I've tried every MMO under the sun, however since 2004 there hasn't been a single good MMO. There has just been this shift towards casuals and how they want everything right away, so everything has been dumbed down. Now you have no death penalty, you can take on 10 mobs at once, there is no travel time, no crafting and PVP is all done in instances. Every MMO out now and coming out just feels like WoW, I have to say I'm pretty bored of that, just like I'm bored of COD and it's clones. It's not just the genre but games in general seem to be moving to the casual console audience, the day an MMO becomes popular on a console is the day the genre truely has no hope.
My last one was SWG but SOE ruined that like all their games and everything since has been a poor WoW clone. I was excited for Middle Earth Online, then they frigging changed the name and it turned into WoW lol. Vanguard, Age of Conan and Warhammer online were big lies and the latest FF14 and DC Universe just flopped hard.
Yet all I want is SWG Pre CU but on a new engine so the potential is back for a great future. I imagined that game to having such a great future of a living breathing Star Wars universe that I could call home and like in a virtual world. Yet now all we're getting is another theme park WoW clone in SWTOR.
Humph.

It really depends on people's tastes, I guess. What's good for one, may not be good for another. Personally, I like easy/normal difficulty PvE (though there are hardcore stuff for the best things), but I'm after great PvP. That's my main reason why I like my current game (Aika). The PvE is Ok, but the PvP is where it shines.
Still, if you don't like one game, keep moving until you find something you like.

Well that's a lot of turth right there. Any game that decides to go off of the WOW Yellow brick road is incapapble of creting something that is playable. AAA MMO's now think that 12 million subscribers is supposed to be success, when it just means that you have made a mediocre game that appeals to everyone and pleases almost no one.
Quasi what is your thumbnail of?
I find it interesting how you always mention Aika on like everyone of your posts.
Beats the people mentioning how they hate WoW on like every post.
( not directed at anyone, just a general observation. It's nice to see people supporting the games they do like instead of bashing the ones they don't. )
We are the bunny.
Resistance is futile.

Travel time, open world PvP and good crafting? Were any of those one-day wonders you tried Fallen Earth, Darkfall, Xyson or any of the other hybrid/sandboxes that came out recently?
I'm just curious, if you don't like themeparks, why try them at all? You're just setting yourself up for frustration, right there.
And if there's something missing/lacking in the sandboxes and hybrids floating around, then what is it?
Please refrain from attacking one another in your posts.
Venekor, my friend, you are just one of many who are frustrated with the current MMORPG approach by big publishers. We've been complaining for years but no one is listening. Not that the theme park games are doing any good, most of them disappoint investors and some even get shut down pretty quick or turned into Free to Play.
I wonder how many failures would it take for them to realize that this game design model is not cutting it anymore. We're not even asking for a lot of innovation as much as at least go back to the root of the genre, bring back the features you missed. We don't want a more complex MMORPG heck as complex as those that were released prior to 2003 would be good enough.
Many of us share your feelings toward the recent games but we can do nothing about it except expressing our frustration on the net.
Err, Vanguard is no WoW clone. Its an EQ clone. And yes, WoW is an EQ clone, so there are certainly parallels to Vanguard. If you expected Vanguard to be anything else than that, I'm sorry. I deeply enjoyed Vanguard and only left because the game was damn empty.
Just like I mention Vanguard in all my posts .. ok, at least many of them.
Haha, I totally missed that one.
Yes, SWG was a sandbox at release. NGE turned into more of a themepark.
So if the OP enjoys sandbox games, he maybe shouldnt try only all these themepark MMOs like LotRO, Vanguard and Warhammer ?
Stuff like EVE might be more enjoyable to him.
OP, I know where you are coming from and do sympathise with your dilema. I have wandered from MMO to MMO but lasted no more than a few months on each and after many months later I repeat the cycle replaying those MMO's again for a few months at a time.
I doubt I will ever play another MMO like SWG and enjoy it as much ever again which is a pity but with that realisation I have put all my hopes into SWTOR as my next permament MMO home. I know it is not anything like SWG which I have accepted but it is Star Wars and a lot of my old SWG friends will be playing it and as long as it is fun I will be happy.
I have tried the SWG *cough*emu*cough* but it isn't complete and doesn't feel the same so I guess it will be left alone. I just wished it was completed sooner but with the problems they had I can't say I am surprised. At least they tried and kudos to them.
QFT! Bring on the love :P
Mission in life: Vanquish all MMORPG.com trolls - especially TESO, WOW and GW2 trolls.
Prepare to be disappointed, then.
For Star Wars: The Old Republic (SWTOR) is NOT AT ALL like Star Wars Galaxies (SWG) !!!
SWTOR is a typical themepark MMO with a very strong focus to story, and a realm vs realm setting (Jedi/Republic vs Sith/Empire) with side specific classes (much like DAoC, but with only 2 realms).
Specifically there are 8 starter classes, 4 per side, each coming with about 200 hours of story content.
These 4 starter classes per side split very early into 2 advanced classes each. Even these advanced classes are still very fuzzy, because they get 3 skilltrees (one is shared with the sibling advanced class) and depending upon into which skilltree you put your focus, your abilities will be drastically different.
Specifically 3 of the 8 advanced classes per side will get a skilltree that allows to turn into a full healer, and 3 other classes will get a skilltree that allows to turn into a full tank. The remaining 2 classes will only have support/damage dealer options, though.
Noteworthy is also the very minimalistic group size of only 4 people. So yeah, you'll need 25% tanks, 25% healers and 50% damage dealers in the game, or there will be problems.
So yeah, theres a good chance that, if you didnt even liked Vanguard, you wont like SWTOR either. Its probably just as much a "WoW clone" as Vanguard is one.
I call BS on your "tried every MMO under the sun" statement.
Putting Vanguard alongside lotro/wow/aoc just show that you don't know what you are talking about.
Oh, and what was the big lie with Vanguard?
Remember you only played it for one day so your knowledge should really be zero. Don't tell me something you heard tell me your one day experience that made you come to the conclusion that Vanguard was a lie.
I don't mean to exclude you from a large amount of people who say this. It is my personal opinion that this type of thinking is an excuse for why current games are sub par. You also suggest he try games until he finds one. What he's getting at bro, is their are NONE!!! Heres the deal in my head, an mmorpg is a living computerized art piece that allows users to interact within and contribute to it. What our genre suffers is it's massive financial backing needed, artists are puppeted by corperate motives. Our testamant and proof are the NGE's from SWG. Corporations have trouble understanding the genre itself and the condition of the subscribers. For God sakes they don't even know how violent, changeing the core mechanics of a mmorpg can be. In summary, game blue prints should be created souly from the inside. Not for one second considering what would appease an audience. But itself stand alone as it's own genuine world of fantasy. To which we the users, enter through the "wardrobe" of our computer. Could anyone here resist walking in their closet if some mangifacent world of fantasy awaited on the other side. A good mmorpg would fullfill this role, but its just not happening and theirs no denying it. I don't intend to be some guy on the side lines either, I'm so upset with this I'm going to become a game designer. Funny way to pick a career, but it's what I'm going to do.
By the way I was one of those kids that allways got the next gen system after it starts makeing appearances at the good will. I had such an appetite for MMORPG's I bought DAOC and just read the manual. Wishing I had a computer with sub. I love MMORPG's but where doing worse than the world economy right now. Well if you don't measure our success by the monopoly WOW. Dude theirs more room in the world for mmo's.
He called SWTOR a WoW clone. Them's fightin' words!
Have you tried taking a look at ArcheAge? It isn't out yet but it certainly seems like it offers a lot in terms of player freedom and it looks absolutely fantastic too. As an old SWG veteran myself I would recommend taking a look.
