully crafted dungeons and zones - assuming, you have the PC for it.
REALITY CHECK
I have an active account and have leveled several characters. I haven't had to go into a Vila once. Once again I think people are letting their initial experiences cloud their judgement of how the game currently is.
OP, after Tortage the game is pretty much like every other mmo. In that you can quest all the way to level cap. There are some interesting quests and not so interesting ones. If you can ignore the loading screens between areas the world is breath taking, that is where the beauty of the game lies.
I made a return to AoC earlier this year and still can never understand why people always complain about the game post-Tortage. Sure you don't get voiceovers or taken by the hand through a story, but the good parts are still there - the setting, combat, massive open world and gritty low fantasy setting.
If you have already experienced the post lv 20 areas I can highly recommend getting the Rise of the Godslayer expansion for the Gateway to Khitai zone which is 20-40 ish. I played through this and really enjoyed it as a change from Khopshef, Conall's and Zelata. Different feel, quite a nice story and setting, and epic in scale. I took some screenshots of the sunset from high on some cliffs which are some of the best I have from the game. I love the rolling dust clouds too, which give it the whole desolate outlands feel.
However, I did make it to 40 and then was kind of lost. Groups were hard to come by for the dungeon (Sanctum of the Burning Souls) and the group quests I had and I ended up playing less until I stopped completely. Not sure if that's just me (because I already have an 80 Dark Templar from ages ago) or if it was the game or content petering out a bit after that. Certainly I find Fields of the Dead, Eiglophian Mountains etc. to be more pedestrian than some of the earlier zones (perhaps because it's those or Tarantia until you hit 60 and can go to Thunder River).
The key is to talk to people really. While there aren't a lot of obvious groups, there are a lot of alts. As a level 80 I helped three groups last night complete lower level content. Took a group of guildies and a random person from global through Sanctum. Then followed up with helping some lvl 25s with epic mobs in Connell's Valley. Finally ended the night with a Amp run.
While there might not be a lot of obvious same-level groups, you can still get group content done and meet really awesome lvl 80 players is you just reach out and talk to other people.
How is the population lately? Some guilds I know have left for the RIFT train (who knows how long that will last before all must move on in the great migration of the nomad non-WoW guilds), but I've been aching for some of Hyboria lately. Are the servers just ghost-towns now, or are things still pretty lively? How about PvE experience, as far as dungeons, quests, exploration, etc.? I previously only got to lvl 30 or so before I ran out of time to play, but I love Robert Howard's short stories of Conan and am looking to get back into this cool world.
Is the game dead/dying?
What about the rumors of going Free-to-Play? (I know there is already the unlimited trial).
Currently playing: LOTRO, Guild Wars 2.
Have played: EVE Online; Champions Online; Age of Conan; City of Heroes/Villains; Star Wars Galaxies (pre-CU, pre-NGE); World of Warcraft (Vanilla to Cataclysm); Hellgate: London; Warhammer Online; Lord of the Rings Online; Vanguard: Saga of Heroes; Star Wars: The Old Republic
Wishlist: Mass Effect Online
1-20 is nice.
I considered everything else pretty abysmal though.
When did you play? Is this a recent experience, or one in the past?
My god has horns.... nah, I don't think he is real either.
I have been playing since I returned in April of 2010 so here are the facts. The game has a ton of PvE content. It is now 2011 and the game does not lack content for a new player. There is no missing content for leveling. That was fixed ages ago.
Leveling from 1-80 is a breeze and quite fun for PvE. Yes, it takes time just like "ANY" MMO, so use XP potions. You can also ask in global chat for advice. Don't listen to the trolls. Most people who have anything crappy to say about this MMO are either burned out, PvP- who have valid points, or are pretty negative and have personal crap to work out. Its a game and is a ton of fun. I suggest wicanna for a PvE server. The game is mainly PvE focused. PvP players are getting a new server.
There are a couple of things about AoC that make it a fun game to play. First is the Conan IP and how well it has been translated into a video game. MMO or otherwise this is the best Conan game to be had. Then there is the quality production values the game offers. Music, motion quality of all characters, lighting, graphics, art; all is done at a level that rivals any MMO out atm.
As far as gameplay, it is standard quest and story driven MMO fare. There are a lot of quests that are fun and challenging and others that are regular gathering and fetch quests. The biggest draw for me playing PvE is the combat. Going out on quests while you carve up your enemies with a blade or an ax never gets old! Most of these enemies are human, not some weird concoction lifted from fantasy. There is a lot of blood, decapitations, limb severing, all in a world who's art style is way more realistic than cartoon. It is a very unique experience heading out to the world of Hyboria dealing out such visceral damage! No other game out there offers it quite like AoC.
As far as the post Tortage 20-80 game, it holds up just fine. The game's quality is mantained through out except for the voice overs from the quest givers, which are still done but only occasionally. All this talk about how the game quality hits the skids after Tortage is total BS. All the later zones are kept up to the same standard of detail graphics wise, beauty, art, music.
Peeps that insist once you have seen Tortage you have seen the only good part of the PvE game are off the mark. If you like Tortage the rest of PvE all the way to 80 is wonderful as well. Plenty of content, lots of beautiful areas of Hyboria yet to discover.
